SAINT FRANCIS COLLEGE 180 REMSEN STREET BROOKLYN, NEW YORK 11201 1981 COUNTDOWN A 2 3 Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise, whose five year mission is to seek out new life, new civilizations, and to boldly go where no man has gone before . . . Challenging, exciting, daring, words of emotion yet not enou gh to express the feeling of adventure one feels when hearing this short but familiar prologue. In Dedication to the class of 81 the Franciscan staff will also embark on a mission. Its purpose, simply, is to present a feeling of accomplishment of what has been done yet to remind of the challenge that still awaits those graduating. In the vastness of our “own universes” we will encounter fears, hopes, sorrows, and joys, in moving toward the goals we’ve set and those yet to be set. We the members of the “Starship Francis¬ can” wish the class of 81 much continued success on their journey. For they are the future they are the ones who must dare to explore, to question, to listen. Live long and prosper. Best Wishes Franciscan 1981 -4 V • ■ v‘. :• ' • ' V ’ ! v ’ . • .• . Sometimes it is all we can do but keep up with our existing situations. But yet we still reach to the future. Its mystery intrigues us. We wonder what it has in store for each one of us. But whatever it may have one thing is for sure each one of us would like to control it, to shape it according to our own goals and dreams. This of course is easier said than done . . . but it is not totally impossible. We here at S.F.C. are all aiming (reaching towards our stars) in hopes that some day we will triumph above all the obstacles we will encounter. This steering of our personal futures is a worthwhile ideal but one must keep in mind the strivings of others. Too many times people have not only climbed over mountains but over each other as well in trying to achieve their ultimate goals. Instead, we shou ld try to assist one another to achieve goals not only beneficial to ourselves but to those on a larger scale as well. As we pass through the years here at St. Francis, not only has a search for the answers to our many questions been sought but hopefully during this searching a spirit has grown. A spirit which creates a common bond between those that we have shared these years with. It is easy, upon reaching this stage in life, to be afraid or unsure of what may lie before us. But possibly one can face this with a desire for challenge. It will be difficult to remain simple in a world filled with such complexity. All we can do is try. We must not only look forward to what is to be our future but we must remember what work and sacrifices we made in our past in order to make it the bes t it could possibly be. For we valued the receiving of an education and now that the years here have come to a close what it is we learned must be treasured and not forgotten while still pushing to know more. For it is exactly this holding on to what has past yet searching for what is to come that makes our todays so special. P. MIKE EVANS 168 169 170 171 172 VOYAGE TO THE MOON Of that world, having returned from it, I may say There is no romance there, no air being present To carry the sound of compliment. The inhabitants Cannot smell one another, even when the sun At long midday heats them beyond our temperature. It is therefore a nation of pure philosophy Without sin or absolution. The swift works Of their brains show through their crystal faces With absolute consonance. The pattern of their thoughts Is like that of pleases clocks agreeing on an hour. They are advanced in mathematics. The closest thing To affection I could observe among them was The appreciation of a theorem shared by two Investigators. The emotion was expressed By a format, rapid exchanging of prime numbers. The air of earth would surely be fatal to them, Our sounds shatter, our perfumes corrode them. But What would bring them, I think, most entirely to a stop Would be to watch our explosions of hate and love Which may serve as armament for the next expedition. WILLIAM DICKEY Joe This One’s For You 174 178 SPACE MAN Jetted like the circus’s Human bullet, hell face A public privacy For the space of his throttled jaunt. Returning, Will he be implacably displaced, Haunted by earthlessness? Cecilia Mercado REACH FOR THE STARS FRANCISCAN 1981 Paul and Joe; 1981 Editors Franciscan Yearbook 222 Dear Friends, How does one end a year’s work of joy, devotion, love and even pain? It is not an easy task by any means. Maybe it’s an old cliche but it still fits, “All good things must come to an end.” We can only hope the book was as good for you as the experience of producing it was for us. As with most books which are produced, yearbooks being no exception, they cannot be produced by the two editors alone. Therefore, the warmest and sincerest thanks are extended to those who helped whenever they could: Joli Yuknek, Vinny Pisani, Lorraine DeLandro, Anthony Imbruglia, Liliana Arias, Barbara Ann Banninger, Maria Bennici and Ed Thornton of Thornton’s Classic Studios. We would also like to thank the one girl who was always there learning, helping but mostly giving. As if the performance of menial tasks was not enough, this girl was here with an ear to ear smile and a great sense of humor which helped pick us up when our own craziness was not enough. So we would like to say to Donna, “We love vou. Thanks.” Lastly, we would like to say that although it is thought unusual and hard to do, we think we showed that two people, two distinct personalities can produce a yearbook while occupying the position of Editor-in-Chief simulta¬ neously. On that note we would like to thank and congratulate each other on finishing, what in our opinion, was the most challenging and enriching job we have faced thus far. Very truly yours, Joe Paul Editors Franciscan 1981 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Our sincere thanks to those listed for their contribution to the production of this publication: “Copyright e 1972 Dick James Music Limited, Used by Permmission. McDougal, Littell Company, Evanston, Illinois (for poems used on pgs 167, 173, 179, 185 and 191) New York Planetarium for space pictures supplied And to all the others, expecially Andrew Murro and Josten’s American Yearbook Company, who helped make this book a reality.
