His topic was Growing Control over Birth, Life, and Death” dealing with the increasing power that doctors now have, and the use of that power. Dr. Hilton looked upon the subject from an ethical point of view, bringing up the questions of how far do we go, in the relation to the sustenance of human life. Doctors today are dealing with situations that they have never encountered before; they are gaining more power over the control of life and death. Dr. Hilton contends that doctors are progressing beyond their means, that physicians are made to assume roles, to give advice far beyond their competence, and knowledge beyond their medical backgrounds. During the lecture, which lasted two hours, Dr. Hilton touched upon many topics, including the right not to life . He brought up the fact that with technology today, doctors are now able to tell if the unborn fetus will have genetic disease, if it will be retarded, bringing up the question of the decision to terminate the pregnancy. Dr. Hilton was received with much enthusiasm and thanked the audience referring to them as a very stimulating group . i l’r. Monaghan. Mr. Cyril Cusack and daughter Sorcha 79 On Monday, Nov. 22, Si. Francis College hosted two distinguished visitors. Mr. Cyril Cusack and his daughter — “colleague” Sorcha, internationally renowned actors from Dublin’s world-famous Abbey Theatre, spoke to a capacity audience in Room 706A. The Cusacks, who are presently performing before sell-out crowds at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, talked briefly about the late Irish playwright Sean O’Casey. For the remainder of the hour, the father and daughter answered questions about theater from the audience. Many questions asked by members of the audience were difficult and needed replies too involved to be answered in so short a time. By answering these questions with a surprising openess, the Cusacks revealed their concerns and knowledge of Irish Theatre and theater in General. In summation then, it may be said that an enjoyable, thought provoking afternoon was had by all present. m Patty Moffat. Borcl (Ref. 5). He conjectured a special case of the so-called Fundamental Theorem, but was held up by his failure to prove it. In 1928, John von Neumann gave a talk to the Mathematical Society in Gottingen (Ref. 22) and gave a proof of that theorem. Very little was, however, heard of the theory until 1944, when the monumental work by J. von Neumann and O. Morgcnstcm (Ref. 24) appeared. The mathematical contents of this book included some further developments, while the second-named author’s reputation as a leading economist gave a clue to a particular application for the theory. It was soon noticed - which is not surprising -that a theory of competitive games could throw some light not only on features of relatively peaceful economic competition, but also on those of combat and warfare. From then on, practical and theoretical aspects were developed side by side, and by now the theory of games has given rise to an extended activity which comprises research even in such abstract subjects as set theory, and topology. Programs such as this Memorial Scholarship present the opportunity to single out those seniors having distinguished themselves in their college careers. The program was initiated during the spring following John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963. Originally a concept which limited the number of scholarships awarded to one per school year, the program has since been expanded to designate three students as award winners. 223 The 1977 Yearbook is now completed and in your hands. To my fellow classmates, Faculty and staff, enjoy this book, as much as I enjoyed working on it. This is your book and it is a year of your life. For those of you who arc now taking that big step into the outside world, the staff of the Franciscan wishes you the best of luck, a happy healthy life and a successful future. I also would like to take this time to thank those who have, through their ability, kindness and devotion have made this book what it is. My special thanks to Dean John Clifford, George Ruebens and Larry Van Pelt for their assistance and patience. Yours truly, John McDonald Editor-in-Chief
