Text from Pages 1 - 228 of the 1975 volume:

Well, here it is! Are you excited? Bet you can’t wait to just take those grubby little fingers of yours and just tear through all these pages. Yes, yes, it probably is the main event of the year, well, at least one of the most anticipated. Of course, everyone wants to search through it. There is always the possibility that perhaps this year, this book, which you now hold in your very own little hands, hides somewhere in its pages a candid shot of you! Times of un¬ necessary anxiety and unfulfilled an¬ ticipation are forgotten. With only 224 pages to scrutinize you hold your hopes high once again; this time things will be different. As you embark upon this annual voyage, consider the awaited moment: that is your face you’r looking at, right? Certainly, the nam is right there to identify you. After al is there anyone in St. Francis College who could stake claim to that un mistakable Adonis profile? Ye who is it in that photograph? Coul that be the same person who sit looking at it now? Of course not. Tha was you — the“wet look”;now, frown ing in disapproval is you — the “dr look”. A change has occurred; that i: for sure. What is not at all certain ii exactly what has happened. Then may be a tendency to fall back 01 some overused jargon. ‘‘I guess I jus grew up”, you think to yourself. As i the words “grew up” held som magic meaning. Grew up?! Wha kind of growing up? Cutting classes 2 Playing ball. Tennis. Soccer. Volleyball. Yoga. Swimming. Reading. Testing. Cramming. Testing. Cramming. Cramming. Fail¬ ing. Passing (barely). D.D.D.B.C.B.A.B.D.D.F. Worrying. Working. Meeting. Writing. Working. Working. Experimenting. Working. Working. Playing cards. Jukeboxes. Kicking soda machines. Cigarette machines. Ice cream machines. Drinking coffee. Cokes. Wine, Beer, Dancing. Mixing it up. Dancing. Dan¬ cing. Dancing. O, Lord, how you could dance!!! Why you grew up dancing. Danc¬ ed right into St. Francis College, truly excited at the prospects of having all of New York City as your campus. Now here you are, sadder but wiser, realizing that a S.F.C. I.D. card won’t allow you free entry into the Empire State Building. Moreover, you know that your “campus”, (while it is heated during the winter) is referred to in other circles as a “sidewalk”. What happened? You think to yourself, “I was a re-run! A re-run! Not one novel moment! Bowing out like a 1936 movie on the ‘Late, Late Show’.” It all has happened before. Even the previous sentence. Grow¬ ing up has happened before. Alter¬ natives boggle your mind. I could have done this. I could have done something else. I should have said this or that. If only I had chosen differently . . . Some folks say not to second guess. You are tied to the choices you’ve made. You realize 3 4 5 this is what you are, but nonetheless you ponder the choices. The mature ones. The immature ones. What becomes clear is that what you could have said and what you could have done become the measure of what you are. But what are you? A man? A woman? “Whoa there!” you think. Those words imply all sorts of things you haven’t begun to do. Settling down. Crystallizing. Buying houses. Growing roots. One thing you do know. Whatever development that has occurred has been skyward. Not earthward . . . There you are ... up in the air. . . living . . . loving . . . having a ball. People kept asking what are you going to do? Going to do? As if “doing” were some far away thing. One wonders if the general public is aware of the fact that you wake up every morning . . . and pull over your dress . . . put on your pants . . . climb into your shoes . . . wondering where the insulation that you’re supposed to possess is . . . Somehow you don’t feel insulated . . . grounded. No you’re alive . . . wire . . . high . . . making connec¬ tions . . . but at the same time out in the open. Being rained on. Showered on. Frozen out. Billed. Billed. Billed! Paying everyday for your “insulation”. It would be worth the worry if you could do what you wanted to do . . .be an actor. God knows an actor pays bills too . . . but an actor is a Real Person . . .not just being focused and edited but focusing and editing. Not just un¬ dergoing but acting. Yessir, that’s what you want to be ... an actor. 6 7 8 9 10 11 ■‘ v 12 Once, a young man, wishing to leave home at an early age, per¬ suaded his father to give him his in¬ heritance. He took the inheritance, left his father’s house, and proceed¬ ed to squander the money. Broke, he realized that he had not succeeded in his quest for independence. A couple of days in poorer quarters brought him to this realization. He returned home — a lot wiser I guess . . . even if all that he learned was that you can’t gain wisdom tomorrow . . . It takes time . . . and ex¬ perience. Apparently, developing or growth is not something you can force or hurry. One imagines that if you have a capacity for wisdom it ' s nice to have the patience to wait on yourself until you grow in experience and then grown up, step into that new suit of clothes called wisdom. 13 14 15 Ahh yes! Those words again. Ex¬ perience. The proverbial rainbow! Wisdom. The pot of gold at the rain¬ bow’s end! Usually reserved for the end of the school year, these words make one wonder about his own liv¬ ing habits. “Indeed, what will become of me” you think to yourself. “Is my experience a fruitful one? Will I be wise? Or at least get along?” The desire to live within the framework of profitable experience is one shared by all of us. We need not worry too much about the place that these years will hold for us in the future. Undoubtedly, these are significant times. A British author, R. J. Johnston once wrote of a man whom he called Smith and who he met when he, Johnston was middle- aged. He wrote the following of this man: “Even if I never saw Smith again, I could never forget him — for I could never tell the story of myself without speaking of him . . .When I met him I was a fully grown man — never suspecting that any real changes would occur in my life. But after I came to know him I realized life for me would never be the same again.” One can assume safely that St. Francis College will bear that same relationship to one’s life that Smith did to Johnston’s life. At least in the sense that it affected in one way or another your outlook on things out¬ side. Moreover, the contact that one makes — the human contact, can be very much like the contact spoken of in the passage above. The unforget¬ table people. Teachers. Students. Office workers. Cafeteria workers. Laughing. Crying. Living. Loving. Making Hay. In a million years you couldn’t run into a group of people like these. What’s more, you find yourself talking about them or to them. Being for them. And you realize that in the future in thinking about 1974 — 1975, you will remember these people. You will have to if you are to accurately show who you are or who you were. The growth is not simply a matter of appearance; it’s real. 16 17 ADMINISTRATION FACULTY STAFF A college is comprised of a variety of elements; there are its president and his administrators, the secretaries, a faculty, students and of course, there is the building where all these groups come together. The building holds within it an office for each administrator, a desk and typewriter for each secretary, but for faculty and students there is a uni¬ que arrangement. Faculty and students share classrooms. Within the classroom the faculty member is assigned the desk at the front of the room while the students are seated in front of this desk. A faculty member face-to-face with students; here is where the important difference between school and education lies. It is the transference occurring between student and teacher that distinguishes this building from other buildings. Without the presence of faculty and students and their daily engagement in the pursuit of knowledge, this building would not be unlike an of¬ fice building. While all of the elements mentioned are necessary for the establishment of a college, it seems to be somewhat obvious that without its faculty and students there would be no need for its maintenance. The relationship shared by faculty and students is one which has come down through history. While the circumstances un- derwhich this relationship functions have changed the need for teachers by students has remained throughout time. Socrates: Since, then, not only by knowledge would men be good and useful to their cities (if they were so) but also by right opinion, and since neither knowledge nor true opinion comes to mankind by nature, being acquired — or do you think that either of them does come by nature, perhaps? Menon: No, not I. Socrates: Therefore they come not by nature, neither could the good be so by nature. Menon: Not at all. Socrates: Since not by nature, we inquired next whether it could be taught. Menon: Yes. Socrates: And if it could be taught, it would be wisdom. Menon: Certainly. Socrates: And if there were teachers, it could be taught, if no teachers, it could not? Menon: Just so. Socrates: Further, we agreed that there were no teachers of it? Menon: That is true. Socrates: We agreed, then, that it could not be taught, and that it was not wisdom? Menon: Certainly. Socrates: But, however, we agree that it is good? Menon: Yes. Socrates: And that which guides rightly is useful and good? Menon: Certainly. Socrates: Again, only these two things guide rightly, right opinion and knowledge; and if a man has these, he guides rightly — for things which happen rightly from some chance do not come about by human guidance: but in all things in which a man is a guide towards what is right, these two do it, true opinion and knowledge. —THE MENO Plato Bro. This process cannot be restricted to any one time or place in a person’s life; it is forever con¬ tinuing. However, not only does it (education) hold toget her as a uni¬ que experiential subset but as such it obtains a greater status in and over our total experience. It stands in a congiguous relation to the latter. All of its aspects: interaction with other people, introduction to new ideas, searching for the unending number of ways to bring to light all of those hidden talents you’ve been har¬ boring for so long; all are part of the process, all are contributing factors, there’s no way you can prevent it and there’s no way you can escape it. . . Along with the pleasures of profitable experience come much pain and difficulty. While its rewards are the attainment of self satisfaction and achievement of potential, it is also the introduction to our limitations through our failings and shortcomings. This awareness gives us a new perspective; it is an indica¬ tion of our need to continue to work, and a reminder of the limitless character of knowledge. It is a perspective that awakens in us a deeper perseverance, which allows us to work on those limitless bounds without despairing. The kinds of activities we find in¬ teresting, challenging and worth our while, the number of clubs we find time to participate in and the sorts of events we plan on attending are all part of the process. Remember going to the first meeting trying to decide which ones were worthy of your time, efforts and membership? And which activities would be exciting, new and just a lot of fun? Remember trying to figure out how you were going to go to class, go to meetings, go to work, eat, study and sleep all in a mere 24 hours. It definitely was a tight schedule, but certainly worth it. OR WAS IT? Getting into school by 7:00 A.M. in order to practice diving before that 9:00 A.M. class, staying until 2:00 A.M. after a full day of classes and working part time to get that newspaper out and staying after the party in order to clean up after all the singing and dancing has ended. Not taking that Tuesday night class so you could be in Founders Hall for the senate meetings . . . . All those “Wednesday, 2:00 P.M.” meetings when you could have gone home and slept... all those nights of practicing and the traveling back and forth from games — always the night before a big exam ... all the hours spent with a camera slung around your throat, looking impor¬ tant — and then having to develop the 6 rolls of film you shot . . . decorating the tree, cleaning up the frat house, trying to meet the rent . . . all the LATE night rehearsals — trying to be serious, trying to get a group that would draw a crowd . . . “Buy a chance?” running beer blasts . . . finding contestants to team up against a BEAR?! . . . getting someone who can sing and play the guitar at the same time . . . trying to get people to keep their clothes on . . . trying to keep all the beer cold, getting money refunds from the game room, hoping for a sell-out on opening night, hoping the nurse is in to tape up your knee, hosting the math bowl, meeting your deadline . . . having it all end. All were part of the process; all were contributing factors, there’s no way you could prevent it — no way you could es¬ cape it!!! It all made you grow. He has never made a shaving commer¬ cial, because his face couldn’t sell a sleeping pill to an insomniac. The mention of his name during the broadcast of a game is usually followed by a comment like, “A real hustler” or, “A guy who always gives 100 percent”, which translates as “He doesn’t know his left foot from his right, and it shows.” He has the grace and poise of a bowling ball rolling through mud. But Gary Doak plays ice hockey, none the less, and he plays on the same team with the greatest player ever to lace a pair of skates; Bobby Orr. The boring practices, the nervous stomachs, the lost games and the cold showers were all there. Were they worth it? What kept us coming back to vacant seats and empty stands? What possessed us to run around in our short pants and take kicks in the shins, elbows in the ribs, sticks in the stomachs and water on the knees? What made us beat our bodies to asphixiated pulps? Could it be the intoxicating reality of being young, the celebration of having a body that does what it’s told when it’s told that produces such insanity? There are more Gary Doaks in the world than there are Bobby Orrs. That is a fact. But it is a fact that does not detract from the worth of the Gary Doaks we have associated with on the teams here at St. Francis, and it is a fact that it has added to the ap¬ preciation of the Bobby Orrs who have walked among us. But, when all is said and done, very few of us ex¬ pected to go on and become the Bobby Orrs of our respective sports. What, then, has been the point of our athletic stay here at St. Francis? I am sure that the camaraderie we ex¬ perienced will always reinforce our belief that our participation in sports at St. Francis was worth the time and effort. Sure, the people we teamed with weren’t the greatest athletes in the world, but all the shots that were missed, all the passes that never clicked, all the baskets that never swished, all the bases that were never stolen will never replace in our minds the frivolity of the locker rooms, the beers, the frat parties, the streaking or the friendly card games in the cafeteria. Good people, great people, people who had a good time playing on the same team and shar¬ ing the same experiences, good and bad. As the years pile up behind us, when flipping through these pages, we should be able to laugh and remember when. Remember the people who were there, because they were the factors that, when the opposition was out scoring us five to one, made it one of the best times of our lives. It is probably these memories that at age 55, when we can barely see the T.V. screen over our bellies and beer cans, when our legs have been infested with vericose veins and become the size of tree stumps, when we discover a new pain every day, when our bodies no longer go where we want them to and take a week to recuperate when they finally do, will bring a smile to our faces, a shake to our heads, and a tear to our eyes. Graduation is upon us, and your security blanket is about to be snatched away! You are about to hear your first discouraging words: The world is NOT waiting for you. Your first mistake was having had your diploma printed on paper and not liverwurst. While the sheepskin does, undeniably, give a better appearance, when you consider it, liverwurst would have been so much more practical. In case you haven’t noticed people are starving out there in the real world! Unlike the cries of the new born babe, the shock of your entrance into the world of the work¬ ing people may not be so easily con¬ soled. So, in order that you may avoid any further misfortunes here are some tips you may find worth your consideration. First, be certain to request all your graduation gifts in the form of edibles (i.e., canned goods, frozen foods, dried meats, etc.) or food stamps. Secondly, (for those who don’t find it a physical impossibility) prac¬ tice your typing and a friendly telephone voice. It may also be to your advantage to know the alphabet backwards, forwards and the cor¬ responding numbers for each letter. Thirdly, in determining what positions you will apply for, bear in mind one thing, PLASTICS”. Fourth, when on your way to an in¬ terview one of the best ways to con¬ vince yourself that you are THE per¬ son for the position, is to repeat over and over to yourself, “4 X $1,000, at m% interest...” Finally, when you have secured a means of employment remember this old Chinese proverb: Never trust a pickpocket with your wallet (while everyone is entitled to making a liv¬ ing there’s a limit to all things!). These steps should be committed to memory and recited just before the taking of your daily dose of mallox. This is your insurance for truth, justice and the key to heaven — and if nothing else, something to ponder upon while on the unemploy¬ ment line.
