Brother Donald Sullivan, O.S.F. President of Saint Francis College 2 Table of Contents SFC Retrospect 4- 15 Graduating Seniors 17- 68 Senior Directory 69- 73 Activities 74-127 161-174 Sports 129-160 Frank’s Franks 175-208 Index 222 3 The time you got an “F” in some course, and it was all the teacher’s fault. ... You know ... he only came to class three times all semester give tests. ... Or ... the time you helped a friend for a math test and he got an “A” and you failed. Remember the student government that tried its dadblasted best ... but ... Remember how you were? ... Going home right after classes ... maybe staying once in awhile to sit around and talk or to play cards ... 6 And then there were the good times ... All that lethargy ... just made room for a whole lot of hope ... so when the college began accepting women you knew it had to be better ... Better for the women ... .. . better for the men. Remember when you were the only guy in Modern Dance II, or the only girl in Lifetime Sports .. . and then they went and segregated classes. .. . Remember how you thought it would be better to change your major from chemistry to physical education ... you thought to yourself, “Hey, This is better”. - i 9 Remember the school newspaper that came out four times a year ... It got better ... it came out four weeks in a row, then ran out of money ... Remember when you put your possessions in jeopardy by coming to school ... 10 ... and no one volume could ever express all experiences you had ... like the time went into an unlabeled bathroom, and turning into what you thought was a stall, you found instead a line of urinals ... and on your way out you bumped into the guy who sits next to you in Writing About Literature II ... Of course, you fought it every inch ... “responsible” never described you ... There was not a course you took where you studied for a test in advance ... you were the best “night before” studier on earth ... and you have a 2.19 index to prove it ... your faith in the “gentleman ‘C’ ” was never shaken and consequently your transcript looks like an exercise in finding the letter “C” on an IBM typewriter. ... but you’re making it or you’ve made it. No matter though .. . because SFC has got you or has had you ... and you’ve had SFC ... and it’ll never let you go and you’ll never let it go ... l? Even if you never return, how could you forget the teacher who was always ten minutes late because he could never find the classroom ... everytime you tell a story about these years whether you just finished them or you’re in the midst of them you’ll think about SFC. ... the courses they listed and cancelled during registration ... how about the time you were closed out of a course you needed for your major. Thomas McGwynn Assistant Registrar 13 ... and you felt like you were gambling with your life ... and the time it took you an hour and a half to get to the front of the registration line and they informed you that you were on the wrong one ... “the wrong one” you thought ... “they’re right, I’m on the wrong line in the wrong place.” ... and you recalled how you had thought about transferring after your freshman year ... but just now you find yourself registering ... this time for the last time . .. it’s only the beginning ... the commencement — as the cliche’ goes ... Yes ... it really is funny how you remember the bad things . .. The good and the bad. ... and the good things ... SFC had to be funny ... if the whole thing was serious ... it was also insanity and so go on ... read on ... friend ... you have a beautiful sense of humor ... 15 Mario J. Under the leadership of Joe Nunziata, succeeded as president in January by Bill Randazzo, the chapter continues fostering it’s ideals of scholastic achievement and the promotion of Italian culture by continuing the library exhibit. This past October, Beta Sigma held it’s annual Cancer Drive at the college. In Beta Sigma chapter, there are five brothers who are members of the Dun Scotus Honor Society. Three senior class officers and one of the executive members of Student Government are members of Beta Sigma. Many of the brothers participate in the various clubs, functions at the college, and teams. Nine were awarded Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. On March 25. 1972, Beta Sigma chapter celebrated it’s tenth anniversary at a dinner in Flushing. Queens. Beta Sigma chapter is also an active participant in the national affairs of the fraternity. Alpha Phi Delta has helped Saint Francis to grow and will continue to do so in the future. Amid all the bowls, games and tournaments that permeate any particular year in the sports world, we must remind ourselves that there is more to life; more to think about; and more to look forward to than Super Bowl or the World Series. I suppose that the jock mentality is a tough one to shake but it isn't impossible. There must be something wrong with spending 18 (not including pre-season) Sundays in a row, in front of a television set, watching grown men pound each other on the head. If they did it on the street they'd be arrested. It is important to remember that sports and games are only a part of our lives. It seems to me that the older we become the smaller the part that these games play should become. As we grow older other responsibilities force us to give up many of our athletic endeavors. If football games begin to take precedence over family, friends, jobs or studies, we should look at ourselves and ask about our priorities. What is important to me? A lot of people say that sports are a means ol escape. That’s true, but in too many instances we escape to the sports world and forget to come back. Things will always go well if we don't venture past the last few pages of the Daily Seus. All we would have to worry about would be whether or not a particular player's tom ligaments had healed well enough for him to play at peak efficiency. If our team doesn't make out too well, there is always next year. It may sound far fetched but I'd bet that for many people it is truer than they'd like to admit. I'm not saying that sports and games should not be part of our lives. I am only questioning the size and importance of that part. I enjoy participating in and watching various sports, but I try to remember that when you come right down to it they are just not the most important things. Chronicled here on the following pages are some of those fleeting moments in a single year of sports at St. Francis College, frozen for all time the youth and spirit that only comes once in our lives. Play ball!! — Arthur Raimo, Sports Editor THE VOICE 129 Ice Hockey Though the St. Francis Icemen did not draw the crowds that some of the other teams managed during the season they were not the less undaunted. They did not turn in their best season this year. The President of our club hockey team, Nicholas D’Onghia summarized this years team as young and largely inexperienced, but good team players eager to learn. Though the team did not win as many games as expected, coupled with the loss of a number of veteran seniors, the outlook for the team is good. This has been a year of building for the team, but with the team spirit, energy and desire exhibited by the newcomers for the organization, it is a sure bet to find St. Francis at the top of the league next year. 130 Lou Scipione Jimmy Cowan applies the pressure. 131 Boom, Boom” Bob Sparno breaks away. The S.F.C. chapter sponsors informal seminars on current topics with notable and interesting guest speakers. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS St. Francis of Assisi Council 6041, is the title of the Knights of Columbus Council on campus here at the college. This group is dedicated to the promotion of it’s aims: charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. The council is very active not only among it’s present on campus members, but also among many of the alumni of St. Francis. Evidence of this is seen in the fact that the present Grand Knight of the council is Bob Smith, a recent graduate of the college. 17 2 KAPPA MU EPSILON fflatlif matuB lionor ori tg Sntn 9bom She r Presents dome. N Y. -11201 College Office of the President June 9, 1973 Deal' Graduate: I wish to congratulate this year's Franciscan for its choice of theme and at the same time express my gratitude for being permitted use of this page to share the following thoughts. I recall that the members of the class of 1973 and I began as freshmen in 1969. Together we have experienced four years which the Yearbook Committee suitably describes as The Good and The Bad . Certainly we have seen many examples of both; we have witnessed problems, solutions, many triumphs, as well as world-wide sadness over a number of catastrophes. One might even lose hope. Yet, as graduation approaches, I remain confident. While aware that certain occupational and economic indices are discouraging, I have great trust that the 1973 graduates are equal to the challenges of the 70's and are in fact, prepared for them. I am also confident that Almighty God will continue to care for St. Francis College and her 1973 graduates as well as all her graduates and undergraduates. Of this I am sure. As President of the College, authorized to speak for all the divisions of our academic family, I offer to every 1973 graduate heartfelt congratulations. Su (Br6.) Donald Sullivan, O.S.F. President 223 - ■1
