It was formed in order to assist those who, after fulfill¬ ing their military commitments, have returned to academic life. The Club’s members encounter the incoming Veterans, orientate them to College routine, and indicate to them the possible benefits of St. Francis College. Concurrently they arrange for a series of lectures in conjunction with the Vet¬ erans Administration informing him of the G.I. Bill’s bene¬ fits. The College activities of the Club include its annual raf¬ fle, with proceeds going to the Veterans Hospital. With Prof. Arthur Hughes as its moderator, the Veterans Club promises to continue to serve the Veterans of St. Francis College. p. leonard; 1. rosenburger; j. carcy; gerald galgan — moderator. 61 psychology club (1 to r) p. o ' keefe; 1. marrotta; bro. g. gilmartin; p. chingos; b. gorman; m. boccabella; e. starr; v. lotocano; j. packcno; b. leone; r. pistilli; b. guarinello; c. semler; t. swarkowski; m. carncy; m. phillips; j. jacob; m. angiolillo; a. golding. The club in its embryonic stage struggled for acceptance into the schools mainstream. Unbeleivable is the only way to describe the result of this struggle. With two years of growth under the club’s belt, they decided to cut their embryonic cord. The club is now involved in the inner city struggle. Methods used in this struggle by the club is tutorial programs, Heritage programs and clothing drives. The club’s objectives can be best described through the poet Langston Hughes, “Besides, one day they’ll see how beauti¬ ful we are, and be ashamed, we too are St. Francis men.” dare to struggle, dare to win. - CHAIRMAN MAO. Letters of introduction were sent to the business division students, advising them of the plans of the club for the year and the advantages which the club holds. Utilizing a two week membership drive, the club was able to establish itself as one of the largest on campus. Under the leadership of President John Can- none, it tried to inculcate an appreciation for the profession both on its members and on the student body as a whole. In accomplishing this-important goal, the Busi¬ ness Club has established a program designed to supplement classroom theory with actual practice, as they occur in the business field today. Each year speakers representing all phases of the profession are invited to express their views on topics of interest. The fraternity’s second year at 118 Court St. has been the scene of many outrageous parties and refined social functions. All the members are active in many of the athletic, academic, and political aspects of the college. In response to the need for recognition by the schools’ Football and Ice Hockey clubs, the fraternity has taken on another function, that of an annual tro¬ phy for Most Valuable Player in each sport. 1. f. morelli 2. j. frawley 3.1. marsiello 4. w. olinzock 5. b. bongierno 6. r. murphy 7. t. cassamissa 8. r. friedmann 9. b. favini 10. p. gilmartin 11. g. farentino 12. t. valenti 13. b. carroll 14. c. tapino 15. j. barclay 16. a. miller 96 Since its founding in May, 1964, the Zeta Iota chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity has distin¬ guished itself at St. Francis College. Alpha Kappa Psi is a professional Business Fraternity with Na¬ tional Headquarters in Indianapolis. Zeta Iota sponsored the first dance at St. Francis in which beer was served in the lounge. It proved to be truly successful. The brothers of Zeta Iota are proud to have as their faculty members, Prof. Ernest Petrocelli and Prof. Dan Walsh. They have also added Bro. Plac¬ id as an honorary member. They have shown a tremendous amount of interest in the Fraternity by attending meetings and social functions. As the new administration of the Chapter takes over, Alpha Kappa Psi will continue to seek the success that has been accomplished in the past years. It was founded in 1923, when the brothers of Kappa Gamma Fraternity of St. Francis College decided to affiliate with Phi Rho Pi, Alpha Chapter of Man¬ hattan College. Throughout its forty-seven year history, fra¬ ternity has stressed the fact that the most wel l rounded individ¬ ual is the one that participates totally. This total participation in the life of the college has always been the goal of Phi Rho Pi. This year the fraternity once again sponsored the annual blood drive, contributing to the school’s blood bank. It also ran the Christmas Toy Drive for the orphans at the Monser- rate Mission in Bklyn. Socially, Phi Rho Pi’s annual pre¬ school blast was a huge success with over 600 guests attending. The achievement of these goals has largely been due to the ef¬ forts of Praetor John Serrao, Dennis Mitchell and John Jazy- lo, with the total involvement of each and every brother. The accomplishment of Phi Rho Pi’s goal-total participa¬ tion in the life of the college — was amply evidenced this past year by the fact that five of her brothers were selected to “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities,” and nine served the students in the realm of Student Government. However, even more basic than this total partcipation, and without which this participation would never be possible, is the fraternity’s overwhelming spirit of brotherhood. This true “fraternalism” has been the binding force of Phi Rho Pi since its inception, and continues to grow increasingly stronger each semester as new brothers are welcomed into the fraternity. It is this feeling of closeness, of brotherhood, that drives the broth¬ ers to work together as a unit, resulting in a total participation in the life of St. Francis College. c. gentile j. pepe t. Among these activities Alpha Phi Delta originated a Library exhibit honoring different Italian figures each month and participated in the annual Columbus Day Parade and other Italian affairs. Scholastically Alpha Phi Delta ranks number one among the fraternities with many of her members making the Dean’s List. Alpha is not only active in the school but has done its share for the community. The brothers have played an integral part in the mailing system of the American Cancer Society, and contributed to the St. Francis Blood Drive in huge force. However, life in Alpha Phi Delta is not all work and no play. The brothers pride themselves in successful stag and date parties each month, a dance each semester with neighboring col¬ leges and sororities in attendance, a smoker for pro¬ spective candidates for brotherhood each semester and various sporting events with other chapters of Alpha Phi Delta. j. abela s. orr j. sanderson a. o’toole m. failla a. fiorilli p. schietroma g. rossicone r. ansalone e. curty r. valvano a. communiello m. polito r. rau j. ippolito j. me court p. liberti j. bessich i am a member of the rabble in good standing. — WESTBROOK PEGLER 2 ' S a « ■a § -5 2! ■ s •- « 5! The academic year 1969-70 marked a rejuvenated Pi Al¬ pha, a fraternity which fulfilled to an eminent degree its’ noble aims. That is, the advancement of its’ mem¬ bers in both scholastic and social endeavors, with brotherhood and unity always foremost in mind. This was the task ably undertaken by a zealous executive board in early Sept. Rallying under the alert and able leadership of Archon, Dan Lynch, their new modera¬ tor, Bro. Francis McHugh, O.S.F., brother worked with brother to mold an active, praiseworthy organi¬ zation. Assisting Dan in his work were officers. Jack Coffey, Pete Palumbo, Eric McGuire, Tom Lo- Squadro, Dan Trucano, George Brennan, Joe Clark, etc. In keeping with a more ameliorated pledging pro¬ gram, Pi Alpha’s aim of quality and not quantity was again realized with the reception of six new brothers in the fall semester. They are brothers, Pete Yovine, Lou Dottrina, Steve Haran, Joe Penzone, Mike Crowley, and John Klemm. The underlying factor of Pi Alpha is its’ spirit. This spirit is, has been, and will continue to be, an integral part of the traditional spirit of St. Francis College. Through the sixty-four years of its existence, Pi Alpha has become the essence of the repeated phrase, “For God, country, and Saint Francis.” but because, if disgusted there we can always descend; but if we begin with the lowest , to ascend is impossible . 1. t. cashin 2. j. dark 3. d. lynch 4. d. trucano 5. t. healy 6. t. losquardro 7. g. brennan 8. t. lavelle 9. m. farrell 10. m. salogub 11. e. maguire 12. p. collins 13. s. haran 14. j. penzone 15. a. verga 16. p. palumbo 17. j. klemm 18. m. crowley 19. c. flaherty 20. v. keck 21. a. locaso 22. c. wasilewski 23. k. o’connell 24. 1. anemone 25. 1. cutrone 26. t. conlon 27. t. howley — COLTON (P U T i ma soeur est ma soeur pour jamais — BAU DELAIR dkx 1-+ c 73 i 73 c 3 ft ft c o t-t 3 H o ft — g 3 P 3 a cn C 5 c 5 2 3 ft ft ft o S. With an overall record of four wins and eight losses, the 1969 season had several strong highlights for the six man team. Senior John Serrao, team captain, ran the five mile course in 29 minutes flat. His best time this season was his 29:56, 3rd place, finish against Lehman and Brooklyn Poly. Sophomore Ed Machinski, running his first full year of compe¬ tition, knocked minutes off his during four successive meets, closing finally with a 33:18. Dennis Sullivan, another soph, took over the 3 spot with a best time of 31:56. Freshman Dennis Driscoll ran the fastest time of the year — 29:51. Tony Communiello, a soph, and freshman Tom Funke are two teammates who add to the sharp competitive spirit of the team. This spirit was exhibited in the annual MECCA tournament held at Sienna College, Albany, in which the Terriers fin¬ ished a strong fourth. In this meet, Serrao placed 6th with 23:47, 45 seconds off the 4.3 mile course record, and Driscoll ran 24:01 for 10th place. The thoughts of coach Jack Donovan are informative for he feels that lack of membership and support tend to cloud the true spirit of the team. FRANCIS CAFETERIA FOOD SERVICE DIRECTORS The 1970 FRANCISCAN is completed. This is truly an event worthy of the high¬ est celebration. The tightly packed schedules, the ever present deadlines, and the inev¬ itable personality conflicts are all things of the past. In retrospect, we must admit of mixed emotions. There is a certain amount of bitterness for all the things which could have been different. Sometimes everything around seemed to be driving us further from our goal. But then there were times when the stars smiled, the most important being final submission in early March. The reward for our efforts are here in the 211 pages you have already seen. We have tried to capture the spirit of St. Francis during the past year. We hope that you derive the same amount of satisfaction from reading the FRANCISCAN as we have in producing it. Sincerely, o c a Charles Robert Randall Editor-in-Chief “Our youth now have luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority disrespect for older people. Children nowadays are tyrants . . . they contradict their parents chatter before company, gobble their food, and tyrannize their teachers.” - SOCRATES 5th CENTURY B.C.
