brothers of JBrooklgn ARCHBISHOP McHALE Gave permission to the Mount Bellew Brothers to make a Foundation in America. ' First residence and school of the Franciscan Brothers in Brooklyn. the Fall of 1859 the two Brothers, with the help of a layman, Martin St. Ledger, converted the building into a combi- nation monastery and school, with living quarters for the Brothers established in the basement. Thus, Saint Francis Academy, the first private secondary school in the Diocese of Brooklyn, from which St. Francis College developed, was opened with a faculty of two Brothers and three laymen. In December of the same year, at their own request, the Franciscans were placed “pro tempore” under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Brooklyn. Shortly thereafter, the Franciscans purchased property on Butler Street and founded Brooklyn ' s first Franciscan Novitiate.
X he year 1868 saw the Brooklyn congregation of the Regular Order of Saint Francis receive legal status under the title, ‘The Saint Francis Monastery of the City of Brooklyn,” as granted by the Legislature of the State of New York. 0 n May 8, 1884, the New York State Legislature empowered the trustees to “establish a literary college in the City of Brooklyn under the title of St. Francis College, with the same power to confer diplomas and literary honors and degrees as is possessed by Universities and Colleges of this State ' The first Bachelor of Arts Degree was conferred in June, 1885; seven years later, the first Bachelor of Science degree was granted. —J ' ••• l r St. Leonard’s Academy was founded in 1880 for the pur¬ pose of meeting the educational needs of the Williamsburgh section of Brooklyn.
