“Che Class of 1 58 presents . . . THE CITY OF BROOKLYN 1858 john b. McCarthy Editor-in-Chief WAYNE J. WISDOM Associate Editor $ t. jfrancis College BROOKLYN, NEW YORK JAMES J. O’NEILL Business Manager dedication m e dedicate the Saint Francis College Annual to the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn on the occasion of their Centennial Anniversary. Since 1858 the Franciscan Brothers have labored among the people of Brooklyn, helping, guiding, informing. They have witnessed vast changes during this period of unprecedented economic, cultural, and social progress, adjusting to the times but still adhering to a thirteenth century concept which has remained a constant living thing —F ranciscanism. The next century is eagerly awaited. The vast horizons of technology and the marvels of the atomic age will offer no threat to a way of life that has survived the centuries. The horse and buggy era, the age of steel, of electronics, of space, make little difference to those motivated by the guiding principle of St. Francis—“My God and My All”. OF BROOKLYN 1958 31 Chronicle of the Franciscan ©, ne hundred years of labor dedicated to the education of American youth. This, in brief, is the story of the Franciscan Brothers. It is the story of a comparatively small band of men who have given unceasingly of their talents to strengthen youth with Supernatural Doctrine and to arm them with the knowledge of the arts and processes of the modern world. All this has been done in keeping with Christs command, “I have appointed you to go and bear fruit and that fruit should remain . . (JOHN XV, 16) BISHOP LOUGHLIN Tt, ►jght Reverend John Loughlin, d.d., upon being consecrated the first Bishop of Brooklyn, assumed the task of establishing a parish school system. He requested aid from the Irish Congregation of Franciscan Brothers. Two Franciscans, Brother John McMahon and Brother Vincent Hayes, arrived from Galway on May 31, 1858, to begin the new American foundation. MOUNT BELLEW in Ireland from which the first Franciscan Brothers came to Brooklyn. 4 brothers of JBrooklgn ARCHBISHOP McHALE Gave permission to the Mount Bellew Brothers to make a Foundation in America. ' First residence and school of the Franciscan Brothers in Brooklyn. the Fall of 1859 the two Brothers, with the help of a layman, Martin St. Ledger, converted the building into a combi- nation monastery and school, with living quarters for the Brothers established in the basement. Thus, Saint Francis Academy, the first private secondary school in the Diocese of Brooklyn, from which St. Francis College developed, was opened with a faculty of two Brothers and three laymen. In December of the same year, at their own request, the Franciscans were placed “pro tempore” under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Brooklyn. Shortly thereafter, the Franciscans purchased property on Butler Street and founded Brooklyn ' s first Franciscan Novitiate. X he year 1868 saw the Brooklyn congregation of the Regular Order of Saint Francis receive legal status under the title, ‘The Saint Francis Monastery of the City of Brooklyn,” as granted by the Legislature of the State of New York. 0 n May 8, 1884, the New York State Legislature empowered the trustees to “establish a literary college in the City of Brooklyn under the title of St. Francis College, with the same power to confer diplomas and literary honors and degrees as is possessed by Universities and Colleges of this State ' The first Bachelor of Arts Degree was conferred in June, 1885; seven years later, the first Bachelor of Science degree was granted. —J ' ••• l r St. Leonard’s Academy was founded in 1880 for the pur¬ pose of meeting the educational needs of the Williamsburgh section of Brooklyn. Known as the Saint Francis Literary Union at the turn of the century, they gave a successful presentation of Henry IV and the Merchant of Ghent. In 1925, the students adopted “The Troupers” as their official title, and made Adam and Eve their first production under the new name. In the years that followed, comedy and musical productions were the center of concentration. Student direction, which came into focus with The Rising of the Moon, was continued with the production of Death of a Salesman. In 1955, when Brother Giles, O.S.F. assumed direction, two major productions — The Hasty Heart and The Lady ' s Not For Burning were staged. Since then, ' productions of The Man Who Came to Dinner, My Three Angels, and Hope Is A Thing With Feathers have won the group wide acclaim. Schaem, ’40 197 hen city lights twinkle a friendly ‘good night ' and a slowly darkening skyline marks the end of another busy day — one marvels at the routine coordination so essential to the success of a great metropolis. Significant, and above all other human attributes, is — friendliness, that very fair and honest regard for the other fellow. Proof, that ENGRAVATONE practices this golden rule, is a growing list of satisfied friends — and it is not surprising that singularly better and economical college and school annuals are consistently produced under our banner of good fellowship and cooperation.
