OUR THEME touches the very core of human exist¬ ence for it represents an interdependence of the most fundamental kind. OUR THEME has its serious moments, its comic elements and a vital significance which necessarily transcends even the allotted years of college life. OUR THEME is the relationship between students and their parents. BROOKLYN, NEW YORK ccCCMtum In these days of marital dissolution and widespread disregard for the sacred bonds of marriage and when closer family har¬ mony is necessary, we humbly dedicate this record of achievement to our parents —to the inspiration and guiding light of our young Catholic lives. May they, with us, continue on the path of life — fol¬ lowing the holy and pious example of another family — that of a carpenter of Nazareth. “And He tvent down with them and came to Nazareth and teas subject to them ...” LUKE 2:51 4 0 0 0 The members of the Senior Class wish to offer their deepest sympathy and prayers for the deceased parents of our fellow stu¬ dents: sympathy for the loss felt by the loved ones left behind; prayers to speed those in purgatory to their reward in heaven. We rejoice for those parents who have reached their final end in the Beatific Vision Uequitscat in pace 6 Rename. O. S. 7ft. A.. PRESIDENT O.S.7 7ft. 4., fi. DEAN SwCAex O. S. 7ft. i.. .V. The 1954-1955 Council was blessed with interested, capable and dynamic leaders who, through their unsel¬ fish efforts, have made the Council one of the most progressive in the history of the College. To begin with, the celebration of the Marian year at St. Francis reached its apex when a public Mass— to which the Newman Clubs of the Various secular colleges were invited—was celebrated at St. Paul’s Church. The Council, working closely with all campus organizations, undertook the sponsorship of an Open School Day to familarize the parents of the students with St. Francis. A Successful Christmas Toy Drive was also initiated by the Council, assisted by committees of Pi Alpha and Phi Rlio Pi Fraternities. Truly, in preserving the best in the St. Francis tradi¬ tion, and in stressing progress, the Council has earned the respect of all at St. Francis. 56 PASCAL ESEMPLARE DANIEL WALSH FERDINAND BARBATSCHI ScotU S cCet f LEO KEEGAN ARTHUR MADDALONI JAMES DRISCOLL JAMES FOSTER STEPHEN WHELAN GEORGE BLACK 57 GERARD BAXTER PASCAL ESEMPLARE AMONG STUDENTS IN AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES RICHARD NOLAN DANIEL WALSH JOHN DeRISO JAMES FOSTER JOHN FLYNN JOSEPH McGLOIN JOSEPH GOODEY 58 The International Relations Club consists of History, Sociology and Economics majors. It aims to further an appre¬ ciation of the literary and artistic contrihutions of the various cul¬ tures of the world. This year a diversified and enlightened program was undertaken. Included in the program were opera, ballet, the Philharmonic and the theatre. The Humanities Club, in its third year at St. Francis, has become one of the active organizations in the College and has proved to he one of the mainstays of extra-curricular activities. 64 The Science Clubs have been organized to pro¬ vide those students who have a special interest in chemistry, biology or mathematics with the oppor¬ tunity of pursuing their work. President . . Vice President Secretary . . Treasurer . . OFFICERS J. McGLOIN L. KEEGAN . J. HEARN D. WALSH The Business Club is intended to arouse the interests of the student body in current busi¬ ness affairs and practices through the medium of guest speakers and informal discussions by the members. 66 The Vocation Club is composed of those students who are interested in entering the priesthood or religious life. All pre-theological students are required to be active mem¬ bers of this club. A special feature of this group is a day of recollection each month. Ond i 0 St The Third Order of St. Francis, founded by St. Francis of Assisi, was organized for the layman to ‘‘lead a perfect life,” and to study, practice and promulgate the teachings of St. Francis. Tertiaries take no vows; yet by following the principles of St. Francis, they participate in the num¬ erous graces and benefits of the Franciscans. 7 The Cord, Freshman handbook of St. Francis College, underwent a “face-lifting” job this past sum¬ mer. Since many changes had taken place around the College over the last two years, it became necessary to bring the handbook up to date. To handle this task, a committee of three volunteers supervised the revision, surrender¬ ing a few nights a week during July and August. The committee consisted of Editor-in-Chief Ben Occhiogrosso, ’56, Associate Edi¬ tors Tom Scully, ’56 and Buddy Brogan, ’56. The purpose of the Math Club is to stimulate interest in mathematics and closely related fields. Under the guidance of Brother Leo, the mem¬ bers learn how to use such instruments as the sextant, angle mirror and the pantograph. Practical experience is gained by numerous field trips during the college year. 68 Studmt ceiden The Student Group Leaders are a relatively new idea at St. Francis. Comprised of those students with high extra-curricular and academic standing, they attempt to encourage and assist the student body in all phases of college life. %9ee ' S- St. Francis College is represented in the N.F.C.C.S. by four repre¬ sentatives elected at the beginning of every school year by the Student Council. The Federation was formed to develop lay Catholic leadership among college students. 69 The Troupers, continuing their long line of stage successes, presented this year an adaptation of George Batson’s ‘‘Ramsliackle Inn.” The play, a mystery farce in three acts, was ably directed by Mr. Henry Magliato, a familiar figure in the his¬ tory of the Terrier acting guild. Brother Celestine, Moderator of the Troupers, did a fine job supervising the over-all production. Student leaders, who also proved able in their positions, included Ben Occhiogrosso, ’56, President, John DeRiso, ’55, Stage Manager, and John Rush, ’56, Business Manager. Minus the backbone of last year’s squad, the Lcnze Brothers, the Terriers relied heavily upon the pitching of Tom Lough- ery and Dan McCarthy. Ralph D’Amato, Frank Scotti, and Russ Sullivan provided the outfield j)ower, while the heavy liitting Trizzino did tlie hulk of tlic catching. Joe Saner, Tom Higgins, Art Mclnerncy and several new Frosh hopefuls rounded out the squad. 78 Mine D League Let’s see you tag one ' April 12 N.Y.C. After losing their first set of games to Cooper Union, the Terriers bounced right back and rolled over Columbia and Queens College— taking five out of six games. The present trend of vic¬ tories is a fitting and well earned award. Last years’ green team has gained the necessary poise and confi¬ dence which conies from constant practice. Mainly responsible for the ‘‘new look” is Captain Ray Boehm, whose steady “pin dropping” has pulled out many a close contest for the Red and Blue.
