these hal lowed halls After having settled down under the guidance of Sr Rlchburga and with Betty Underberg as president, we joined extra curriculars whole heartedly A few of us were admitted to the Chimes staff Quite a number were in the girls' glee club, two appeared in thi Soya' chorus, and not less than seven went out for athletics In the tight carnival queen contest, our candidate, Eileen Anderson, placed third In November we were moved to deep contemplation by the soul stirring conferences and meditations of our first retreat, conducted by Father Rallencotter On the feast of the Immaculate Conception the majority of the class was received into the Sodallty Bolstered by experience and undaunted by the reduction of our numbmrtotwen ty nine, we set out in the fall of 1949, again under Sister Richburga, to be the most active sophomores With Norma, Armond, John L and Phyllis G we did just that Chimes staffers David, Phyllis, and Norma assisted in pre senting the school paper bi weekly in the Hankinson News In a hard fought competition, our queen candidate largie took second place le were represen ted in the newly organized Student Council by David L and Armond, who also helped with John L and David B to form the short lived SFA Band Our sea soned athletes furthered a somewhat successful season Retreat came again, was better understood, and considerably more appreciated Fr Stoudt led us As full fledged upperclassmen, we welcomed Phyllis Thein and Renee Dicken in September l950 to join our battle of minds and books The project of us ju niors was, of course, the prom With the excellent help of Sister Francis and the officers, John L , Phyllis T , Grace, and David L the theme 'Star Dust' was carried out in beautiful decorat1ons,and the grand music of the Tom po Kings made our prom the best ever Our dramatic talent appeared in 'Kid tributors to Chimes, while David L became its sports editor Athletes Armond, Wilbur, John L , David L , Vernon, John Nissen, and Luke helped to make a banner year by placing second in Wild Rice Conference football, dis trict basketball, and holiday tournament Armond had the honor of attending the High School All Star Banquet in Wahpeton largie won the privilege of singing over WDAY for a whole week A very successful retreat, directed by Father Langfield, took our minds from the stark fleeting ideas of naturalism to the spiritual, lasting thoughts of God Our representative to Girls'State was Shirley, to Boys'State went David L and John L , sponsored by Hankinson and Lidgerwood American Legion Posts respectively As we entered our last stage of the quest for knowledge, the class had dwind led to twenty three Luke, Eileen, and Renee did not come back With Sister Dorothea as advisor, we elected David L , Armond, Norma, and Phyllis G as officers The senior project, IEIORIES of '52,was directed by Editor Phyllis G and her assistants, Phyllis T and Margie Football Captain John L led the team through a comparatively successful season 'Spooky Tavern' starred Margie, the two Davids, Norma, Shirley, and Jerome lertes, who is now in the U S Air Force Carnival Queen Grace Roth brought flying colors to her class David L and Margie attended the Diocesan CYO convention where David acted as chairman and was chosen delegate to the first National Cathol1cYouth conven tion Later he was elected president of the lahpeton Deanery CYO Our last retreat, conducted by Father Breitenbeck, brought with it the realization that soon our group would no longer work, play and pray together Three of our classmates Dianna Hell, Roselle Loegering and laggie Schatz entered the postulancy of the St Francis Convent in January Roselle had shortly be fore won first with an essay that was published in the North Dakota0utdoors Now we, the Class of '52, are standing at the threshold of public life le move into a world full of cynics, unbelievers, and fatalists le are armed not only with a diploma, the sign of our achievement, but also with the holy Catholic Faith, our spiritual weapon that was strengthened by our many years at SFA lith these and the confidence built up in these years, we can look forward to victory in man's never ending battle with life O O . . ., napping Betty' and 'Tiger House. We helped to put the carnival crowd into a gay mood through the one act Elmer.lary Ellen worked harder than ever to win the crown, but alas,we had agafn to take only fourth place. Germaine came inas cheerleader, and with her we were working from the sidelines to keep both the football and the basketball teams in winning order. In January, Catherine Sell left our ranks to choose the better part. She is now a postulant in the convent of the Sisters of St. Francis.
