aI'?ll!2 an .71-igufe fo our ..x4fAAfic irecfor REV. ANTHONY wAs1ELEwsK1 There is a bond of fellowship between sport fans. Love and knowledge of the game of football can make two hearts kin. To know a game, to be able to play it well for all the joy there is in it, characterizes a man among boys and girls as a Good Sport . To be a good sport and at the same time to maintain one's dignity is a special gift of personality. We concede that gift to Father Wasielewski. We, as students of Saint Florian High School, wish to thank Father Wasielewski for his kindness to us, for the training we received from him, for the pleasurable sport he provided for us, and for the lessons not in our text books which he taught us. Mindful of the dignity of his position and scholarship, we consider it a tribute to his character and personality that the students of Saint Florian High School can respect his dignity, enjoy his companionship, and look upon him as a good sport . We did not realize, during our association, how much we should miss him if he were to leave. But now when the test has come we are deeply grieved. But like good sports we too shall accept it and offer our prayers that he shall be happy and successful in his new labors and find ' sincere friends wherever he goes. Good-bye Fatherl Remember us in your prayers too. . goofga lgmum 1' Aiming at a second straight championship, the Lancers opened their league season with a home game against St. Thomas. Unfortunately, inexperience and penalties proved too much of a handicap. St. Thomas scored in the second quarter, and St. Florian was behind 6-0 which proved to be the final score. A late drive bogged down and the season started on a sour note. Aroused by the defeat, St. Florian really tore into their next opponents, St. Rose, and came out on the long end ofa 41 -0 score . The issue was never in doubt after the first half when St . Florian had already assumed a 13-0 lead. In the third and fourth quarters, Tommy Krajnovic scored two TD's on two plunges, also making one extra point. Gerry Krajnovic, Lenny Gutkowskiand Ed Grombelski made one touchdowna piece. After Richie Wartman blocked a punt, Gerald Ernatt fell on the ball for another tally. Two Joe's, Simon and Augustyniak, accounted for 4 extra points--the former 3 and the latter 1. Lancers hopes brightened, butwere almost snuffed out by a close game with Nativity. An all day rain turned Mack Park into a sea of mud. Only one Lancer, .Toe Simon, was able to cross the goal line as St. Florian eked out a narrow 6-0 decision. The Lancer machine was running along smoothly and Coach Art Macioszczyk had reason to encision a second title season. St. Florian rolled to their third straight victory with a convincing 20-7 triumph over St. Bernard. Joe Augustynlak, Leo Rudolph and Ron Borkowski all scored for the red-and-white. Tom Krajnovic andAugustyniak got the extra points. By winning, St. Florian raised its record to 3 wins and 1 loss. A chance for the championship jinged on the game with St. Philip. However, St. Phi1ip's pass offense mastery smoked them into a quick 13-O lead. The Lancers held St. Philip scoreless in the second quarter but they themselves failed to capitalize. In the third quarter, St. Philip- scored a quick TD on another pass but St. Florian got it bach when Bill Pola.kowski pounced on an opponent's fumble in the end zone. St. Philip scored again in the dying moments to make the final score 25-6. St. Florian then put their attention on the traditional game with St. Ladislaus, in the annual Goodfellow Game. The first division squad showed their prowess by making two quick tallies and going ahead IZ-0. They scored again before the half to push out in front 18-0. In the second half, St. Florian started moving but it was too late and they eventually lost 25-13. Ed Grombelski stole the ball from the Greyhound QB and raced for a TD. Ray Rubago passed to Joe Simon for another score. Bill Polakowski converted the point after TD. The loss brought to a close the 1951 Lancers football season with St. Florian in the runner-up spot. The season's record stood at an even .500 on three triumphs and three defeats.
