W,f'.5.ir1g1' fo Oni' .!4.i.ff.ifanf paJfor.i The minstrels of old have' sung of the sadness of farewellg the great poets have written of the grief of parting. Nature itself clings to that which exists. As the sun sinks into the west at the close of day, it lingers for a moment as if to delay the parting, then sends out its rays of crimson glory as if to remain a little longer. Then when the sun has set the golden tints linger long after the sun has gone. How like to nature is the human heart. How sad to everyone is separationg how deep is our losing one from out of our midst, one whom we have all learned to love and to respect. It is with sincere grief that we bid farewell to Father Francis Kozlowski who has served well for five long years as assistant pastor in St. Florian Parish, and to Father Anthony Wasielewski who has been our Athletic Director for five years also. by their interest in our activities, their fairness and generosity, they have endeared themselves to everyone with whom they have dealt. But grief is often selfish and brings sadness to the one for whom we grieve. So we shall accept our parting as a sacrifice and offer it as a prayer for their success in other fields where they have been called. Good - bye! God bless you Father Kozlowski and Father Wasielewski. May good fortune strew flowers on your pathway. Our prayers go with you while a fond memory shall always linger. FAREWELL! 6. ANTHONY wAs1ELEwsK1 There is a bond of fellowship between sport fans. Love and knowledge of the game of football can make two hearts kin. To know a game, to be able to play it well for all the joy there is in it, characterizes a man among boys and girls as a Good Sport . To be a good sport and at the same time to maintain one's dignity is a special gift of personality. We concede that gift to Father Wasielewski. We, as students of Saint Florian High School, wish to thank Father Wasielewski for his kindness to us, for the training we received from him, for the pleasurable sport he provided for us, and for the lessons not in our text books which he taught us. Mindful of the dignity of his position and scholarship, we consider it a tribute to his character and personality that the students of Saint Florian High School can respect his dignity, enjoy his companionship, and look upon him as a good sport . We did not realize, during our association, how much we should miss him if he were to leave. But now when the test has come we are deeply grieved. But like good sports we too shall accept it and offer our prayers that he shall be happy and successful in his new labors and find ' sincere friends wherever he goes. Good-bye Fatherl Remember us in your prayers too. . goofga lgmum 1' Aiming at a second straight championship, the Lancers opened their league season with a home game against St. Thomas. Unfortunately, inexperience and penalties proved too much of a handicap. St. Thomas scored in the second quarter, and St. Florian was behind 6-0 which proved to be the final score. A late drive bogged down and the season started on a sour note. Aroused by the defeat, St. Florian really tore into their next opponents, St. Rose, and came out on the long end ofa 41 -0 score . The issue was never in doubt after the first half when St . Florian had already assumed a 13-0 lead. In the third and fourth quarters, Tommy Krajnovic scored two TD's on two plunges, also making one extra point. Gerry Krajnovic, Lenny Gutkowskiand Ed Grombelski made one touchdowna piece. After Richie Wartman blocked a punt, Gerald Ernatt fell on the ball for another tally. Two Joe's, Simon and Augustyniak, accounted for 4 extra points--the former 3 and the latter 1. Lancers hopes brightened, butwere almost snuffed out by a close game with Nativity. An all day rain turned Mack Park into a sea of mud. Only one Lancer, .Toe Simon, was able to cross the goal line as St. Florian eked out a narrow 6-0 decision. The Lancer machine was running along smoothly and Coach Art Macioszczyk had reason to encision a second title season. St. Florian rolled to their third straight victory with a convincing 20-7 triumph over St. Bernard. Joe Augustynlak, Leo Rudolph and Ron Borkowski all scored for the red-and-white. Tom Krajnovic andAugustyniak got the extra points. By winning, St. Florian raised its record to 3 wins and 1 loss. A chance for the championship jinged on the game with St. Philip. However, St. Phi1ip's pass offense mastery smoked them into a quick 13-O lead. The Lancers held St. Philip scoreless in the second quarter but they themselves failed to capitalize. In the third quarter, St. Philip- scored a quick TD on another pass but St. Florian got it bach when Bill Pola.kowski pounced on an opponent's fumble in the end zone. St. Philip scored again in the dying moments to make the final score 25-6. St. Florian then put their attention on the traditional game with St. Ladislaus, in the annual Goodfellow Game. The first division squad showed their prowess by making two quick tallies and going ahead IZ-0. They scored again before the half to push out in front 18-0. In the second half, St. Florian started moving but it was too late and they eventually lost 25-13. Ed Grombelski stole the ball from the Greyhound QB and raced for a TD. Ray Rubago passed to Joe Simon for another score. Bill Polakowski converted the point after TD. The loss brought to a close the 1951 Lancers football season with St. Florian in the runner-up spot. The season's record stood at an even .500 on three triumphs and three defeats. q-.Q L KJ, an C0121 On fge gyricliron LASTROW: JerryWojnarfProperty Mgr.J, Leo Rudolph, Henry Kowalski, .Toe Simon, Eddie Grombelski, Ted Radzialowski, James Nowicki, Ray Lu- casinski KProperty Mgr.J. Wasielewski, Athletic Director. It happens every spring to St. Florian as it does throughout this great land. With the coming of balmy breezes and the warm sun, the young men's fancies turn again to baseball and thoughts of the diamond. Art Macioszczyk, who is also head grid and hoop mentor, will coach the Lancer nine . With most positions on the team open, a lively battle for the individual posts should develop. Success of the St. Florian baseball team will depend in a large measure on how well the first-year men of last year have learned their job. Since the team is composed of almost all lower classmen, Lancer fans will see emphasis placed on speed and hustle rather than on grace. This season St. Florian hopes to obtain its share of vic- tories by again utilizing teamwork and spirit. If the latter part of last season was an indication, 1952 Lancer fans are in store for an aggressive and improving team. By utilizing their own talents and following the sound advice of Coach Macioszczyk the baseball team will continue to roll. After expending much time and energy to the rookies last season, Art is hoping the results will be in evidence this year. How- ever, even with the handicap of inexperience, St. Florian will continue to carry out the fine tradition of Lancer baseball teams of the past. The experience she has attained throughout her many years in girls athletics has been the foundation for the physical development of our bodies and also the alertness of our minds. New charm and spark was added to our cheering squad by these charming girls: Left to right: Eileen Plizga, Carol Sosinksi, Patricia Kas- trau, Bernadine Pokoj, Ann- ette Poplawski, and Lorraine Chmielewski. girg Zgarfefgaf The genuine fundamentals of sports- manship have been deeply instilled in the hearts of every individual through her unending and tireless efforts. Our coach, not only taught but also exemplified dependability .... Truth, even though an admission of ignorance, establishes confidence. The 1951-1952 Lancerettes team hada very success- ful season coping the Central Division Championship. They had no difficulty in downing their opponents in six league games to gain the added distinction of be- coming undefeated champions. This season marked the end of their high school basketball career for seven Seniors. Namely: Rochelle Hamera, Constance Grajewski, Jane Silarksi, Hedwig Bradley, Phyllis Filipovich, Dorothy Jasinski, Chris- tine Kasprzyk, Eugenia Godlewski. ppreciafion . . . To the Mothers and Fathers of the Seniors of 1952, who so generously sacrificed themselves, in spite of adverse circumstances, that their sons and .daughters receive a Catholic High School education, we, the seniors, filially and affectionately dedicate this page of the Florham. Detroit Ecllson 93 unees of Progress No one could ever call a typical 1880 telephone operator light-headed. Especially when she had her headset on- all six pounds six ounces of it. That 1880 headset, though, was a good piece of equipment-the best of its day. But with its box-like transmitter and leather harness, it couldn't, by any stretch of the imagination, be called comfort-able. Today, of course, it's a different story. The telephone operator now wears a streamlined headset that weighs only nine ounces-93 ounces less than the 1880 model. It fits her like a new spring bonnet and makes her job as the Voice with a Smilen easier than ever before. And speaking of jobs, if you're graduating this year, and are looking for an interesting, important job, Michigan Bell may have one for you. Why not drop in soon for an interview?
