An honor student, his ability was by no means limited to the classroom. He was THE SKULLCAP busi- ness manager and an editorial writer for The Fiaielimz. His bass voice lent itself well to the choir and dramatics. He held the important role of Pontius Pilate in The Betrayal. Paulis favorite sports are tennis and football. His love of nature took him on frequent cross-country hikes, where he added to his knowledge of bird lore. He will continue his studies in the Byzantine-Slavonic rite at SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary. DONALD BRICE St. Alphonsus Church Wheeling, West Virginia Don's calm manner is an insight to his personality. Whether performing his duties as head sacristan or acting as seminary butcher, his way is always the calm, exact way. He could also be found listening to opera or other classical music, when not busy as literary editor of THE SKULLCAP. Don is an asset to any dramatic performance because of his ability as a makeaup artist and cos- tumer. But perhaps his most striking quality is his way of philosophizing situations. His way of evaluating daily problems will certainly be useful to him as he begins the second half of his journey to the priesthood, MAURICE BURNSWORTH St. Joseph Church Derry, Pennsylvania It may be a dismal day outside the school, but soon storms of gloom become sun rays of joy when Maurice brings that precious letter from home. Yes, Mau- rice is our mailman, but with letters or not, he always has a message of wit spiced with his constant smile. When such activities as organizing the lenten play and helping in the monastery kitchen claimed his time, Maurice could dream at least of a snow-covered slope for his skis, or a hard-hit softball drop- ping behind the center fielder. His winning personality should serve Maurice well at St. Vincent's. PATSY COLUCCI St. Michael Church Butler, Pennsylvania There he sits with propped-up feet, open collar, and rolled-up sleeves, en- gulfed in a rising cloud of smoke from his favorite pipe and the beautiful strains of Aida filling his ear-the picture of contentment and Pat. This, however, for an editor is a rare picture, for time is precious when a new SKULLCAP must be published. When it comes to matters literary, Pat's delicate touch of pleasing simplicity in poetry and prose cop first honors. A winning smile, a word of en- couragement, and a pun characterize Pats wonderful spirit which goes to the Capuchins in july. PAUL DURKIN St. Margaret Church Greentree, Pennsylvania Friendliness seems to be a byword with Paul. His beaming smile and his generous manner make even a stranger feel at ease in his company. With his tenor voice he has been active in the different choir groups. His love for sports has prompted him to join the sports committee. Paul has the task of running the motion-picture projectors for the movies shown in the Dramatic Hall. At any time of the day he is a good fellow in a friendly card game or arguing over the sports page. Paul will continue his studies for the diocesan priesthood at St. Vincent's. CHARLES GASPER St. Mary Church Allison, Pennsylvania Charlie may easily be classified as one of the more talented members of the graduating class. During study periods one could usually find him explaining a difficult chemistry problem or Greek structure to one of his fellow classmates. As photographic editor of both The Fiflelifm and THE SKULLCAP, Charlie spent much of his time in the darkroom. Nevertheless. he was always ready for a quick handball game or simply a quiet recreation period spent smoking and talking in the club room. Charlie will be remembered mainly for his generosity, his pleas- ant smile, and his pleasant personality. Charlie will don the Capuchin habit in july. WILLIAM HARVEY Holy Name Church Ebensburg, Pennsylvania Bill is the youngest graduate this year and perhaps the richest, for a wealth is found in his treasury of smiles. This gay spirit of Bill's spreads a warm glow over his friendship. Gifted with unwavering motives and strong determination, Bill rounds off these qualities with precision. He leaves no field of endeavor un- tried and finds pleasure in all. A hike in the woods, a set of tennis, and an oper- atic aria afford Bill a varied agenda for recreation. When the Capuchin habit clothes him, Bill's enviable simplicity and jovial sincerity will add the polish to a new Franciscan. PAUL GLASS St. Peter Church Brownsville, Pennsylvania The walking encyclopedia of the class is undoubtedly Paul Glass. Paul's wealth of knowledge concerning general topics has won him that title. His subtle humor has found clever but harmless sarcasm for its medium of expression. Paul's greatest extracurricular activity is The Fidelimz. As editor-in-chief of the school paper, it was his responsibility to keep it at a high journalistic level. An examination of any of his editions of The Fidelimz is ample proof that Paul is not one who shirks his duty. Paul also enjoys writing short stories and smoking mellow briars. The Capuchin novitiate will be Paul's next residence. JAMES HEYL St. Bernard Church Mt. Lebanon. Pennsylvania If upon approaching the story-worn front walk, one sees a puff of smoke, a brisk pace, and hears a hearty laugh rising from an interesting conversation, he knows it can be only one man-jim. With his humor and carefree ways, jim's brisk pace well characterizes his precision and ehiciency in his work. An all- around man, Jim managed The Fiflelimz from the business angle. In recreation, every sport finds jim its enthusiast. This healthy combination of studies, sports, and fellowship make jim the jim we always want to know as he continues his work at St. Vincent Seminary. WILLIAM HOMOLAK St. Cecilia Church Glassport, Pennsylvania Bill is the live wire of the graduating class. Witli his delightful sense of humor and his interesting conversation, his companionship is pure bliss after a dreary day of class. He is a whiz at languages, but found no future in scien- tific branches. Active in handball, volleyball, and bowling, he is also organist, choir leader, band member, and a capable actor on the stage, Bill is noted for his clever impersonations of teachers and students, and always has his audience roar- ing with laughter. He will continue his impersonations this summer when he dons the Capuchin habit to imitate the life of St. Francis. ROBERT KARL SS. Peter and Paul Church Endicott, New York If Bob is a sample of what New York produces, Pennsylvanians must fin- ally concede that something good comes from our northern neighbor. Versatile by nature, Bob usually ends up high in his every endeavor. This success stems from his healthy philosophy that honest effort goes a long way. Wliether run- ning the snow plow, presiding over the College Club, playing hockey, studying Newman, or leading calisthentics, Bob gives everything he has. His vigorous spirit contains a sincerity to be treasured. These gems of character composing a fine seminarian will go to SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary of the Byzantine- Slavonic rite diocese of Pittsburgh. JOSEPH LEITEM St. Peter Church Butler, Pennsylvania Joe will be remembered for his efficiency and ever-willingness to do a favor. His straightforward and genial personality were useful assets in his duties as seminary chauffeur and assistant business manager of THE SKULLCAP. He was also head monitor of the St. john Berchmans Society. joe's classroom ability was well attested to by his position on the honor roll and his regular interest in studies. Basketball and handball are his favorite sports. As for relaxation, Joe likes a short walk and sometimes a friendly argument. He plans to enter St. Con- rad Novitiate as a Capuchin novice this summer. STEPHEN MALOSKY St. Joseph Church Clairton, Pennsylvania Never too busy to do a favor seems to best sum up Steve's personality traits, and his ability to take a joke is a close runner-up. Yet, Steve is a busy man. As president of the Mission Unit, he has shown a great zeal for the foreign missions. His business-like methods of raising funds for the missions and instilling zeal into the members of the unit are well known. Steve's evenings are usually spent in interesting conversation between puffs of a mellow cigar. St. Vincent's will claim Steve next fall. CLAIR MARONEY St. Mary Church Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania Clair is a man of many interests. Besides his keen ability in the classroom and on the campus, he is intensely interested in current topics and is always ready to debate the latest happenings in national politics or world affairs. Clair is the man to see, too, about the prospects of the St. Louis Cardinals or Notre Dame Irish. Regardless of what he is doing, he is always the center of the crowd. Clair has a hard time suppressing that unruly Irish grin of his, and even the sober black of his cassock at St. Vincent's next fall will not erase that smile. ALEXANDER PLEBAN SS. Cyril and Methodius Church Fairchance, Pennsylvania Due to his wide reading and fine memory, Al is usually able to give the facts in any discussion. No matter if the subject is ancient history or the latest novel or movie, he is equally acquainted with all. His favorite studies, however, are languages. Always ready for athletics, he took part in all sportsg but bowling, basketball, and tennis claimed his highest interest. For relaxation he is satished with a good book, but often he could be found in a card game or just listening to the radio. Al is bound for St. Vincent's and the diocese this fall. ORLANDO POZZUOLI t St. Lawrence Church Hillsville, Pennsylvania If free time were more abundant at St. Fidelis, many more library book cards would bear the name, Orlando Pozzuoli. Reading, to Lundy, is as natural as breathing. But, do not think that all of Lundy's time is spent in an easy chair with a good book in his hand. Baseball and football also claim a share of that precious time, for his educated southpaw seems to know all the tricks of control in pitching and passing. We know that Lundy's magnetic personality and great sense of humor will keep them smiling at St. Vincent's in future years. A daily stroll. GENO RIVI Saint Mary Church Freeport, Pennsylvania Geno is one of the most versatile men of the graduating class. He has al- ways shown a great interest in his studies as well as his various extracurricular activities. Wlhether he is crooning a popular song or singing in the choir, or whether he is whizzing down a steep slope on skis, Geno does so in his character- istic good-natured manner. He is also manager of the mission store, driver of one of the seminary automobiles, and regular member of the sisters' crew. Geno's top quality, however, is his capability for being an all-around good seminarian and a real friend of all. St. Vincent's is Geno's next stop. FREDERICK SCHILI. Sr. Bernard Church New Washington, Ohio Fred's determination and perseverance are easily his most outstanding qual- ities. Both in studies and athletics he has a way of giving his all for whatever he does. Fred is quite a handy man with automobiles and on free afternoons one is almost sure to find him at the garages. As a monitor of the St. john Berchmans Society, he taught many high school freshmen to serve Mass. He plays nearly all sports, but prefers football and tennis. Fred's ready humor and general good nature make him an unforgettable favorite with everyone. He will study for the diocese of Toledo this fall. CLEMENS SCHLUETER Our Lady of Lourdes Church East Palestine, Ohio Clem has been called the diversionist of the class. This is because of his boundless enthusiasm for his current hobbies. He speaks fluent German, and this has prompted him to rearrange the vast collection of German volumes in the Ger- man Room. Clem also entertains a love for the classics of the great composers, especially the works of Beethoven, Bach, and Brahms. His interest in piano and semiclassic music led him to develop the high school musical talent into a glee club. Now he is finally an ardent shutter bug, known for his experiments in photography. Clem plans to add another interest soon when he joins the Capu- chins as a novice. lim and 171114 111119 tbl G1 fllllllllft r How to enjoy .1 cross countrx hlke What happens now? High School Sophomores Preparing for their fixture role as apostles of Christ, the sophomores have completed two years of training. Their views have been widened by their new studies of biology and German. To them fell the greatest share of work in bird banding, since this is an extracurricular activity of biology. The sophomores' sharp-shooting basketball team is an example of the class's ability in athletics. To their credit is the great enthusiasm which they dis- played toward the missions. They also showed their literary ability by supplying the Jzuzim' Gemr with many compositions. Their line class spirit and gen- eral good-naturedness will be of great value to them as they proceed to their goal. Fifth row: P. Nies, J. Eisenhuth, A. Neff, M. Kozacheson. J. Ferrer, R. Koslow. Thou Art a Priest Forever The scene of the Last Supper has inspired the greatest artists to take up their paints and brushes. and portray that inspiring scene on canvas. These mas- terpieces have merited the acclaim of millions of art lovers for centuries. On February 2, 1951, the scene of the Last Supper came to life in the seminary chapel. This scene occurred during the two-hour ceremony, during which the Most Rev. John Francis Dearden, Bishop of Pittsburgh, raised four Capuchin deacons and one diocesan deacon to the priesthood. This representation of the Last Supper excelled every piece of art on that same subject in its solemnity, bril- liance, and impressive beauty. Christ again spoke His eternal words Do this in com- memoration of Me to the live young deacons, just as He did more than nineteen hundred years ago, when He raised Peter. John, James, and the other apostles to the priesthood. The five new apostles whom Christ commissioned to preach the Gospel to every living creature were: Fathers Paul Farkas. Stephen Rowe. Norman Stuber, and Julius Laurenzi. all Capuchins. and Father Edwin L. Kaczmarek of the Pittsburgh diocese. Frater Paschal Kneip, O.S.B., studying at St. Vincent Seminary, received the order of deacon. Fathers Paul Farkas of Pittsburgh. Stephen Rowe of Rochester, and Norman Stuber of Ford City graduated from St. Fidelis in 194141, and Father Julius Laurenzi of Aliquippa is a graduate of the class of 1945. May the Divine Priest grant that the harvest of these new apostles be great. and may He grant that the future apostles now preparing for their ordination day, may keep that inspiring scene of the Last Supper ever before their eyes. Gateway to Recreation Students of St. Fidelis take to athletics in the same way that a man reaches for his favorite briar as a source of enjoyment and relaxation. Athletics provide an excellent way to offset the strain of the routine of seminary life. When autumn breezes blew over the countryside, students swarmed to the handball and volleyball courts, while fast-moving football games were played on the ball field. The heavy snows of winter drew throngs to near- by hillsides for hours of tobogganing and skiing. Dur- ing the shorter recreation periods the gymnasium hum- med with activity and the bowling alleys tumbled from steady use. Hockey reigned in the bleak post- Christmas weather, as class battled class on the slip- pery area of Lake Norman. Spring introduced base- ball and tennis, bringing to a close a year packed full of sports activity. Basketball Climaxing a thrilling basketball campaign, Bob Schuster's Foul-Fiends emerged basketball league champions by decisively trumping Pleban's Pacers 80-31. Action in the league is keener and closer than any in the school and for that reason interest in the league ran high. The Foul-Fiends came out on top by beat- ing three other strong quintets in the league, Dat- tilo's Knickerbockers, who ended in second place, Pleban's Pacers, and Burnsworth's Dukes in that or- der. johnson of the champions -captured individual scoring honors hitting the hoop for 152 points in six games for a 25.3 average per game. Dattilo followed closely with a 23.8 game average, scoring 119 points in five encounters. The traditional Thanksgiving Day Cleric-College Varsity game provided some of the best competition of the year. Though it ended in defeat for the Col- lege, 49-44 in overtime, it was not decided until the last forty-Five seconds. Rounding out the important games of the year the St. Fidelis Varsity showed their old mastery over Sr. Vincent's by defeating the alumni now studying there 59-35. justi pushes one up. 1951 hardwood champions-Hatala, Lupoli, Schuster, johnson, Baur, Paquette. The first dramatic presentation of the year was Career Angel. a melodramatic comedy directed by Father Daniel. Lawrence justi as Guardian Angel enacted the role as protector of Brother Seraphim, played by john Beyer. The hilarious production of Hou' zllffth ll7l7flff.'.fzl!L'.Q directed by Father Kenny. was presented by the high school juniors. Leading roles were played by james Brown and Robert Meyer. Beyer and Paquette at work on Frost and Pierce. Bambeck, Busch, Russo, and Huttinger. Sisters' Crew The duties of the sisters' crew are many and varied. They are the ones who carry the canned goods, fresh vegetables, and fruit from the cool- er to the kitchen. They dispose of the waste paper and empty cans, wash windows, grind dry bread, and do odd jobs for the sisters. And all agree that the sisters' cake and cof- fee is ample reward for their work. Butchers Two good authorities on Wh21I'S cookin' at St. Fidelis are our butchers. Hundreds of pounds of beef, pork, and veal pass under their meat cleavers each month. To watch them work, one is usually astound- ed at seeing cleavers fly, saws buzz, and knives sever a side of beef and dwindle it down to the final knife- and-fork size portions. Barbers Wlien that inevitable time for a haircut comes the student can al- ways depend on our barbers for good service. And just like in any other barber shop, one can hear all the latest gossip, for the barber shop is like the crossroads of the seminary. Our student barbers also deserve credit for their good work and neat shop. Bookbinders Armed with glue, paper, thread, and heavy machinery, these able craftsmen bind periodicals and re- bind worn volumes for our library. Every W'ednesday and Saturday one may find them working in our well- equipped bookbindery. Although their labor is little noticed by many, the binders continue to live up to their motto, Ligo ut legas - I bind that you may read, Stage Crew just as a locomotive would be useless without an engineer, so too would a theater be useless without stage technicians. Although the work of this crew is not an impor- tant part in a seminarians life, yet it is a diversion and it provides the student with practical knowledge, which are necessary qualities in the making of a future leader of men. Student Maintenance Crew During recreation periods one may see the bended forms of sem- inarians at work. From time to time their hands have gripped tools ranging from shovels to tractors. The seminarian is a ready worker, because he does his task voluntar- ily, not out of necessity. He is a happy worker going to his task with mind, heart, and hands for the love of God. Student Printers Wliat is a play without a pro- gram and how could The Fiaielian and THE SkuLLcAP publish their issues during the year without sub- scription letters? The care of the student printers in fulfilling these and other similar duties throughout the year is easily forgotten. Never- theless, they are forging another link, with printers ink and type, in the success of endeavors at St. Fidelis. Chauffeurs Capably fulfilling the position of St. Fidelis chautfeurs seems to re- quire little more than a strong con- stitution. Locating items for stu- dents that are as varied as they are numerous, while helping deliver supplies to the seminary, is but a part of their duty. However, their satisfaction seems to indicate that their wide experience has amply repaid them with a vast knowledge of human nature. Vesonder, Bobola, Rapp, Banik, Pozzuoli, Harvey.
