During the students' prayers after Mass one petition rose daily, and individual prayers and sacri- fices multiplied in each students day. On the initial Saturday of each month many stu- dents gathered to recite the rosary for mise sionaries toiling in foreign fields. Raising funds for the missions occupied an important phase of Unit activities. Those who had time and energy to devote to work were as enthusiastic as Don Quixote. From pressing pants and shining shoes, to making Christmas tree ornaments and setting up pins, students earned nickels and dimes for Capuchin foreign and home missions. Following long hours of Latin, algebra or chemis- try, seminarians deserve recreation, but all relaxation does not result in a hand of canasta or a game on the gridiron. Despite the fact that cooperation is essential in any household, there are rich returns for all who invest their time in manual labor. In the bindery, barber shop, and kitchen, on the lawns, the campus and farm, squires learn to use their hands with the ease of artisans. From multi ra hin sta fe ro rams to rintinf' 5 ra stationery and business letters for The Fidelitm and SKULLCAP. student-printers command a busy project. They learn the methods of typesetting and proofread- ing within the confines of their little printing shop. Amid the melodies of a barbershop quartet or the chattering voices of jolly squires, two barbers applied a skillful touch in cutting hair. A few strides down the hall bookbinders spent their Wetlnesdziy and Sat- urday afternoons rebinding much-thumbed volumes from seminary and monastery libraries. Witli record production they put an artistic touch to their work with colorful bindings and covers. A typical outdoor crew was Father Bede's foresters. Cutting and transplanting trees, spreading reddog Drivers Heuler, Leitem, Haywood. Painters Stefun, Crites, Misulich. . . Able W01'km6'1l and raking leaves helped to beautify the seminary grove. Father Christian and his lawn crew tended to the shrubbery and lawns about the campus. Stage productions are indebted for their success in no mean way to the stage crew. Attractive scenery, lighting and sound effects indicated the presence of an efficient crew behind the scenes. The addition of new curtains and backdrops are positive signs of how well Father Christian and his crew operate backstage. The Sisters' crew who worked in the fruit cellar and the waste paper crew who carted waste paper to the incinerator, always worked with regularity. A job well done gives the workman an inner sense of satisfaction and joy. He feels that his hand becomes a part of the almighty Hand that made the tree he transplanted or the lawn he mowed. If personal benef fits failed to attract a seminarian to a pick or shovel, then the claims of duty did. If he has never worked hard himself, how will he be able to sympathize with the laborers who drop their hard-earned coins into the basket with a calloused hand? Seminarians know the way.
