Published by the Senior Class St Jwlmd Jiujk School JwJmjuL, 3odum Volume 10 “America, America, God shed His grace on thee. We, as members of Christ’s Mystical Body, citizens of America, and members of the senior class of St. Ferdinand High School, realize and appreciate the blessings God has bestowed on America, our school, and us. We are proud to be recognized as Americans. We bear the name of St. Ferdinand High School Crusaders with dignity. As we recall the joys and sorrows of the year gone by and record them in our annual, we reflect that all our endeavors were carried out in the name of God, country, and school. It is for this reason then that we, the graduating class of 1963, dedicate the 63 Crusader to God, country, and school. 2 . . School “MAN OF THE YEAR Distinguishing him for his outstanding work, TIME MAGAZINE bestowed the title “Man of the Year for 1962 on our Holy Father, Pope John XXIII. Truly fitting, this title signifies Pope John’s importance in the world of today. Our Holy Father’s love for his children can be seen in many ways, especially by his title, “The Servant of the Servants of God. ’ Through his encyclical, MATER ET MAGISTRA, Pope John is attempting to improve the social and economic conditions prevalent in the world today. Striving for unity, the Holy Father called the Second Vatican Council in 1962. In answer to his plea for prayers for the success of the Council, the students of St. Ferdinand High School gathered around the campus shrine of Our Lady of Fatima on the opening day of the Council, October 11, 1962, the feast of the Maternity of Our Lady, to recite the rosary. 4 GofU tU Page Administration....................5 Faculty...........................6 Activities........................9 Studies..........................27 Page Sports.........................35 Students......................45 School Life....................71 Advertisements................77 REV. The Catholic Students' Mission Crusade has many goals. The students must be Crusaders for Christ. As students in a Catholic high school we should have not only team spirit; but like Christ, we must be alive to the needs of others and of the world. Pope Pius XII tells us that to be mission - minded is a serious obligation of every Christian. We must think big! How can I make sure that I think and act like Christ? How can I help spread the gospel of Christ all over the globe? The C.S. M. C. helps us to be conscious of our responsibility to be missionaries through class projects, assemblies, sacrifices and prayers for the Kingdon of Christ. We will join with Christ, saying with Isaiah the Prophet, Lord, send me the strength to use my time and talents for Your cause. Father Schroering, M. M., a native of Jasper, Indiana, related his experiences of missionary work in Japan, School officers of the Mission Crusade -are Ernest Brames, President; Terry Olinger, Vice-President; Eugene Verkamp, Secretary; Susan Steltenpohl, Treasurer; and Father Hubert, Moderator. The Catholic Students' Mission Crusade, in its first year at St. Ferdinand High School, proved to be very successful with 100% enrollment in the Senior class, 93% in the Junior class, 70% of the Sophomores, and 46% of the Freshmen. Edwin Schilling points out to James Peters, Susanne Knust, and Caroline Toby what the mission-minded students have contributed to the Bishops' Relief Fund. G.A A ■■1 The fighting Crusaders' team spirit produced the best seasonal record since 1956, with 13 victories and 8 losses. Ed Pauckner's injury put out of play for five games and the sectional. His absence gave the other players the opportnuity to prove their ability to handle the ball by winning 3 of 5 in the remaining seasonal games. Throughout the season, fighting sharpshooter, Jim Ruhe, showed his ability to rebound and hit from the field. Ed Pauckner led the team in rebounding and points. His seasonal average was 16.8. Captain Gene Vaal and Co-Captain Jim Werne also contributed their fair share to the scoring column. 'Kecod 13 Wins — 8 Losses OPP.
