Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1957 volume:

S1N31N00 As the theme for our book, as also the theme for our lives, we have chosen the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. For in what nobler way can we spend ourselves than in adoration, thanksgiving, reparation, and petition, the four great ends of the Mass. In leafing through these pages, you will meet our parents, our teachers, and our fellow students with whom we have shared the priceless experiences that have taught us the true value of sacrifice. Upon our departure from St. Ferdinand High School, we, the graduates of 1957, are aware of our debt of gratitude to many people who have dedicated themselves to us during our childhood and adolescent years. Yet, among these, some few must rank first. Therefore, for their ever-endless labor, their unceasing love and sacrifice in providing us the opportunity of receiving a Catholic high school education and for the many other obligations they have fulfilled in our behalf, we sincerely and gratefully dedicate this Crusader to our beloved Mothers and Fathers. SISTER M. THOMAS, O.S Principal Health FATHER DAVID, O.S.B. Superintendent Sociology, Religion SISTER M. THERESE, O.S.B. Latin, English, Librarian SISTER MARY CARMIN, O.S.B. MARK LAGRANGE Mathematics, Coach, Driver Training REV. DONALD WALPOLE, O.S.B. Latin, English MR. CHARLES STEINER Science, Shop, Agriculture ! I LEFT TO RIGHT: David Schnieders, Sec- retary; Esther Begle, President;Norman Lue- ken. Treasurer; John Olinger, Vice-Presi- dent. Sister Mary Carmin has devoted a great deal of her time to the class of '57 as class sponsor and advisor of the yearbook. We are much indebted to her for her fine teaching, and we deeply appreciate all that she has done for us. -.o SENIORS ROBERT AUFFART Bob is a good-looking boy who seems to love mischief. He likes to get into a tough game and make it tougher. His main interests lie in agriculture and hunting. He plans to go into farming after graduation. ESTHER BEGLE Having devoted much time to study, Esther has always excelled as a student. She held the honored position of class president in her Freshman year, and was chosen for the same post as a Senior. With her abilities she will always make a fine leading citizen. TOM BACKER Don’t let the size of this fellow fool you. Though small in proportion, he is blessed with much talent and intelligence. Tom has been one of Mr. LaGrange’s prize math students. He plans to attend college and is sure to be a success in what- ever he ventures. The one making all the noise when the band was playing was none other than Rosie on the drums, though we all agree that she was quite apt at her job. She also proved her likeabliness among the students by the fact that she was one of the senior favorites in basketball crowning ceremonies. Teasing is her specialty; her victim is anyone close by, faculty members not excluded. ROSE ANN BECHER SENIORS JOE BOEGLIN Who is this? Why, it’s Joe Boeglin, one of the friendliest boys in school. Since he spends most of his time at a typewriter or at a bookkeeping project, it seems that he is destined for the business world. He intends to enter Indiana University next fall. VIRLEE BEGLE Virlee attracts the attention of all by her smiling dimples. Popularity seems to be her outstanding achievement. She was chosen as an attendant to the basketball queen and as Ferdinand High’s nominee for the queenship at the Home Show held at Jasper. She is undecided as to her future. JAMES BOLTE Give Jim a cornet and he’s gone. The rigid check he keeps on himself will help in later life. Garage work has been a valuable source of experience and income for him. Jim has his own orchestra and is, it seems, already on the road to success. PEGGY BETTAG Peggy is one of our “onlies” from Mariah Hill, as she and the Wirthwein twins are the first girl graduates from Mary, Help of Christians Parish. Her jolly and congenial disposition has made her well liked by the students. According to her present plans, she will enter business college next year. SENIORS WILFRED BRINKMAN Wilfred was a star player on the4 4Soup Bowl League” Champion team. Basketball seems to be his favorite pastime because he’s always playing it. His favorite classes are Shop and Agri- culture. Wilfred plans to leave for the army soon after graduation. ALBERT DILGER Small but mighty describes Albert to a “T.” He has always been known for his fun-loving nature and his class spirit. It looks as though he too will go into farming as he likes anything that involves agriculture. REBECCA DOUGLAS Becky has always been an outstanding student. As a Junior she won the 44Our American Heritage essay contest sponsored by the American Legion. Top honors were hers again in her Senior year when she was awarded the Betty Crocker Home- maker Pin. She daily greeted the students this past year in her role as cafeteria cashier. DENNIS DURCHOLZ Dennis, an all-around sportsman, will go down as one of Ferdinand’s Basketball Greats, as he broke three and set three individual scoring records this season. Known as “Turkey, he is a quiet, pleasant fellow who seems to enjoy farming as much as any sport. DAVID GREENWELL Although David just moved to Ferdinand this year from Chrisney, he is one of the most popular members of the class, especially among the girls. One of Mr. Steiner’s prize agriculture and shop students, David plans to go into farming after graduation. BONNIE FISCHER SENIORS Five foot two, eyes of blue is not entirely correct in Bonnie’s case for she is a mere five foot one. Though she finds herself to be the shortest member of the class, she manages to sur- pass her classmates in other respects. She is a “mirror of courtesy,” a lover of music and seems to have every popular song at her fingertips. KENNETH FISCHER Kenny is the boy who always has an answer to any question or statement not pertaining to school work. He was only a half- day student during his Senior year while spending the rest of the day working at home. Most probably the Army will claim him soon after graduation, or perhaps it would be better to say that he will claim the Army. Patty was elected Christmas Queen. This and her ready smile explain her popularity. She is a trombone player and a valuable band member. By entering nurse’s training, she intends to dedicate herself to the service of others. PATTY HAGEDORN SENIORS DAN HAUSER The tallest boy in school with probably the broadest grin is “Big Dan. He is one of the “biggest reasons for our basket- ball team’s great success. His basketball-playing ability has excited the interest of several colleges, which, in turn, have offered him scholarships. Dan, however, is still undecided as to his plans for the coming year. IMELDA HEDINGER Imelda is the girl who loves a friendly argument but, never- theless, has an art for getting along with others. She has already taken the examination for entering nurses training at St. Mary’s Hospital, Evansville; hence, there is no question as to her future plans. Her personality is such that she is well qualified for this calling BARBARA HELMING Barbara is the capable, ever-ready editor of the 57 Crusader. In the commercial field she has attained certificates of highest merit in typing and has also kept an excellent record in her bookkeeping class. There is no doubt as to her success for she is determined and full of zeal. LEE ROY HOFFMAN Lee Roy is an excellent Math student, having been the only one of the class who took solid Geometry. A friend of every- one, he is quite witty and has a grand sense of humor. At times he is a bit mischievous, but having good clean fun is his favorite pastime. GERALD HOLTZMAN SENIORS An earnest worker and a silent gentleman is Gerry. His future may well lie in the business field as he takes a great interest in bookkeeping. He is an ardent naturelover, likes hunting and has participated in many forestry and wildlife projects in the 4H. LEONA KITTEN Leona entered upon her Senior year with someone missing in her life. That someone was her twin brother Leander, who preferred the Navy to school life. However, she didn’t let his absence dull her spirits, for her smile and happy laughter are always seen and heard. A whizz at shorthand, she is certain to get the secretarial job for which she is looking. KENNETH JACOB Kenny is quite an astounding fellow. The customized ’48 Chevy he drives to school even’ day has a pair of foot-long tail pipe extentions and pep aplenty. Kenny has a good time in school and out. Being a future agriculturalist is his ambition. Nancy joined our class in her Junior year and with her friend- liness and pleasant personality was soon one of us. She especially enjoys being in the company of the twins, Rosa Lee and Vera Lee. As for studies, her typing class, with its 10- minute timings, is her worst headache--the reason--her type- writer is the old-fashioned type that makes SO many mistakes. NANCY KEMPF SENIORS RICHARD LEE SANDRA LEINENBACH Sandy, as she is known by all her schoolmates, can-not be overlooked. Her 52 Dodge, “Sadie,” parked at a slant, will always be remembered as one of the familiar sights at the high schooL As a Sophomore, Sandy held two offices; namely, that of class treasurer and President of the Marylike Homemakers Club. Richard is a very active member of the class. Besides being student-manager of both the basketball and baseball team, he sings in the glee club and also any other time he has a chance. Dick’s future is rather uncertain. NORMAN LUEKEN Nothing is too much of a favor to ask of this young man. It can readily be understood why he’s everyone's friend. As a sax- ophone player he has won six awards in music competition. Fellows like Norman are few and far between. PAUL MEHLING Paul is the witty fellow in our class. General knowledge is where he shines, but he is also interested in mechanics. Everyone agrees that his varied talents and his ability to get along with people are sure to bring him success. JOHN OLINGER SENIORS Being chosen a class officer for the past three years shows how John’s classmates feel about him. He was a member of the starting five on the Crusader basketball team and was also the star pitcher on the baseball team. A straight A student, John plans to go to college next year. MARY ANN OSER This little lassie is known by her many friends as ‘'Annie. As a member of the pep club and in any other activity she showed her loyal spirit. She was a faithful member of the yearbook staff and put forth earnest effort--such as should prove her a valuable member of society. f 3 I BERNARD PUND Though not a farmer by birth, Bernard is greatly interested in agriculture and in raising poultry. He is one of the initial members of the boys’ glee club and also sings in the men’s choir of the parish. He intends to leave for the Army almost immediately after graduation. ANNA MARIE RAHMAN When looking for this tall dark-headed young lady, one can usually find her in the library, indulging in her favorite pas- time; namely, reading. She is noted for her smile and the “hi” she has for everyone. Other than her reading interests, she enjoys the lady-like art of baking. SENIORS PATRICK RECKER Pat is usually kept busy on his dad’s turkey farm. For a while he sported a yellow Plymouth that all of a sudden converted to a nice-looking blue and white Dodge. What happened? Only the poor yellow Plymouth knows. He was a part-time Senior, leaving school at noon for work. Dennis is Jake’s constant companion and fellow mischief maker. He is very quiet and doesn’t have the bad habit of talking in his sleep; therefore, he doesn’t have much to say in class. Farming is what he will probably take up after graduation. EDWARD RUHE If anyone wished to find Eddie, he would look for the boy with the bandages. Purely by accident, he and the other two musketeers, Kenny and Dennis, accompanied by Kenny’s auto- mobile, just missed the bridge but hit the ditch. He’s a regular fellow who helped make our high school days jolly ones. DENNIS SCHAEFFER This young gentleman is the pride and joy of our school glee club, having sung a solo at the state music contest. He is a good worker and is often called on to do various odd jobs. Girls are his main interest in life and teasing them is his favorite pastime. CLARA MAE SCHIPP SENIORS Reigning as Basketball Queen was an honor bestowed upon Clara Mae in her Senior year. She was St. Ferdinand High’s re- presentative in the Daughters of the Revolution contest. She is a member of the foursome, consisting of Barbara, Ann, Sandy and herself. Her plans are to enter St. Mary’s School of Nursing at Evansville in the fall. David schnieders If you want to get David’s attention, just start talking about cars since motors and mechanics are his main interests. How- ever, he enjoys other activities as he was an initial member of St. Ferdinand High Boys’ Glee Club. As a Senior he held the office of class secretary. LINDA STECZYK If silence speaks louder than words, this little lady must speak worlds, for she is always seen but never heard. When assistance is needed at any time or at any place, Linda is ready to lend a helping hand. There is one strange thing about her, however-- her last name--no one knows how to pronounce it and is still less able to spell it. Kathleen tellman Kathy’s talent lies in the music department, as she plays not only the piano but also the bell lyre and the field drums. Dancing is the highlight of her leisure moments. Her magnetic giggle is sure to attract attention and has helped her form a long line of friends. ROSA LEE WIRTHWEIN Which one is this? It must be Rosa Lee because Vera Lee follows. Yes, she is one of our gay but confusing little twins. When asked about her favorite subject, she discovers she has none; when asked about a particular hobby, she says she doesn't have one; when asked about her future, she is unde- cided. Hence, she still leaves us in confusion. VERA LEE WIRTHWEIN Yes, this is the other half of our twin set. Being the older of the two, it seems that Vera Lee is always looking after her younger sister. Neatness holds first place with her. She likes to dance and sew and is good at both. SENIOR SENT TO INDIANAPOLIS John Olinger represented St. Ferdinand High in his role as Page at the State House in late winter. One senior boy from every high school in Dubois County was granted the same privilege. John was selected by the faculty to take part in this interesting day's program. Dennis Turk Durcholz capped a most spectacular season as one of Ferdinand’s outstanding basketball athletes. In the past season he shattered almost every record of the school. He started the upward climb during the English game on Feb- ruary 8th when he set a new scoring record for the Ferdinand gym, as well as a new individual mark for a Ferdinand play- er, by pouring in 34 points. By the end of the sectional he had bested a one-season record by 47 points, having a total of 378.
