The members of the board have done a very fine job in helping make our unit system a success. The unit system of the St. Elmo Community has been in existence two years, having been organized in july, 1949. lt is composed of schools in Avena, XVheat- land, and Louden Townships, as Well as the St. Elmo Grade and High Schools. During regular meetings, at which they discuss the problems of the unit, the board meets the educational needs of the young people of this community. By increasing the transportation facilities and staff personnel it has been possible to give boys and girls the advan- tages of hot lunches and the medical services of the county health and school authorities. XVe find that the Seniors have readily taken part in numerous activities, such as basketball, football, track, band and dramatics. Marshall Blankenship was chosen as the Student Council President. The Homecoming Queen was chosen from the Senior Class in the personage of Miss Wanda Garrett. Among the Seniors those ranking high scholastically are: Marshall Blankenship, Mary Alice Calhoon, Erna Fae Dunbar, Bobby Feezel, Mary Lou Fristoe, Nancy Gillespie, Mildred Simpkins, and Mickey Thrasher. We have had fun in our high school years, and, even though we look forward to graduation, we hate to see our high school days end. They wore the usual forlorn look common to all fresh- men. Very much bewildered, they wished they were back where they enjoyed the good old days -grade school. It didn't take them long to adjust themselves. They are now acting very grown-up. The members of the class are very busy representing their class in the various cluhs and organizations around school. They show much promise in having original ideas, for their float won third place in the Homecoming of '5O. The class also can be very industrious. Walter Roll made straight A's for the first semester. Others on the honor roll for the first semester are: Harold Brady, Don Campbell, Phyllis Engeljohn, Don Fairchild, VVallace Fletcher, Kenneth Gillespie, Patsy Rogers, Rita Niemeyer, Barbara Sicldens, Erma Sproat, Galen Underwood and Leonard Weidner. Anticipat- ing the pleasure of a completed Elmon- ian in May lightened the job of ser-uring enough funds for the publication. Plan- ning the 1951 Elmonian, taking and mounting pictures, typing copy, and so- liciting advertising and yearbook sales, may have taken hours of time and hard physical labor. Nevertheless. there is fun and enjoyment in publishing a yearbook. The 1951 Elmonian editor-in-chief is Bobby Feezel, the assistant editor for the 1951 Elmonian is Hobart Landreth. The success of this Elmonian is not only due to the Elmonian Staff and Miss Krueger, but also to the co-operation of Mr. Solze, photographer, students, facul- ty, and advertisers. 5 1 ia 'izr ACTIVITIES, ADVERTISING, ART, AND SUBSCRIPTIONS First row: Eyyonne Buzzard, Beverly Gire, Dorothy Stolte, Nola Boesch, Barbara Jenkins. Our president, Marshall Blankenship, instituted a Student Cov- ernment Day with the members of the Student council acting as teachers on November 20, 1950. To earn funds for sending delegates to the state convention of student councils, our council produced three one-act plays under thc supervision of Miss Ayers and student directors VVanda Garrett and Hobart Landreth. The Council organized the Homecoming Day program, distributed the concessions at football and basketball games to the classes and organizations, planned and presided at assemblies, and welcomed the freshmen to high school at the all-school party in September. This means you can find a girl behind the librar- ianis desk any time you need someone to assist you in finding a book or checking it in or out. These girls. like the office girls, are also the students' favorite helpers because they assist students to find all kinds of excel- lent material and bright ideas for the many themes which must be written. Besides check- ing in and out books, they see that books are in their proper places on the shelves, and find any missing or misplaced books. These girls, under the direction of Nliss Ayers. are receiv- ing beneficial and profitable training. l4f3l OFFICE GIRLS This year six girls were given the oppor- tunity to learn about office procedure under the direction of the office secretary, Miss Waring. These girls are considered favorite helpers by all because of their various duties such as: ringing the bell at the end of the period, writing out tardy and excuse slips, dismissing certain classes early for lunch, an- swering the telephone, counting meal tickets and lunch money, typing, filing, and various other tasks. Each girl has certain duties which she performs daily besides helping with the general office work. She is able to gain much knowledge and experience through this train- lllg.
