In birth through Baptism, the grace of Truth surges gently through the immortal soul of man making it everlastingly one with the Way that is Christ, suffering then glorious, inseparably uniting the Life and this infant member of His Mystical Body. To Thee, O Lord of the Universe, Who compassionately conceived of eternal coalition with Thy creatures, we, the graduates of Nine- teen Hundred and Forty-Four, humbly dedicate the pages between these covers, and moreover, our entire lives. We beseech Thee, jesus, to ever warm the hearts of Elizabethans in the lambent flames of Thy Sacred Heart, that thus sheltered in the healing Wound of Thy Loving Heart we may one day achieve complete realization of Thy Divine Benevolencei Unworthy though we know our- selves to be, we petition from Thy Hands, pierced with rubies of lovexfor us, the merciful forgiveness which is our solitary support as we falteringly strive to walk in Thy Footsteps leading to the Divine Presence. In our four years at St. Elizabeth Academy, we have received from Your Hands the triply strong unity with the Way-with the Truth-with the Life which we cherish most intimately, confident that in the years to come we will be supported by this oneness and go onward and upward until the summit is attained and we may adore Thee face to face Who has lived in us, and Whom we, as travelers in life, have diligently striven to emulate. gtzcciuilty Throughout the year FATHER CYPRIAN EMANUEI., O.F.M., religion instructor and chaplain, has won the admiration and respect of the entire student body by his unlimited source of knowledge and fine sense of humor. If you .ring you will be happy, is the motto of DOM ERMIN VITRY, O.S.B., choral director of the Academy. He has given to the members of his chorus invaluable lessons in musical appreciation which they will carry with them thsough their lives. A shining example to every one of the Academy students is the quiet, charming MOTHER M. WILHELMINE. Her ways and manner are an inspiration to every Elizabethan. Her words of experience, too, are treasured as precious embroidery in the tapestry of life. SISTER PRAXEDES, the directress, is a kind friend, a solicitous guide and a wise counselor. In a word, Sister is a real mother to all, sharing the difficulties and multiplying the joys of upper and lower classmen alike. A knowledge of literature makes a person live more fully, a deep and sincere appreciation of the works of the great masters intensifies the cultural outlook of life and thus makes for abiding happiness. Such is SISTER AQUINA'S message as she smilingly goes from one class to the other showing her students how much pleasure and profit can be derived from the world of books. Coaching her famous debate team, teaching Cicero and Virgil, preparing students for oratorical contests, and presiding over the senior home room must be what keeps SISTER VENANTIA so busy, gay and happy. If any student has a puzzling English sentence or a particularly confusing history date, SISTER CHRYSOLOGA has the answer. For her junior classes Sister links American literature and American history together in a most interesting fashion. The literary works of the English authors ranging from Chaucer to Chesterton are interestingly analyzed by SISTER MARY LOUIS. She keeps the freshmen wide-eyed as she explains the fundamentals of the Lingua Latina and the sophomores tense as they read of the exploits of Caesar. Despite her untiring effort on behalf of the Tb1wingia1z, Sister always has a bright smile and cheerful word for everyone. ZKCIO-3 T ZKCI 'l' 30-2. Perhaps this looks a bit complicated to you, but SISTER MARY BERNARD teaches this, and many more like it to her senior chemistry class. Sister also has a collection of the best recipes which she teaches to the future homemakers of her home economics class. The great Greek gods, the Roman heroes, and the early pioneers all come to life as SISTER LOYOLA teaches World History to the sophomores. Sister also has a group of freshmen convinced that the Latin language is by no means a dead one. Whether it be the structure of the amoeba or paramecium, the movement of the planets or the best way to keep your pet goldfish happy, SISTER MARY LEONARDUWHI solve your problem in1either her biologyor general science classes. , .fy ---'fat I I ff, .nf mi f V4.4 I' ff! fl 'K -wtf A- ---!..'- . ff c. .riff ,fx ' For the latest war news or a solution to any of the many post war problems drop in some day on SISTER SOLANA'S American Problems Class. Under Sisters able direction these future leaders of the nation are learning how to better solve the perplexing questions of our great democracy. Page Eight 'J f?f76Ez75?f gttctaltgy Just zz zlob of red here and a little yellow there. These are the words of a real artist-SISTER CLEOPI-IA. Besides giving her pupils a finer appreciation of art and beauty Sister donates much time and contributes many skillful ideas toward making our boys over there happy through her contributions to the Red Cross. Latin and French are SISTER MARY THERESE'S specialties. With characteristic calm she unravels the intricacies of Latin word order and con- structionsg With genuine good cheer, the enunciation and pronunciation of French phraseology. SISTER REMIGIA is famous for her Do, Re, Me, Fas. There is music in her voice and step. Those lilting melodies hummed by members of the chorus and the selections rendered by her music pupils are fine examples of Sister's untiring efforts to make this a more musical world. SISTER AMANDA guides the faltering steps of the little third and fourth graders along the troublesome paths of reading, 'riting and 'rithmeticf' SISTER AGNES MARIE gladly ministers to the tiniest need and want of the junior division of resident students. . Under what better care and guidance could the tiny kindergarten tots be placed than that of gentle and kind SISTER BERENICE? She is like another guardian angel to them. From the smallest child to the senior class Sister is loved and respected. - There are many students who look back through the years and remember dear SISTER GREGORY who taught them their A, B, Cs, their numbers, and the unforgettable stories of the Christ Child. Sister Gregory teaches them to her little first and second grade pupils with as much enthusiasm and sincerity as she did years ago. History, geography, arithmetic, and those countless other things which puzzle fifth and sixth graders are in the capable hands of SISTER ALEXIA. Sister has disclosed the-secret of happiness to her pupils- Keep busy. Always interested and interesting SISTER MARY DOLORES is a guiding and helping hand to the seventh and eighth grade girls, preparing them for their great day-entrance into high school. , Toll-house cookies, cherry pies and other more practical dishes are the result of SISTER I.UCIA'S cooking hints. SISTER JOHANNA unhesitatingly straightens the rugged paths of knowledge for grade school pupils, giving a bit of advice here and a helping hand there. Above the clickety-clack of the typewriters, and the rapid motion of pencils can be heard the soft calm voice of MRS. CLARK HARDY, instructor in the commercial department. Her experience and ability are a great asset in preparing the students for the business world. To eager young students from freshman to senior classes MISS MARGUERITE BREWER has laid a firm foundation in dramatic art. Her experience and talent have been largely the cause of the Acaderny's success in both stage productions and oratorical contests. The name of MISS LORETTA RAPP has been linked with sports and gymnastics at the Academy for the past year and a half. Since Miss Rapp believes that sound bodies make for good citizenship, she endeavors to make her class and extra-curricular activities intensive periods of real physical training. As We leave the Academy, We re- affirm the presence in our hearts of the Way, humbly thankful for the great gift of Divine Companion- ship through life. Throughout the years We have been conscious of the Light- from Within ever guid- ing us. But never has this knowl- edge held more promise of eternal love than it does as We stand in the dawn of our tomorrow most inti- mately united With Christ, the Way. O YOU EVER dream? I seldom do, but last night I had a magnificent dream. Brick Bradford took me into his Time Top and sent me ten years ahead of the rest of the world. When I arrived in New York, I noticed that the world hadn't changed much, except for taller buildings. Believing that this would be the quickest way to learn about America-1954, I bought the most popular Woman's Magazine and soon became engrossed in its contents. I was greeted on the cover by the familiar face of Jean Westhus, sketched in 'a pretty red hat by the famous artist, Mary Jean Davison. I soon discovered that this excellent publication is ably edited by Mary Ann I.aBarge, the envy of all women journalists. Some interesting news, compiled by the Society Editor, Pat Webb, awaited my eye as I turned the pages. Luella Forrest entertained last week-end with another of her famous house parties. Among her guests was the brilliant novelist, Pat Thomas, author of Three Little Smear. This recent publication received orchids from the distinguished literary critic, Ruth Melville. Miss Thomas revealed that when the book is filmed, the leading characters will be portrayed by Adele Heun, Marian Maloney, and the winner of last yeat's Academy Award, jane Boland. The party was also attended by Ioan Gardner, the eminent philanthropist, who earned her millions by the discovery of the ninety-eighth element. Miss Gardner has just founded a new all-charity hospital which was designed by the famous architectural trio: Krawinkel, Kremer and Kunz. Incidentally, the chief-of-staff of the new hospital is the nationally known Finces Lambert, M.D. The head nurse is Josephine Ba- - ix - ralle, and the dietetics department is under the supervision I' I ,l X of Marcella Falvey. Miss Virginia Bogy made her first Z-N GQUUA ,X public appearance, at the party, since her return from ' 1 A ' Z, Hollywood with her entire ballet company where she has X just completed the technicolor musical The Stars Ap- X plaudf' Among other guests were Vourdonna Fricke, A Xfe,-.Q Shirley Spaeth, Loretto Debrecht and Jeanne Neudeck, the '14 famous Four Queens of Bridge, closely rivalling the Four Aces. Audrey Thaman, recently elected Woman of the Year by all the leading magazines and newspapers of the nation, dropped in for a few moments. Mary jane Burrafato and Gloria Leggio, co-owners of the Ideal Show Company, attended with their chief designer, La Verne Dill. Elaine Fitzgerald and June Gregory, heads of the most exclusive dramatics school in New York, were also among the guests. I eagerly turned the page looking for more such news, but alas! instead of society news, I found gossip. The Goffip or Who? Doing What Where column is edited by Bette Ann Phelan. and Phylis Sherer. Their motto is: If you want to get all the news you can, just snoop with Puddy and Bette Ann. Accordingly, I snooped, and was glad I did, for many surprising facts were black on white before me. Page Twenty-Seven The noted linguist, Irene Roth has complemented her brilliant career by becoming a lay missioner, teaching Greek in Ethiopia. ' Miss Dolores Hussers was crowned Queen of the Roller Festival last night before 25,000 spectators, Miss Hussers will now tour the country as the star of the Roller Revue. The incomparable Catherine Wendt, the first woman to circle the globe in less than a minute, is resting at her home in St. Louis, catching up on her fan mail. Sister Mary Helen, formerly Mary Ann Bodlovic, has received her Ph.D. in music. Shirley Fischer is now instructor of Physical Education at St. Mary's, Notre Dame. joan Dohle and Eleanor Amerski, noted Red Cross workers, have opened a new Center in Chicagois Soutii Side. Under Secretary of State, jean Burkert, was influential in the recent appointment of Dolores Bruegger, talented member- of the Diplomatic Corps, as the Ambassador to Peru. Anita Carton and Rosemary Howe are Foreign Corre- spondents to Russia and China, respectively. What would the Associated Press do without them! Q f- The successful journalist Dorothy Perkins is devoting all her time to rewriting the classic Silar Nlrzmer. Mary Helen Voges and Cecilia Tappel, noted photographers, are enjoying a visit at Virginia Werner's ranch. They are endeavoring to complete their series of pictures of Famous Dude Ranches. Senator Mary Catherine Voss, and Congresswoman Lenore Wegner rejoiced today when their brilliant oratory produced results in the passing of the Voss-Wegener Bill. Next on the list was the Entertainment Page. I was actually passing it up when I noticed a familiar name. Examining the page more closely, this is what I found: The newest hit on records is Margaret Engeris Pan- try Polka, sung by the Held, Dobberstein, Bauer trio. Playing for the fifty-second week on Broadway is the Nie- N hoff-Brackmann comedy, School Days, starring Rosemary Lundergan and Bette Schlattman. The famous piano-violin A team of Alita Vogt and Susan Quinn has consenteduto play a return engagement at Carnaegi Hall next week, but their manager, Anne Murray, reveals that no more tickets are available. The lovely voice of Rita Partsch may be Page Twenty-Eight heard every Sunday evening on the Hour of Charm program. Rita sings with the All-Girl Orchestra. Elaine Reifeiss's daily radio program, Pots, Pans, and Leftoversj' was voted the most popular morning program on the air. Some attribute this success to the programs silver-tongued announcer, Audrey jacob. Is the audience interested in cooking or commercials? The F well-known promoter, Mildred Petry, will sponsor Rose- H' ' mary Hendel on a lecture tour throughout the country. Miss Hendel has spent much time in research and will '::. , i' speak on the important subject, The Growth of Ultra- ,,55E55fi,5ff11 micro Organisms on a Gelatenous Media. Mary Helen fi Cowan's soft voice is heard over the radio each evening :i3iiE iiiii::i' i in a summar f h f f CL -P y o t e news or C.B.S. wr' The Fashion Page, which I had been looking for, f ff finally appeared. This page showed signs of Harriet Schlattman's good taste, for she is the fashion editor. Among the style suggestions, I discovered the following news-items. The exclusive Meyer and Meier Dress Shoppe announces the arrival of a complete new stock of Florence Drabant originals. Viola Heine has received the national beau- tician's award for creating the most original coiffure. Rosemary Nordmann and Mary Pandolfo are making history with their revolutionary ideas in the field of interior decorating. Peggy Sisco, president of the New York Designers Club, announced today that the votes of the members have been tabulated and Dolores Rogles has been unanif mously chosen the best dressed woman of 1954. Miss Rogles attributes her success to her private seamstress, Rosemary Rottler. The once unrivaled creations of Lily Dasche have been surpassed by the ultra-fashionable chapeaux designed by Bettye Maze. As the vision grew faintincl consciousness returned to me, the open magazine remained in my hand, a testimonial that every S.E.A.NIOR of '44 is destined to become a successful woman of the world. This knowledge has ever been the unquenchable torch of hope penetrating the darkness fostered by the sordid chaos of worldliness. Within the solitude of the Academy Chapel, each Elizabethan pauses to adore the Giver of Light that she may receive into herself the tranquil peace of His Love, that shielded by the armor of faith she may accomplish her mission in life-save her immortal soul. During the four years of high school, students come to 'recognize the Sodality as an important factor in their spiritual development. The activities sponsored by the Sodality throughout the year are many and varied. A party was given to raise funds with which to buy pamphlets for chaplains. A spiritual program in honor of Mary was a tribute to the Immaculate Conception. Our Blessed Mother was crowned Queen of Peace at another inspiring festivity. The highlight of the year was the annual crowning of the Blessed Virgin as Queen of May. Virginia Bogy and Pat Webb were maids of honor in the May Crowning on World Sodality Day. The officers who succeeded in making the year such a successfully active one are: Irene Roth, prefectg Alita Vogt, vice-prefectg Barbara Ann Schneider, secretaryg and the following committee chairmen: Mary Ann LaBarge, Apostolic Committeeg Pat Webb, Parish Committeeg Nellene Zeis, Our Lady's Committeeg Mary Ann Seliga, Eucharistic Committeeg Virginia Bogy and Pat Mungenast, Social Life Committeeg Jane Boland, Publicity Committeeg Joan Dohle, Catholic Literature Committee. ONTRIBUTING to the spiritual needs of its members through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was the aim of the junior Sodality this year. In consideration of this the monthly Soclality Mass and Communion and the weekly Communion of Reparation to the Sacred Heart was begun and is' to be carried on by all future Junior Sodalists. A Variety Sweet Sale was sponsored to buy pamphlets for servicemen. The books were distributed through Reverend J. H. Huels, a naval chaplain. The Sodality has adopted Father Huels and will continue to send him rosaries, prayerbooks, pamphlets, anything he feels is necessary for the spiritual benefit of the men in his care. The Sodality also sent pocket games and hangers to the junior Red Cross for the recreation and comfort of the servicemen. The junior Sodality officers of 1945-44 were: Mary Ann Krupp, prefectg Mary Lee Byrnes, vice-prefectg Joan Elzer, secretaryg Jeanetta Sarkis, chairman of Our Lady's Comrnitteeg Mary Jane Beetz heads the Apostolic Committeeg Joan Eschmann, the Catholic Literature Committeeg Pat Rooney, the Eucharistic Committeeg Lucille Kluba, the Parish Committeeg and Marjorie Eyermann, the Social Committee. During the current year textbooks were printed by hand in large letters for the sight-conservation class at St. Alphonsus School. Q As in preceding years, postage stamps and Christmas cards were collected for use in mission centers. A number of Legionaries offered volunteer work at Desloge Hospital and others worked in the record room at St. Mary's Hospital. Entertainment was provided weekly for the shut-ins at St. Maryls Hospital and Infirmary. Scattering sunshine has always been the ambition of Legionaries and the Pediatric Division of these hospitals is the cause of their joy and a stimulus to good. Acting as attendant aides invited the time and attention of another group of Academy students. These girls prepare linen, make beds, per- form odd tasks, run errands to various departments, renew the thermos bottles, feed helpless patients and remove trays. Variety in hospital routine work is found by the young ladies who operate the elevator several nights a week. Be the service, what it may, the hospital 'volunteer corps, feels amply compensated for its efforts in the thought that they are trying to live for others. Various entertainment is provided on these occasions but the gala day comes 'jes' before Christrnus'. On December 25, approximately 35 Elizabethans were messengers of Christmas cheer. The little shut-ins, temporarily forgetting their ills, were taken into fairyland as a number of girls dressed in Brownie suits entered the hospital Ward followed by Mrs. Santa Claus and Mother Goose with all her children. Santa opened his proverbial pack and distributed his precious treasures. Leaving the hospital each and every Elizabethan felt that she had brought a Christmas gift to the Christ Child for He Himself said, What you do to the least of My brethren, you do unto Me. Second place was awarded S. E. A. when in the final analysis it was discovered that Elizabethans lacked one-half point of capturing highest laurels. In the Academy gymnasium on Friday evening, April 14, as Dom Vitry struck his first chord on the piano, the stage curtain slowly opened on the first act of Iolamfbe, a light musical comedy by Gilbert and Sulli- van. The first scene took place on an Arcadian landscape where a group of fairies dressed in light blue formals was gathered. Their leader, Iolanthe, was banished for having married a mortal. After the fairies pleaded for twenty-five years for Iolanthe's recall, the queen consented. Iolanthe then confessed she had a son, Strephon, who was engaged to Phyllis, a ward in chancery. The Lord Chancellor wanted Phyllis to marry one of the Lord Peers but she refused and revealed her love for Strephon. Phyllis not knowing Strephon's mother was a fairy saw him conversing with her and accused him of loving another. Thus the curtain fell on the first act leaving Strephon in bewilderment. The second act was in a Palace Yard in Westminster. In this act lolanthe confessed to the Lord Chancellor that she was his Wife which caused him to consent to Strephon's marrying Phyllis. Although this was the first time such a project was undertaken by the Choral Club, it proved to be a success due to the untiring efforts of Dom Vitry, director of the musical score, and Miss Marguerite Brewer, director of the dramatic presentation. Six Maids of Honor, the Misses Pat Thomas, Virginia Bogy, Pat Webb, Elaine Fitzgerald, Lenore Wegener, and Peggy Sisco, all officers of the club, opened the Coronation ceremony by marching slowly up the center of the gymnasium to the charming melody of a Strauss waltz. Formal dresses and sweet nose-gays added to the attractiveness of the crowning. Miss Anita Pellegreni, carrying the crown of red and white carnations, preceded the Queen-to-Bef' Miss jean Burkert, senior. Two pages, attired in black velvet, completed the cortege. When the court had assembled on the stage, surrounding the throne, Miss Pat Thomas placed the wreath on Miss Burkert's head proclaiming her Queen of Hearts, and wishing her a glorious reign. The proceeds of the party were donated to the Chapel Fund for Marys shrine. Although the girls had crowned one of their own, they dedicated the ceremony to Mary, heaven's queen. Page Sixty-Four Home Economics EAL PLANNING is fun!-Yes, even with rationing confusing and baffling many housewives, the Home Economic students find joy in pursuing interests in the culinary art from canning, to baking. The Elizabethans perfect their ability to prepare and season foods which would appeal to the delicate taste of a connoisseur. The class entertained the lay members of the faculty at luncheon and were hostesses at the tea given in connection with the Fashion Show. The young ladies had as their guests on another occasion the debators and orators to whom they served a delicious luncheon.
