ABOUT THE OPERA IOLANTHE was first performed on November 23, 1882, in both London and New York, in London running for 398 performances. lt was the first opera to open in the newly built Savoy Theatre and in celebration of the fact that the theatre was the first in London to be lit entirely by electricity, the fairies had electric lights in their hair and at the tips of their wands. Recently the Doyly Carte Opera Co, produced a sold out run of IOLANTHE at the Lin- coln Center in Washington D.C. during the Summer ol' 1978. Lovers of light opera will recognize the characteristic Gilbert and Sullivan features throu bout IOLANTHE. The gentle satire fthis time directed at the House of Lordsj, humor- ous dialogue, the ingenious rhyming of Gilbert's verse ftake note of the Lord Chancellor's Night Song l and the unexpected twist ending, when Fairies join nobility while their Queen is content to become plain Mrs. Willis . . The charm of the music lies, as in all the Savoy Operas, in its appropriateness to whatever mood the libretto requires. There are several examples of musical parody in IOLANTHE, With the entry of the Peers, Sullivan parodies the triumphal marches of Grand Opera Ito write Grand Opera was an ambition of Sullivan's encouraged by Queen Victoriaj. The Guardsman's song incorporates the fa la-la refrain more commonly found in maclrigals, while Mountararafs song When Britian Ruled the Waves is reminiscent of patriotic drawing-room ballads of the period.
