.awfu- THE TOWER ST. EDWARDS UNIVERSITY 3001 s. CONGRESS AUSTIN, TEXAS ROBERT L. MCDANIEL EDITOR RICK WILLIAMS ADVISOR This year's TOWER is dedicated to those who have given more than they were expected to give to this university. I cannot possibly list all these people, but they know, as do so many others, who they are. There are three men among these who deserve special recognition and this book is dedicated especially to them. These men have given all they possibly could to everyone they encountered on our campus, from president to janitor, from student to visitor. These men are Father William Brady, Ed Norris, and Ed- ward Mangum. To them our grati- tude is extendedg to them a special place in our memories and hearts. As the traveller drives, hikes, or flies into Austin from almost any direction he sees the Main Building of St. Edward's dominating the Austin skyline. Here it has stood since 1903, having had two predecessors which were destroyed by fire and tornado. The ever presence of a Main Building on the hill has come to symbolize the unflagging persis- tence by which St. Edward's has survived. As the University has survived natural disasters, so also has it survived two world wars, a depression, recessions, and an energy crisis. Throughout this time it has given birth to and maintained many traditions, not the least of which is excellence in education. This most important of all college traditions is very much alive at St. Edward7s today and serves as a link to the past and a bridge to the future. Ab '1-they l i f MN Y ttttt ty' One ofthe most obvious ways the tradition of education works itself out is in encouraging another important S. E. U. tradition, that of Christian involvement among students. Two student communities on campus, the Oblates of Mary Immaculate and The Center for Creative Ministly, help participants integrate the Christian experience with their education and plan their futures accordingly. The Brothers of Holy Cross, Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and Campus Ministry all work to preserve the educational and Christian traditions at the University, but it is through the students that they are carried out. Only through the student at St. Edward's can these traditions be insured survival. Through participation in the classroom, in the laboratory, and around campus an atmosphere is created by students by which they grow as Christians, citizens, and individuals. The 1978-79 student body has not failed in this purpose. Students are gaining knowledge and experience as well as representing S. E. U. in internships on and off campus. Various minorities have organized to increase awareness oftheir presence to lmoth administration and students. l l l I r I 13 , .-.c , -'L-.4 .. TV x Y ' ' V z cg' -X x Pgf ..'-f - -3 J.- f ... Though their suggestions were generally ignored, they nevertheless made it clear that St. Ed's students will not unquestioningly accept directives from the offices ofthe administration. 5 , t -wifi So as the Main Building still dominates the view of Austin, so do time honored traditions prevail at St. Edward's University. They are not musty, meaningless traditions, but are being kept vitally alive and relevant for the students, for the future. Housed on the third floor ol' Andre Hall, the center has a three-fold purpose: the es- tablishment ofa Christian community, the study of ministry, and the development of volunteer services within the local area. The community began with eight mem- bers the first semester and increased to eleven members by the second semester. Besides maintaining the regular functions ofthe house, including cooking and clean- ing, the members commit themselves to an on-going community prayer life along with times for private prayer. The Center is ecumenical, therefore allows a variety of 5 O spiritualities and religions to come together as a Christian blend of worship. In order to enhance this study, the Center provides a weekly forum that invites peo- ple from around the country to share various aspects of service. Throughout the year, 27 speakers have shared ideas on topics ranging from scripture to ritual, from prison reform to hunger, and from specific organizations to national con- cerns. These weekly forums entitled liv- ing room sessionsw have provided an on- going educational setting not only for the Center's community but also for the general university and local community. Each member has performed volunteer work and services within the local com- munity. Community members have pro- vided educational experiences in religious education programs, bible study pro- grams, health care services, retreat pro- grams, and advocacy roles for the elderly, women issues, and amnesty programs. Dedicated to the belief that all people are called to serve others, the Center is one of the more unique college programs in the country that provides an opportunity for individuals to discern what gift they have to share with others. It is the hope of the Center that after experiencing this pro- gram of prayer, study, and action, the members will continue this service after college. Spirits were high in the early going, but the team stumbled to a 6-21 season record. Despite the poor record, the players never lost pride. The season was ended on a winning note, a 98-92 victory over cross-town rival Huston-Tillotson. Two months after the season's finale, Starzecki announced his resignation. The 1979 TOWER salutes graduating seniors Steve Jaska, Harold Kindred, ,lim Littleton, and Allen Zaiontz. Zaiontz was the Big State Conference scoring champion, averaging 21 points per game, and a unanimous Big State Conference First Team selection. Chris Ryan Dwight Luckett :X if-f l l Q l '.. -. . The 1979 baseball team compiled a 35-18 record, breaking several records in the process. In addition to most wins, the hilltoppers also captured new records for doubles 1811, homeruns 1301, sacrifices 1501, runs 13561, runs batted in 13561, walks 12801, complete games 1271, innings pitched 13551, and lowest pitching earned run average 13251. Several individual on e-year career records were also re-writ- 1611. Coach John Knorras hilltoppers filed an even 6-6 conference winfloss record, with the difference between a fourth place standing and a conference championship resting on the wings of one run ball games that went the wrong way. Though this year's squad will return an equally potent and powerful conference contender the likes of seniors and the names that were so prevalent in S. E. U. baseball will sorely be missed. To these toppers, people like Kenny Goode, Leo Lindeman, Marty Massey, Steve Drury, David Luczkowski, and Ernie Saldivar, players who occupied the batter's box with commanding authority, we wish you well and miss your bats. Senior pitchers Rick Butcher and the sensational two-four, James Ellison will not only be missed but remembered for their outstanding perfor- mances on the mound. ABOUT THE OPERA IOLANTHE was first performed on November 23, 1882, in both London and New York, in London running for 398 performances. lt was the first opera to open in the newly built Savoy Theatre and in celebration of the fact that the theatre was the first in London to be lit entirely by electricity, the fairies had electric lights in their hair and at the tips of their wands. Recently the Doyly Carte Opera Co, produced a sold out run of IOLANTHE at the Lin- coln Center in Washington D.C. during the Summer ol' 1978. Lovers of light opera will recognize the characteristic Gilbert and Sullivan features throu bout IOLANTHE. The gentle satire fthis time directed at the House of Lordsj, humor- ous dialogue, the ingenious rhyming of Gilbert's verse ftake note of the Lord Chancellor's Night Song l and the unexpected twist ending, when Fairies join nobility while their Queen is content to become plain Mrs. Willis . . The charm of the music lies, as in all the Savoy Operas, in its appropriateness to whatever mood the libretto requires. There are several examples of musical parody in IOLANTHE, With the entry of the Peers, Sullivan parodies the triumphal marches of Grand Opera Ito write Grand Opera was an ambition of Sullivan's encouraged by Queen Victoriaj. The Guardsman's song incorporates the fa la-la refrain more commonly found in maclrigals, while Mountararafs song When Britian Ruled the Waves is reminiscent of patriotic drawing-room ballads of the period. ,ul , lk 12 ,leeter Lester ............ I 1 158 As I reflect upon. my years at St. Edward's I find much satisfaction in the memories brought forth. I take great pride in this institution, having given four years of my life to it and receiving in return a lifetime of knowledge. This school as a whole has been like a second mother to me. It has prepared me for realities that I never imagined ex- isted. When I was lost or straying from my path it was the Tower that gave me gui- dance safely back to wherel belonged. It has given me shelter within its walls and the food of knowledge with which I have been and always will be able to grow. Rol2eK'l' L. He had plans to print a very well written and vaguely sentimental closing thanking 'people such as Rick Williams and Albert Ochoa for bringing me down to earth when I needed it mostf' but I felt that this page would be put to better use by making it a dedication to Bob. He spent night after night working diligently on this year's TOWER, trying to make it show the traditions that have been started and experienced in the last nine months. He has done his very best for all of the people who lived it, day to day, moment by moment. He held tight to the idea that this should be a book for both today and tomorrow not just for today alone. As a small part of his staffl would like to show my pride in this work by thanking Mr. McDaniel for the privilege of being able to help him. It was his sense of dedication and honor that kept the rest of us on his staff in high spirits and within the deadlines we were prescribed. l tip my hat to you, Bob, for these pages belong to you and to you alone. It is your heart and your soul and it will be kept pridefully in the libraries of many. Brad L. Silverlight -ms.
