BURGER BOMBA 1. JAMES Third Base Catcher Shortslop The 1929 season was featured by games with the best teams in the state. Coach Sheffield made it a point to schedule games with only the most outstand- ing teams in collegiate and semi-pro circles. Teams were not played that did not have a good record of wins. The Saint pitching staff was acknowledged as being one of the best that any college in the south could boast of. The leading pitchers were Captain Dyer, Anders, Scott, Beach, and McDonald. The great work of these stellar moundsmen combined with the good fielding and slugging of their teammates resulted in one of the best baseball seasons a Saint nine has had in the last several years. Of this team Captain Dyer and the james brothers were lost by graduation while Scott, Anders, and McDonald failed to return to the University. 11930 Squad Top row: MICEL, JOE FINGER, PARMA, FIGARI, C. SAMMY DYER Baseball Captain Jim Sheffield, St. Edwards baseball coach of several years ago, was again engaged to coach the 1929 Saint Varsity baseball nine. The fact that at the end of probably the most strenuous season a St. Ed's team ever had the Saints had a percentage of .579 in the won and lost column shows that Sheffield had lost none of his ability to produce fast hard-hitting baseball aggregations. Captain Dyer contributed much toward the success of the season with his superb brand of hurling which netted him a contract with the St. Louis Car- dinals. Iansing, giant center fielder, led his teammates in slugging with an almost .500 percent batting average. Taken as a whole the Saints enjoyed an unusually successful season, displaying great ball playing in practically every game. Pane 99

W. JAMES JANSING LORAN First Base Outfield Out-field For the 1930 baseball season Julius Curley James was chosen to coach the Varsity baseball aggregation. With his four years of Varsity experience Coach James was well qualified to replace Sheffield. During his four years of partici- pation in college athletics Curley James always proved himself an important cog in every Saint baseball machine. He was always a Hashy inlielder and his consistency in hitting was hard to beat. It fell to the lot of Coach James to replace such baseball players as Captain Dyer, W. James, Anders, and Scott and to work in his freshmen material to the best possible advantage. It became apparent early in the year that his best bet among the yearlings would be Pat McLaughlin. This tall lanky youngster has everything it takes to make a big league hurler and the work he has turned in for the Hilltoppers so far has been positively brilliant. Among the other newcomers Fitzgibbon seems the most outstanding at this writing. Coach .5 u:?1'H ti2:?l3ig5bEi27'l.'
