Our sponsors - Mr. Bob Meyer and Miss Terri Collins have been much more than a set of sponsors. They have taught us, not through words, but through their actions to be ourselves, honestly and completely, without following the expectations of others. Bradley Williams 1 'Willy'' Tamara Lynn Witt ' 'Tammie'' Seniors Have ' 'Kansas City here we come'' was a thought that ran through the Seniors' heads as they prepared for their Sneakday trip. Last minute money making projects and the School Board's decision allowed the Seniors of '78 to go to Kansas City, Missouri for their sneakday. A chartered bus arrived in St. Ed at 3:00 a.m. Friday, April 14. And off they were! Arriving at the Holiday Inn in Kansas City around 10:00 a.m. found everyone heading for the swimming pool. The Seniors spent the day playing games, eating, and trying to get rested up for big night ahead. That night, the Seniors went to World's of Fun where they stayed till midnight. Then it was back to the hotel for a goodnight's sleep. Friday morning they checked out of the hotel and headed back to World's of Fun. The first event of the day saw the whole Senior Class heading for the bumper cars, where they were allowed to go as a class and battle out their years of frustration on each other. The class then went their own way. Trying out the rides for the first time brought fear, smiles, tears, excitement to many faces. The day ended at 6:00 p.m. where everyone loaded up and got settled for a long ride home. Arriving home at about 2:00 a.m. April 16 found the Seniors tired but still smiling. Inspite of the rain, the two days spent as a class could never have been more fulfilling. Sponsors, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Meyer, Miss Terri Collins, and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Thompson accompanied the Seniors and added a little extra zip to the trip. The Sneakday trip could be quoted as a ' 'Zambeeze Zinger'' of a time ! . . m Life Is Our College: May We Graduate With Honors Twenty-Four Seniors Receive Diplomas A large attendance filled the high school gymnasium Sunday, May 14. The occassion being Graduation for 24 SEHS seniors. Leading the Seniors to their final event of their high school days were juniors - Mary Lloyd and Keith Nordeen. The Seniors made their dignified entrance wearing caps and gowns in their class colors purple and white. The high school band played the processional and recessional with the invocation and benediction by Rev. Cecil Green. Music was provided by the high school choir, Swing Choir and the graduating Seniors. The songs were ' 'Movin' On'' and ' 'Time Is My Friend.'' The Seniors made the final presentation by singing '' Circles.'' Brad Williams, Russ Rimovsky, Steve Thompson and Joe Meridith sang the verses, with the whole class joining in on the chorus. This year's speakers were Jo Afrank, telling everyone about the happenings of this year's Seniors over the past 13 years. She was followed by Scott Green with his idea of the future for graduates. The presentation of the class was by Superintendent Frank Williams with diplomas being presented by School Board member, Eugene Jensen. Principal Bill Sillau then made presentation of scholarships and awards. 10 Scholarship And Award Winners Michael Cahill Memorial Scholarship - Brad Williams , alternate - John Kmiecik; Douglas Matzen Memorial Scholarship - Brad Williams, alternate -Scott Green; Woman's Club Scholarship - Jo Afrank, alternate - Connie Mahoney; Edith Lightner Memorial Scholarship - Cary Micek, alternate - Scott Green; American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship - Cary Micek, alternate - Becky Harding ; American Legion Scholarship - Steve Thompson, alternate - Keith Evans; Outstanding Student Award from the American Legion Auxiliary - Jo Afrank, Scott Green; President's Scholarship Nebraska Wesleyan - Jo Afrank; President's Scholarship Yankton College - Scott Green; Athletic Scholarship UNO - Ted Jensen; SEEA Scholarship -Mike Johnson; Regent's Scholarship UNL, Honors Program UNL, Platte County Historical Society Scholarship - Dave Meysenburg; Trustee Achievement and Track Scholarship Doane College, Union Pacific Scholarship - Cary Micek; Alternate to Wayne Stae Music Scholarship - Russ Rimovsky; Athletic Scholarship Yankton College - Brad Williams. Pep Club an organization of the past? The 1977-78 athletic season was minus a pep club, however, an unorganized group of spirit boosters backed up the cheerleaders and sport events. People wanting to give the St. Edward teams support would sign up for the bus a couple of days before the event. With so many activities going on - the group chose to discontinue pep club. But next year a pep club will be back - strong as ever! 25 Beavers’ Bubble Bursts — Twenty-Nine Back Row: Coach Bailey, Green, Schack, Thompson, Kmiecik, Keeshan, Rimovsky, Nordeen, Williams, Jensen, Stevens, Clark, Condreay, Stephens, Johnson, Coach Meyer. They finished the 1977 campaign with a 10-1 record. The Beavers, 1976 Class C-2 State Champions, only blemish came at the hands of Bancroft 30-13 in the semifinals of the Class D State Play-offs. The Beavers began the season with thoughts of a possible 2nd State Championship. They won their first four games and barely escaped defeat at the hands of Fullerton in game number five. The Fullerton - St. Edward game was truly a classic. The Beavers coasted through their last four games; and completed their regular season at 9-0. The team traveled to Curtis and defeated Medicine Valley 41-20 in the first round of the State Play-offs. The following Saturday the Beavers unbeaten string of 29 games was snapped by Bancroft. Greg Stevens, Brad Williams , John Kmiecik, and Russ Rimovsky re -ceived All-State honors, with Ted Jensen receiving Honorable Mention. These individuals along with Tod Clark were also Goldenrod Conference selections. The Beavers won the title of Goldenrod West Division Champions. They were also rated third in the state in Class D. In spite of their record the girls finished among the top five teams in the ten team Golden -rod Conference. Inconsistency was a problem that plagued the girls throughout the season. As the season progressed, the girls began to see the importance of working as a team and the necessity of repetition in gaining competence in basic skills. The emphasis was on doing their best against all teams. St. Ed's talent was evident when three members of the squad received All-Conference Honors-Jo Afrank and Cary Micek 1st team, and Pam Sindelar 2nd team. The future looks bright for volleyball with the many fine sophomore and freshman girls. Basketball Season One To Remember The highlight of the 1977-78 boys' basketball campaign, was a trip to the State Tournament, the first for the Beavers since 1928. However, there was plenty of excitement prior to the trip to Lincoln. St. Edward finished second in the Tilden Elkhom Valley Invitational Tournament, second in the Goldenrod Conference Tournament, and first in the D-3 District Tournament. The Beavers went on to defeat Bancroft in the Regionals, qualifying them for the State Tournament, where they beat undefeated Potter, and then lost to undefeated and eventual state champion, Hildreth. Six of the Maroon and White's victories were by two or less points, including all three wins in the Districts! The Beavers, runners-up in the Goldenrod Conference West Division, finished with a school record twenty-one wins against six losses, and were ranked ninth in the state by the Omaha World Herald , and tenth by The Lincoln Star. This is the best record since the 71-72 season when the young Beavers were 11-2. The Junior Varsity experienced several close games throughout the season with fine performances from different individuals. Coach Sillau commented, 1 'Next year will be a rebuilding year as Brad Stephens, Tod Clark, Kurt Cruise and Dan Wilson will be leaving to play on the Varsity squad.'' 34 Meyer’s Sweathogs Complete Season Back Row: Coach Meyer, M. The 1977-78 girls' basketball teams had their ups and downs as they dribbled through the season. The varsity team ended it's season with a final of six wins against seven losses. While the reserves finished 4-5. The Beavers met face to face with some strong teams during the Conference Tourney which allowed them to finish with a 4th place. They however, managed to place 2nd in the Goldenrod Western Division. A disappointing loss came in the Beavers final game as they lost in overtime to Shelby by one point in the first round of District tournaments. Individual honors were awarded to Karen Mahoney as she was selected for the 1st team Western Division All-Conference title, and to Pam Sindelar as she made the 2nd team. New faces were added to this year's roster. One in particular was coach, Bob Meyer. A powerful force will be back next year to continue where this one left off. The first individual to place in a state meet was the highlight of the 1977-1978 wrestling season. Jim Plebanek, a sophomore, received the sixth place title in Class D. Jim finished with a season record of 24-6. Jerry Meridith and Grady Wells also qualified for the state meet. The team was plagued with injuries , but in spite of that the wrestlers showed an improvement over last year. Proving so was Jim Plebanek and Dave Meysenburg as they won first places in the Conference Tourney. Also numerous school records were broke. Fourth Conference Title In The Last Five Years The St. Edwaid tracksters began the 1978 track campaign with 17 individuals - 4 Seniors, 2 Juniors, 5 Sophomores, and 6 Freshmen. The weather was very poor throughout the season, in which a number of duals and triangulars were postponed indefinitely. However, the season did find the Beavers placing 4th in the Bergan Invitational, 2nd in the Polk Invitational, 7th in the North Bend Invitational, and 2nd in the Wisner-Pilger Invitational. The Beavers also placed 1st in the Goldenrod Conference for a 4th time in 5 years. After placing 4th in their Districts, they finished off the season with a 10th place at the State Meet in Omaha. Fine performances came from top individuals throughout the season. John Kmiecik won the 440 at Conference for a second straight year, and finished 3rd in the 440 at State. Eldon Kuntzelman continued his winning ways as he won both the mile and 2-mile at Conference then went ahead to win the Class D 2-mile at State. Eldon's winning time was 9:59.5, breaking his own school record of 10:07.3. Ted Jensen also qualified for the State Track Meet in the discus but failed to score. 1st Row: Stoley, Galitz, Stultz, Thompson, Carlson, Clark. 2nd Row: Werner, Flaherty, Riggs, Baker, Kmiecik, Kuntoelman, Munn. 3rd Row: Coach Mumm, Jacobsen, Stevens, Williams, Jensen, Clark, Plebanek, Stephens, Lloyd, Coach Bailey. Sport Of Track; What’s It All About By Coach Steve Bailey 40 To the students of St. Edward High School, track is nothing more than running the city's streets. Finishing a race only to have a car honk to force you off to the side of the street, experiencing twisted ankles and shin splints because of the asphalt being covered with gravel or falling into a chuck hole waist deep. How about our excellent facilities for field events? Using the sidewalks for runways, not being able to hold the discus ring until mid April - the throwing area being a mud hole from winter ice skating. I feel it is my duty as a coach to explain to the community about our facilities and try to improve the situation we have. We go to track meets and our kids are like lost sheep, our kids simply do not understand track and neither do you the community. Let's put it this way. If you want winners in football and basketball you better have those individuals our for track in the spring. Every spring students .... Kmiecik Jensen Kuntzelman .... become less enthused when track season beings. Who blames them, would you lie to be chased off the street by a car? We have fine athletes who have set our track records on sheer natural talent. But because of our terrible facilities what has heppened to,the average individual in track? They become discouraged and drop out. Finally, I'd like to say track is possibly the most important of all sports. What is more important in athletics than learning how to run properly, getting the knees high, pumping the arms, remaining relaxed. What I'm trying to say bluntly is we need a track of some nature. We have had a stream of outstanding athletes pass through our public school the past five years. How much better could these individuals have been, a coach must always wonder? Sweat Suits Are For Sweating 78 Season - A Rebuilding Year Back Row: Mary Tenski, Linda Choat, Laurie Kearney, Michelle Witt, Kathy Lloyd, Coach Peil. Front Row: Cindy Munn, Joan Munn, Barb Berlin. As the '78 track season got underway, only two of the eight girls were returning tracksters -Laurie Kearney and Michells Witt. Six new girls made up the remainder of the squad. However, only seven girls finished out the season. Althouhg it was a year of gaining experience for the newcomers , veterans Michelle and Laurie set new school records in the discus 87' 10M and shot put 30' 10 respectively. Letter winners for the year were Laurie Kearney, Cindy Munn, Michelle Witt, Linda Choat, and Barb Berlin. The girls faced tough competition at the Kearney State Indoor, Grand Island Booster Meet and the Schuyler Invitational. Five girls placed in the conference meet and two placed in the District meet. 42 Two New Records Set Booster Club Backs Beavers! The St. Edward Booster Club was formed to help improve the high school athletic program. The Club has had many fund raising projects as well as donations and dues. A large share of the money was used to buy films for the football games; also a new modem weight machine was purchased, and a new large modem scoreboard has been installed at the athletic field. The Club is presently working toward the erection of a new illuminating sign, which will advertise the coming school events, and during the summer it may be used for public events of interest to St. Edward and the surrounding community. The Club's aim to make a boy or girl a well-trained and better athlete by all means available. Since the class was all juniors they called their paper The Junior Journal. The class published 11 issues of the paper, as well as an elementary edition and a depth report on crime. Assignments were rotated to give each student the opportunity to cover different topics. First Row: Danny Christenson Brad Stephens Miss Wulf Second Row: Tod Clark Kurt Cruise B. J. The intramural program held a volleyball tourney, a hotshot basketball tourney, and ping pong tournament. In addition to the tourneys the group sponsored a Student of the Month program. The teachers nominated the students and the Council selected one each month from the nominations . The Council also helped to promote the recognition night banquet, by supplying some of the medals and helping with the meal. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA Gina Kmiecik Janell Zabka Connie Mahoney Teresa Swett Annette Taylor Future Teachers of America was a new activity at St. Edward this year. Any student that was interested in teaching as a career or in a related field could join the activity. The students were given a period of time in the elementary rooms which they could work with students, under the supervision of a teacher. This allowed the student an early glance at being in the Education profession. And On And On And On And On And O Vocal Music Opening day of the 1977-78 school year found the music room of SEHS filled to the maximum as the mixed choir began their first rehearsal. Musical experiences were many and varied as the 50-voice choir began to work in preparation for the concerts and performances that were in the not-too-distant future. Soon the halls of St. Ed. High School were filled with the sounds of singing that ' ’floated'' from the music room as choir rehearsed during that one period of the day set aside for them. November rolled around and choir presented their Fall Concert for a large audience. Many different songs such as ' 'The Circle Game and ' 'No Man Is An Island showed the groups' versatility and style. The Christmas season was soon upon everyone and choir helped bring cheer by participating in the annual Christmas concert. In no time at all the school year was drawing to a close and choir was preparing for their last events of the year. The first on the list was District Music contest held in O'Neill. Ching - a - ring Chaw and Today were sung by mixed choir and they were given a excel-lant'' rating. Music contest proved to be one of the highlights of the year as individuals and small groups from choir helped bring home 6 Superior'' and 2 ' 'excellant'' ratings. Choir members next put the finishing touches on songs that were to be sung for the Spring Concert. No sooner did the Spring Concert end the Choir was singing ' 'Movin' On'' for Graduation. Only then was the year finally to end and the music could be put away until the following year. Choir members proved ' 'That music is the universal language' ' as their singing brought joy and happiness to everyone that heard them sing. 1st Row: Harding, Kearney, McIntosh, Lloyd, Johnson, Swrett, Cruise, Thomazin, Meridith, Klassen, Cumming, Prorok, Dawson, Swett. 2nd Row': Munn, Shotkoski, Zabka, Case, Smith, Stephens, Rimovsky, Nordeen, Clark, Stevens, Carter, Thompson, Fla- herty, Mahoney, Taylor, Berlin, Lloyd. 3rd Row: Sindelar, Werner, Rosane, Mahoney, Sorensen, Green, Williams, Jensen, Condreay, Thompson, Meridith, Medelski, Kmiecik, Schmidt, Mahoney, Munn, Micek. o S 8 w n i .r 1 o I’m a Swingin' Singer announced buttons worn by members of St. Edwards High School's Swing Choir. This motto was proven true time and time again as Swing Choir sang and danced their way through numerous performances. The 16 member organization-aided by their accompanist Sherry' Benson put in many long hours of hard practices to prepare their music for a polished performance. Swing Choir could be seen practicing in many places during the year - the gym, hallways, the commons area anyplace where a piano could be moved to was used. Highlight of the year was the Apollo Show Choir competition held in LeMars, Iowa. Over 50 schools from Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota participated in the contest. The competition was the first of its kind that the St. Ed. Swing Choir had ever participated in and everyone agreed it was well worth all the long, hard practices ' 'endured'' by the members. Swing Choir performed at all concerts during the year. The Fall Concert came alive with such songs as ' 'Comer of the Sky'', ' 'Bohemian Rhapsody'' and ' 'All It Takes is Love''. During the Christmas Concert, everyone in the audience joined in singing many old and familiar Christmas carols as they proved that '' Love Is the Meaning of Christmas''. Spring found Swing Choir members preparing for the annual Spring Concert where they thrilled the audience with songs like ' 'Ease on Down the Road'' and ' 'Celebrate''. District Music Contest again gave evidence that all hard work pays off. In the end as Swing Choir again received a ' 'superior'' rating for their performance at the function. 57 FHA Chapter Receives The FHA Chapter received the Red Rose Honor Chapter Award at the 1978 State Convention. Cast After many hours of long hard practices, music and drama students of St. Edward High School presented the musical ' 'Brigadoon' ' to combined crowd of around 400 people April 22 and 23. The musical is the story of a mythical community in Scotland called Brigadoon, which appears for one day every 100 years. The plot revolves around two young men from New York who wander into Brigadoon the day it appears. During the course of the day one of the young men, Tommy Albright , falls in love with one of the young girls from Brigadoon, Fiona MacClaren. While Tommy and Fiona spend the day together, Tommy's friend Jeff Douglas is taken care of by Meg Brockie. During the day many things happen in Bridadoon. The town people have a fair and a wedding takes place in the afternoon. Charlie Dal-rymple marries Jean MacClaren. As the play draws to a close we find Fiona and Tommy happily together for the rest of their life. After all the hard work of practicing-songs, dances and acting, building a stage and set, sewing costumes and getting all the little things done that take so much time, ' 'Brigadoon'' was termed a success and well worth all the effort put forth by everyone involved. In the ordeal, Roy tears his suit coat, and Norma breaks her diamond ring and puts a run in her nylons. After all else fails, they call in the groom, who pounds on the bathroom door and yells '' Cool it! After this, Mimsey comes out. Roy then wonders what this younger generation is coming to and concludes that she was better off in the bathroom. 66 One-Acts One-Acts “The Mice Have Been Drinking Again” Cast Doug Werts ......................Jerry Reed Carol Werner ....................Julie Reed Teresa Swett ............Roxanne Conch Ross Munn ............Harold D. Leffler Jerry and Julie Reed are a conservative couple, living in San Francisco. They live happily, except for one major problem in their lives; Julie's '' hippie -type'' cousin Roxanne owns the apartment and lives with them. Roxanne has some strange habits, such as using the grocery money to buy sunflower seeds to eat and sherry to make the mice tipsy and keep them happy. Jerry despises Roxanne and tries to fix her up on a blind date. Julie sends her name into a computer dating company. Roxanne meets her Computa-Pal, who is disguised as a guru, but is actually a check-out boy at a grocery store . They fall in love, and he moves in with Roxanne . Jerry and Julie move from their apartment into the apartment vacated by Roxanne' s true love, and all live happily ever after. The 1978 one - acts were presented Jan. 8, under Director, Mr. Ron Kluck. Acting as Assistant Director was Shiela Anderson. ' 'The Mice Have Been Drinking Again represented St. Edward at District contest and received an ' 'excellent'' rating. Ross Munn was one of the eight chosen as '' outstanding ac -tor'' out of a field of 400 participants. 67 Seniors Put On Their Own Acts DANCE WITH ME The Moment May Be Temporary Homecoming '77 was filled with memories no one will ever forget. The annual snake dance took place on Thurs., Sept. 23, 1977. The announcements of the homecoming attendants were made and coach Bailey threw the Bluejay dummy into the fire. The day of the big game excitement filled the air. The parade showing the class banners and floats, and community' pep rally got everybody in the spirit for the game. Spirit rang out as the Beavers plucked the pulp out of the Newman Grove Bluejays. At half time the crowning of King Brad Williams and Queen Connie Mahoney took place along with the honoring of the attendants. Following the game, a pizza party and record dance was sponsored by the student council. Another homecoming came to a close with a victorious win, smiles and tears. 70 But The Memory Is Forever KING Steve Thompson QUEEN Connie Mahoney FIRST ATTENDANTS Joe Meridith Rhonda Modelski SECOND ATTENDANTS Ted Jensen Cary Micek Sponsored By FFA And FHA JUNIORS SOPHOMORES FRESHMEN Loel Condreay - Mary Lloyd Gina Kmiecik and Jim Plebanek Larry Stoley - Lanette Sorensen 73 Master of Ceremonies Doug Werts MENU Welcome - Doug Werts Response — Cary Micek Swiss Steak Grace — Annette Taylor Potatoes Au Gratin Toast — Jerry Meridith Green Bean Pacifica Dinner Parmenson Garlic Bread Dedication — Mary Lloyd American Apple Crisp Class Prophecy — Karen Mahoney Tossed Salad Will — Cary Micek Monstuious Meritaward — Brad Stephens Closing - Teresa Swett Deviled Eggs 74 Junior-Senior Prom Come Sail Away With Me was the theme of the 1978 Junior-Senior Prom held Saturday May 6. Ending a year of hope and heartbreaks .. . good and bad times ... smiles and tears ... victories and defeats . . . A's and F's? It means much more than pasting pictures on paper for sure. We found out that these memories that we glue together are the only ones that some of us will have here at SEHS. We want to thank all of you for being a part of our year by showing us fun and laughter and a special thanks goes to Mrs. Long for the confidence and inspiration she distributed in creating a collection of memories. So HELLO11 Friends, Annual Staff of '78
