if you run for fun was one of the famous slogans used by the coachs but as any trackster could tell you, it's not fun. certain individuals did exert themselves extra to earn them new school records, jr. john kmiecik broke the 440 yd. dash record (former holder- chuck micek) by .6 seconds, kmiecik clocked it in at 50.9. the speedster also broke the 220 record in a time of 22.4 seconds. although wind aided, it still breaks fred lantz' record in 1956. kmiecik was the only one to qualify for state competition in his speciality, the 440 yd. dash. jr. greg stevens, leaped 6' to gain him a record in the high jump which broke steve roberts' record of 5'11 in 1964. freshman eldon kuntzelman shattered the 2 mile record by 35.8 seconds to set the record at 10:17.3. maynard carlson was the previous holder, each member of the team did a personal best this year to aid the school. can’t hack it front I. to r. - baker, flaherty, williams, stevens, rimovsky, kuntzelman, johnson. middle- jacobsen, cruise, meri-dith, prorok, Christenson, swett. back- mumm, green, plebanek, zabka, jensen, rosane, kmiecik, bailey.

team efforts the girls had to make an adjustment from last year as they moved up to class c competition this year, class c being the toughest class in the state, handicapped many of the girls' goals, sophomore michelle witt, established a new school record as she winged the discuss 84' 4 to break her own record, the micek sisters again showed their talent as they combined efforts to qualify for a total of 5 events in the state meet, connie qualified in the 440, 80 yd. hurdles, and the high jump, she finished 2nd in the 440 at state, connie also broke her hurdle record with a time of 11.07 seconds which will stand as a school record, cary qualified for the state meet in the 100 and 220 yd. dashes, she failed to bring home a state medal, two faces were added to the group, gina kmiecik and laura kearney. gina experimented with many events to find her speciality, laura participated in the shot put. janell zabka was the student manager this year.
