So, why wait? Let us begin. Lois Wyse On September 18, 1972, 186 high school and junior high students entered the doors of a new school building. With the students came the excitement of new teachers, new classrooms, and different subjects. It was hoped that St. Edward would have some winning teams in athletic competition, a top FFA chapter and exciting plays and activities. Each student also knew that there would be long boring classes, trips to the principal's office and tears of frustration when they came to school and realized that they were having a test in their first period class. Each school year has its good and bad times and this year was no different. Within this book lies many memories of the 72-73 school year. So why wait? Let us begin. Uptimism Is looking At all sides And concluding There is Hope. Repeat That Sentence, Please Do not tell What you i Tell me What you meant . . . And the • Walls Came Tumbling Down Tuesday, May 2, 1972 was the beginning of razing of the old St. Edward school building. As many interested spectators watched, old and happy memories were reminisced by the alumni and also the youngsters who had attended school in that building. Although it was sad to see the old school being tom down, St. Edward's citizens looked forward to the construction of the new K-12 building. Throughout the summer, builders were hard at work to get the school finished in time for the 72-73 school year. Rainy weather and other difficulties interfered and the students were unable to start until September 18. At that time only the high school section was finished enough to hold classes. The elementary grades attended school in the churches. However, in November they were able to move into the new building and at the end of the school year students and faculty were enjoying the complete use of St. Edward's new school. Below is a picture of the west view of the old school which was built in 1895. At the right of the page are pictures showing the destruction of the east side of the old building. The pictures at the bottom show the new building from the north and west sides. 4 new school We, The Senior Class of 1973 dedicate this yearbook to our parents. GUESS WHO After a sleepless night, the Seniors piled into a school bus armed with pillows, blankets, paper sacks, etc. The day, Thursday, May 17th, 1973, began with a long bus ride headed for Omaha with a stop along the way at Fremont for breakfast. The day was spent shopping or doing as you please at Westroads in Omaha and then a quick trip to Lincoln to see the popular group The Guess Who” at Pershing Auditorium. Following the concert, we went to the East Hills Supper Club and enjoyed a steak supper. After a long and exciting day, we climbed wearily on the bus, tried to sleep or the way home, and arrived in St. Ed at 3:00 a. m. Friday, May 18th. It was a day to remember! ! ! A lot of fun disappointing --A Senior. had a better team then the r ord showed. If we would ha had 4 good breaks instead of bad ones, it would have bee decent season --A Junior. season was OK, but I wouldr call it fun. If we would hav worked a little harder on del we could have gone farther ; done better --A Junior. I agree 100%. Our defense wa what saved us all year. The breaks that we had all came offense except for one. Our defense was probably one of the best in i conference --A Senior. Our season was better than what our record showed --A Freshman. We only had 6 Seniors and they had to lead whole team. Considering this, we did alright --A Sophomore. Practicing under very poor conditions, on the tennis court, rain or shine, hot weather or cold, the coach's good moods and bad, and playing all their games away from home, the team had no victories. Although they were unable to get a win this year, the team shows promise for next year. Reserves: 1ST ROW--D. Pont, M. Engstrom, M. Baustert, D. Miller, C. Krueger, C. Dawson, M. Valasek. 2ND ROW—L. New Gym and Improved Record A little more speed and height was one of our biggest problems. Balanced scoring will be one of the main things the reserves will be looking for. —COACH SILLAU. If the team would have scored a dozen more points spread out in several close games, we would have had a winning season instead of a losing one. --COACH SENFF. Best year in a long time. --SOPHOMORE. I am a basketball nut. I love the game and feel that with a few breaks, we would have had a . 650 season. Practices were long and tough, but you usually didn't get bored out of your mind. After the new gym was built, we did OK, I guess. We screwed up district, though. — SENIOR. We did very well considering the facilities we had during the early part of the season. —SOPHOMORE. We were actually an inexperienced team. Practice and hard work failed to do the trick for the girls' track team as they didn't place in any of the five meets they participated in. Several school records were broken during the course of the season. Sports 21 The Homecoming activities began Thursday evening with a victory march from the school, through town, to Coach Forbes's house, and to the practice field. A dummy, representing a Shamrock was burned in a large bonfire. After several yells and speeches the freshmen, sophomore, and junior attendants and king and queen candidates were announced. A parade and pep rally was held Friday afternoon. Float and banner winners were announced. Cash prizes were given by the Student Council. The junior class float won first place, sophomores second and seniors third. The Pep Club had the number one banner, junior high received second, and juniors third place. Each of the coaches and the senior boys gave a speech and the attendants and candidates were introduced. At halftime of the game Saturday night, the St. Edward marching band performed under the direction of Mrs. Carla Bartel. The band played Fanfare and did a series of pinwheels while playing Work Song March. The twirlers, Mary Baustert, Joni Schack, and Vicki Thompson did a routine to the tune of Put Your Hand in the Hand . A special fire routine was done by Mary Engstrom to the tune of Cherish . The band left the field playing the school song. At this time the attendants were presented. The night was made complete by a victory over the Shamrocks 22-0. 22 activities Homecoming Was. . . One Day Late! The game was originally scheduled for Friday night, October 6th, but was post-poned until Saturday night, October 7th because of a mix-up of dates with the referees. All through the week spirits were rising! Yes, Homecoming would soon be there with all of the class floats, prizes, the pep rally downtown, announcement of the attendants, the burning of the dummy and high hopes of a SEHS victory! All of this and then no game.. . But the dreams came true the next night when at halftime of the game, Kim Channer and Carol Kaspar were crowned the 1972 Homecoming King and Queen. First runners up were Deb Baker and Jerry Nauenburg, and Second runners up were Peg Jacobsen and Rick Schack. The junior attendants were Dianne Engstrom and Lindsey Niemann, sophomore attendants were Joni Schack and Casey Micek, and freshman attendants were Ann Taylor and Todd Meridith. activities 23 THE S : S.
