Senior Class Prophecy Old Home Week It is the year 1970, and a beautiful evening in October. Everywhere in the town of St. Edward are huge posters reading, Old Home Week. Many days ago, invitations were sent to all former residents urging them to attend and stressing particularly this evening when a wonderful entertainment is to be given. All the talent for this program is strictly home talent. Every performer was at one time a resident of this town and was graduated from our high school in 1955. The hour for the great event has arrived. Every seat in the vast new auditorium is filled, and all are eagerly awaiting the performance in which many delightful surprises have been promised. The platform is a mass of beautiful flowers and autumn leaves and the walls are hung with garlands of pine and laurel. It is truly a festive occasion. Seated in the audience are many celebrities. As I look about me, I see a number of my old classmates. There is KEITH CARTER, our kindhearted friend, who became very wealthy through wise investments, and is now a noted philanthropist. His money is paying for much of the Old Home Week expenditures. The ladies in the front seats are all so stylishly and becomingly dressed that they arouse my curiosity. I am told that their beautiful garments come from the very select, not to say expensive, shop of BEVERLEY FRANCIS, who designs gowns for all the best-dressed women in the country. She is here herself and looks the glass of fashion and the mold of form. Seated near her is ROGER NELSON, a real estate dealer who owns so much property that he has to keep a card index of it in order to know it himself. He has given the use of the auditorium and the spacious park, both of which belong to him. Seated at one side, watching with interest, I see SHARON MOORE, dignified and haughty. I ask about her and am told that she is the head mistress of a very fashionable girls' school in Genoa. Standing in the door, looking for old friends, I find JACK ROBERTS, editor of the largest daily paper in the state, and very active politically. Except that he has grown a trifle stouter and looks more cheerful than ever, he has not changed one bit since his high school days. Two people, entering, receive a warm reception from the committee at the door. They are DR. HOWARD MIL-BURN, a famous surgeon in a large hospital, and, attractive as ever, CONNIE TAYLOR, superintendent of nurses in the same hospital. If there are any accidents tonight we feel sure the sufferers will be properly attended to with Howard and Connie on the job. A round of applause greets the man just taking a seat by the window. He looks familiar and yet not quite familiar enough. I can't tell who he is. Ah, he waves his hands around and talks excitedly. Now, I know who he isl TONY WEED. And what do you suppose he is? Remember how he used to love astronomy and meteorology and all that stuff? He's turned his knowledge to good account and now he is the weather man. Yes, indeed. It was he who furnished the splendid weather for the Old Home Week, and that is why he was so wildly applauded. Every day he sends out his little bulletins and often the weather is just as he predicted. A woman is sketching the people as they come in and doing it very well, indeed, for I peeped over her shoulder to see. Of course you know who that is. Yes, it's MARLENE NIEMANN. They say she has become quite famous as an illustrator of magazines stories and newspaper articles. Remember her wonderful drawings? There is a policeman directing traffic to the punch bowl. He's turning his head this way and, yes, it is, none other than MARVIN STEVENS, handsomer than ever in his policeman's uniform. Ohl Ohl He seems to have lost control of the traffic and is gazing across the room. There's a woman running toward him and it looks like his beautiful wife, JULIE JAIXEN. They've been married for 15 years nowand look as young as the day they graduated. Sitting in the corner are two very distinguished looking gentlemen. It sounds as though they're discussing their occupations. Why, it’s NORMAN THOMAS and as far as I can tell, he's telling about his job as head of the U. S. Forestry Department in Washington D. C. It sounds as though he's very well pleased with his stenographer, DOROTHY DICKENSON. She's been doing a wonderful job. The other gentleman is none other than the famous coach of Notre Dame, LARRY ECKLAND. Hearing an awful argument in the back of the room, I turned and saw BEVERLY SA VICKY dressed in a policewoman's uniform handling an intruder who was trying to get in. Sitting across the isle from me are VIRGINIA ROTHERHAM and JOYCELYNN ZELAZNY. I talked with them a few minutes and learned that Virginia is running that famous Di-De Nursery. There are 30 children enrolled and half of them are her very own. Joycelynn is private secretary to the President of the United States. As we were sitting there, someone satdown by us and I recognized her as LOIS NORDEEN. Lois is bookkeeper for the Income Tax Bureau so if you have any complaints about your income tax, talk to her. And now the entertainment is to begin. There is a hushed expectancy. The lights in the auditorium fade and the footlights flash on. Before the packed house appears a tall, dignified figure who makes an eloquent address of welcome. Some of the well-turned phrases sound pleasingly familiar. I remember our class president, JOAN WERTS. It is, indeed, she. She was lawyer for a time and is now the Judge of the State Supreme Court. She acts as mistress of ceremonies, also, and after her excellent speech introduces the performers. But first she calls attention to the beautiful flowers and other decorations, saying that they were the gift of JANICE DOOLEY, now the leading florist of the town. I remember her exquisite taste in decorations in years gone by and am not at all surprised. The Judge announces that after the entertainment, refreshments will be served through the courtesy of Miss MICKEY REARDON, who is proprietor of the delightful Old Home Tea Room. As she speaks the words, my mouth waters in anticipation, for I have not forgotten what a good cook and homemaker Mickey always was. Now the entertainment proper begins. There is gay music, like circus music. Then on the darkened stage in the spotlight appears a dainty figure, kissing her hand to the audience as an attendant arranges a wire across the stage. My goodnessl It's MARIANNE RAITT. She always was a good singer but I didn’t think she would go into circus business. The Judge says she is the most clever wire dancer in the world. What a salary she must getl Then the Judge introduces a prosperous-looking man who she says is a Broadway song writer and the author of many popular song hits. It is LES HOMAN, and he plays and sings for us his last three compositions and very good they are, too. One, written especially for the occasion and called Old Home Folds, makes a decided hit with his audience. Next comes a big surprise: Miss Marilyn Monroe, the famous movie actress; and it is our old friend, MILDRED NELSON, very much changed. She has golden hair and is better looking than ever, but she seems to have acquired a foreign accent. Now she’s dropped the accent and is talkingas she used to talk. She's telling all about Hollywood and how she became famous. She asks if we remember the imitations she used to do in study hall when the teacher was called out of the room. And we all remember. It's not a surprise to us that she's such a success in 43 the pictures. That girl could play anything, from Juliet to Mother Goose. Next is a famous trumpet player who plays the most beautiful music for us. Yes, of course, it's BILLY SWANSON, and he plays even better than he used to. He has just returned from a concert tour in Europe. In fact he returned a week earlier than he had intended, just to attend the Old Home Week celebration. The spotlight is now shifted to the great auditorium organ, and the Judge introduces MARY LOU NOVOTNY, now organist in a city church and teacher in an institute of organ music. She plays beautifully and looks not a day older than when she played in school. Then, last of all, looking stunning in an elaborate evening gown, comes DEANNA WEBSTER. She is a writer of plays and has two successful ones running on Broadway now. She makes a friendly little speech, addressing particularly our superintendent and the members of the faculty, who are in the audience enjoying the program and who look as young and awe-inspiring as they did when we trembled before them years ago. Then the entire audience rises, as the performers all appear on the stage at once. Our organist and our trumpet player play and, led by our composer, we all sing Auld Land Syne and adjourn for the promised refreshments from St. Edward's Old Home Tea Room. As I looked around the room, there was one person I didn’t see, ROSEMARY SCHUMACHER. I stumbled onto Mr. Schlichting, who is now Superintendent of the state college at Boone. I asked him about Rosemary and he showed me a telegram he had received from her. It read, Am private secretary to the head of a huge corporation. He was born crazy and had a relapse. Won't give me time off to come to reunion. I shall write all his letters backward for a week. It has been a real delight to see all our old friends so young and prosperous, so generous of their money and talent. In short, it has been an Old Home Week to be proud of and the old home folks should be happy to have such celebrities as these for their very own. Last Will And Testament We, the class of 1955, in the town of St. Edward, the county of Boone, and the state of Nebraska, being in as good mental condition as usual, and in much better temper than usual, do hereby make this, our last will and testament, rendering void and of no avail any former will or wills that may have been previously made by us during a period of temporary optimism. First: We give and bequeath to the Junior class our well-known nerve, which they will need next year, and all the examination questions we have been given during the past. year. We believe that an examination, like history, often repeats itself. The answers, never owned in entirety, have long since been mislaid by us and are not included in this legacy. Second: To our good friends, the Sophomore class, we leave our patience. It will be found useful as the only means by which they can endure the Juniors. Third: To the young and unsophisticated Freshmen we leave a map of the school building, so that they will not get lost and roam about in everybody's way looking for their classrooms. We include with this map our little book entitled, How to Tell the Teachers, a pamphlet compiled by us after four years of arduous study. Fourth: I, DOROTHY DICKENSON, do will my safe driving ability to JANET CUMMING. I, LARRY ECKLAND, do will my athletic ability to BUD HORN. I, LEAL HOMAN, do will my ability to get along with teachers to that Freshman, BILL MORAN. I, SHARON MOORE, do will my false teeth to FRED LANTZ in hopes he keeps his in better than I. I. ROGER NELSON, do will my long curls to PHYLLIS FONDA so she won'thaveany trouble letting her hair grow long. I, LOIS NORDEEN, do will my speed and ability in shorthand to CLEO HOADLEY. I, MARIANNE RAITT, do will my high soprano voice to BEVERLY MYHRE. I, JACK ROBERTS, do will my knowledge of the metropolis of Genoa to TIM GOODMAN so that he need not waste worthless hours roaming around in a daze. I, BEVERLY SAVICKY, do will my tallness to MONNIE WEBSTER in hopes she will be a better volleyball player. I, MARVIN STEVENS, do will my car to EARL NOVOTNY so he doesn't have to waste so much energy walking Annie home. I, CONNIE TAYLOR, do will my good co-ordination in sports to MARGIE ADAMS so that she may become a star athlete. I, DEANNA WEBSTER, do will all my height to KATHLEEN THOMAZIN so she won’t have to stoop so far to reach the water fountain. I, JOAN WERTS, do will my job as Senior Class President to next years President. Amen! I I, JULIANNE JAIXEN, do will my giraffeness to the shorter part of the underclassmen in hopes no one outgrows me. I, JOYCELYNN ZELAZNY, do will my ability to eat carrots and celery to anyone who doesn't like them. I, TONY WEED, do will my butch hair cut to WAYNE CRISS. I, NORMAN THOMAS, do will my ability to love up the girls to any shy person that wants it. I, BILLY SWANSON, do will my quiet ways (?) to that timid Freshy, NORMAN BERRGREN. I, ROSEMARY SCHUMACHER, do will my desk in Senior Home Room to JIM MAHONEY so he will have a place to throw his candy and gum wrappers. I, VIRGINIA ROTHERHAM, do will my 5's in Citizenship to any deserving person. I, MAXINE REARDON, do will my Cook Book to the Freshmen girls so they will not burn any more ovens. I, MARY LOU NOVOTNY, do will my job in the Drugstore to HOWARD WOLFE so he will have something to keep him busy and out of mischief after school. I, MARLENE NIEMANN, do will my art ability and many ideas to the blackboard committees for games so they may be able to use something different for a change. I, MILDRED NELSON, do will my blond hair and light complexion to ANITA SAUNDERS. I, HOWARD MILBURN, do will my favorite saying I didn’t do anything, to JANICE LONG. I, JANICE DOOLEY, do will my speediness to Albion track team. I, KEITH CARTER, do will my ability to run the mile to SID MERIDITH so he can keep away from all the women I, BEVERLEY FRANCIS, will keep what I DO have!!
