High School Song Faithful and true hearted. Let us boast for our Old High. We revere her and defend her, And her colors proudly fly. We will stand for her, united. Of her deeds we gladly tell. Her colors streaming, Glad faces beaming. So here's a cheer for her we all love so well. II Honors she has taken, On the track and with the ball. May her colors never fall; There's no other that can match her, When her team is on the field. Her boy's the sweetest, Her girl's the fleetest, Thenhere'sa cheer for her, for her who ne'er will yield. Chorus Joyous and ever loyal, J_.et us boost our Old High. Let every heart sing, Let every voice ring, There's no time to grieve or sigh. It's ever onward, our course pursuing May defeat ne'er our ardor cool. But, united, we will boost for her, our Old High School. HIGH SCHOOL YELL Brackerty rax carix caree Brackerty rax carix caree High Oh umdee dah Ullah balee balee balah St. Ed. High School. Rah! Rah! Rah! FOREWORD In this Beaver, we have tried to portray every phase of our high school life and also show in some measure the ideals for which our high school stands. We dedicate this annual to John Hood, custodian, for the many little things he does, which we have not fully appreciated in the hope that it will express our gratitude. 2 In 1870, 65 years ago, there were no white people in Boone county. It was then just a meeting place for the Indians, the Sioux from the north and the Pawnees from the south. The first settlers came in 1871 and in 1872 a school district No. 10 was organized, but it was so large as to be inconvenient so it was divided and No. 17 was organized with about the same boundaries as at present. They arranged for the building of the first school house, which was located in the northwest part of town, the town at that time was north of Beaver street and west of the railroad. There was nothing east of the track. The material for this building was all hauled from Columbus that being St. Edward's trading point as we had no railroads. Volunteer workers erected the building. Miss Kittie Coyle was chosen first teacher. This one room school house served as St. Edward's school and was really a community center. A few years later the building was inadequate to care for all the children, so a fine two story frame building was constructed on the location of our present day brick building. This building had two rooms, one on each floor, the Primary department naturally occupying the lower room. Two teachers were employed and all of this was a remarkable advancement. The class of '93 was the first to hold a graduating exercise. There were but two graduates. In 1893 the west wing of the present brick structure was built and attached to the two story frame building. In 1912 a kindergarten building was built. In 1917 a brick addition was added to the east, which gave us a fine brick structure----and a gymnasium with a real stage. In 1929, a Smith Hughes building was erected on the north east corner of the high school campus. This year the school house was completely redecorated. 3 Beaver Staff SEATED: Mr. Schultze, M. It's about time I get out and look at the world. Where will I go? Maybe I'll visit some old friends. Let's see, Judy Carter; yes, I think I'll see her. If I fly to Texas I can make it in about 16 minutes, on the new advanced Jetette. Judy was voted by the class to be the most successful girl of the class. There's a sign now, Judith's Hybrid Kitty Ranch . She got her wish too, to live on a ranch or farm. Judy told me Bev Van Wey is an old maid, head of The Better Girl's School . She's completed her book, Women Can Get Along Without Men . Well, I guess it's time to move to Las Vegas, Nevada. I see another sign. Rev. Sam Case will speak tonight on, How to Handle the Young People of Today . Well, California’s a nice state. Sam told me his old pal, Terry Saunders, (bachelor of the class) has a position at the Girls State Reformatory, where he's head of the Athletic Dept. Yes, it's nice and warm here. Bing, bing--Bong, bong--Oh, I see Adrene Staack, the famous piano tuner. She decided she'd rather listen to a piano than to school kids. Believe I'll visit Sgt. Beth Weldon, retired now from the WAC'S. She has decided to find her a man. Beth told me June Long was in Idaho raising potatoes. Last year she won .first prize for the biggest potato grown in the United States. Well, time to start headin’ east, and stop in Minnesota, to visit Jerome Condreay at his Baby Photographer Shop. Punky told me to be sure and visit Professor Gerald Evans,(BA, MA, PHD). He is teaching English and Dramatics at Harvard. 1 went to see lovem' and kill'em Katie Cruise on Broadway in her 40th hit Kiss Me Kate. Kate mentioned that Richard Cumming is very busy arranging schedules and press conferences for Jack Sawyer, famous orator on Sports. I was walking down the New York streets where I met Dr. Rollie Johnson peddling his latest medicine, Sadacall, a cure for sadness. I guess'Dale Matson is busy refereeing wrestling matches. Had a nice chat with him, and learned that Delores Campian washead governess for Prince Charlie and Princess Anne, but now had retired quite comfortably. Bob Eckland is Guard and Business Mgr. of Margaret Truman. Bob sings duets with her to give her a thrill. Now it's back to Nebraska. Madeline Werts is really busy with her family, and especially since taking Mary Lane's place on the World-Herald staff. Ted Mahood runs a school for blondes and teaches the Palmer Method Handwriting. He told me that Nana Cumming is the First Woman to be State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Lois Matzen, has her wish. She is working in a Horsepital, trimming manes and shoes. She informed me that Keith Jensen has been teaching Ag. at St. Edward now for 40 years. He is getting childish now. Bill Schumacher is ambassador to Africa. In his spare time he shines elephant tusks. Mike Weed, boy voted most likely to succeed, was voted to be Mayor of Boone, Nebraska, last November. (I think his 12 beautiful red-headed daughters voted him in.) I recently heard Bethyne Hirsch taught school on Mars, but the little spaceteerswere too much for her, so she moved to Evergreen Cemetery. Since this completed the Class of '54, I returned once again to my home, to grow old gracefully. 15 Last Will And Testament We, the Senior Class of the St. Edward, High School, County of Boone, state of Nebraska, possessing sound minds and good sense and about to pass out of existence, do declare and publish this, our last, ultimate and final will, revoking all previous and former wills made by our hands. Second: We give the Juniors the Senior Home Room and the privilege of getting out first for dinner and for dismissal. We also leave them our polished manners and our politeness. Third: We leave to the Sophomores our old, ancient text books, on one condition, that they take as good care of them as we did. Fourth: We leave to the Freshman our loving kindness, and we want them to promise to be as kind to the incoming freshie as we were to them. Fifth; To the future students we leave our encouragement, fortitude, fun, pep, and all the things which will help them to have as swell a time as we did. These confused and green ffeshies were bound to become the Class of '54. For our class officers we chose Bob Eckland as President; Terry Saunders, Vice-president; Beverly Van Wey, Secretary; and Leo Mahoney as Treasurer. Our class sponsor was Ed Nissen. For our motto we chose; Build for character, not for fame . Our flower is the white carnation, and the class colors are Royal Blue and White. We were given an initiation party by the Sophomores and later had our own class parties. Our Freshman year proved very successful with the loss of only three classmen during the year. Our Sophomore year proved to be very dull and we were blamed for everything that went wrong. (We were to blame, but no one could prove it.) The class officers were President-Beth Hirsch; Vice-president-Jerry Evans; Secretary-Judy Carter; and Treasurer-Terry Saunders. Our sponsor was William Maben. This year we had thirty-three in the class. In our four years in high school, our Junior year was the most rushed and hardest of all. On Oct. 28, a well chose cast under the direction of Lamont Larson, presented a very successful comedy Cheaper by the Dozen. We won the Interclass Basketball Tournament on Nov. 30th by beating the Seniors. Our next great project was the Annual Style Show, which we presented on the Nights of April 27 and 28. Through the cooperation of our class sponsors; Augusta Anderson, Derys Schultze, and Walter Peterson, this event was very successful. Ca-vecho Revue was the theme, we chose. On May 4th, we presented the Junior-Senior banquet, which was a gay affair. Our theme was Springtime. The gym was beautifully decorated with a wishing well. May Pole, and garden furniture. Our class officers for the year were Madeline Werts, as President; Jerry Evans, Vice-president; Lois Mat-zen. Secretary; and Nana Cumming, as Treasurer. We ended our Junior year with only thirty in the class. Lois Matzen went to Girls State and Keith Jensen went to Boys State. On Aug. 28th, we registered for the last time in SEHS, with only twenty-four in the class, all who were of the original freshman class. For our last class officers we chose for President-Judy Carter; Vice-president-Dale Matson; Secretary-Beth Weldon; and Treasurer-Beverly Van Wey. Our sponsors are JoAnn Spohn and Don Schultze. We received our class rings on September 9th, and then went to Columbus and Albion to sell advertisements for the yearbook, which was under the sponsorship of the Senior Class. On October 23rd, we motored to Columbus to have our Senior Class pictures taken. We were very proud when we received word, that our Sam was an All-Stater, who had been picked by the Lincoln Journal Star sports staff. The Class of '54 was again Champions of the Interclass Basketball Tournament by beating the Juniors on Nov. 17. A mystery-comedy in three acts, The Case of the Missing Heirs , was presented by the graduating class on Feb. 9th. It was under the direction of Sally Beck. Bright and early on March 26, we left the underclassmen to go to Omaha to enjoy all the sights that there were to see. The evening ended with a tired bunch of happy Seniors returning from a gay day, that no one will forget. On April 26-27, the class participated in the Style Show Mode Of The Mist when we all turned on our charm and wore the latest styles. Sunday, May 9th, the Baccalaureate sermon was presented by Dr. Bert Dessire of the Methodist Church. The evening commenced our last week as Seniors in the St. Edward High School. On the Fourteenth of May, Dr. Earl Wiltse of Grand Island gave the Commencement Address, and we received our diplomas with outstretched hands. Thus concluded our unforgettable and memorable four years in the St. Edward High. There will be no other phase in our lives that the memories will be as dear to us, as the ones of our dear old school. 18 Mary Lou Novotony, Pres. Howard Milburn, Vice. The musical numbers, including a song written especially for Style Show, were under the direction of Miss Schmid. This name was well-suited to the production, because the models did truly seem to emerge from behind a mist-like substance. The backdrop presented the image of a distant castle to the audience, with beautiful flowers everywhere. A bubbling silver fountain, complimentd by the beautiful silver stemmed tree, added to the elegance of the setting. The effects achieved by the lighting were unique and impressive. The highlight of the evening arrived, when Bev Van Wey and Terry Saunders, attendants to the royal couple, who are chosen by the Student Body, emerged from behind the beautiful scenes to meet Queen Beth Weldon, and King Jerry Evans, who reigned over Modele De Mist land amidst all the splendor and enchantment. 62 BACCALAUREATE SUNDAY, MAY 9, 1954, 8:15 P.
