Saunders -- As a junior playing end, he was a good pass receiver, and blocker. Terry was good on defense and is a two year letter-man. Case -- As a junior playing fullback, the 175 pounder hit hard both offensively and defensively. He was the top pass receiver, and is also a two year letterman. Merrell -- As a senior played center. He was a good defensive and offensive man. Also a two year letterman. Baily -- Don as a junior played end. He was a very good defensive man. Evans -- Played end as a junior. Was a good pass receiver and good blocker. He is a two year letterman. Lantz -- Played end as a freshman. Was speedy and has lots of promise for the following year. Weed -- Tony as a sophomore played halfback. He has good promise for the following year. Baker -- Played center and as a freshman has lots of good promise. Eckland -- As a sophomore played quarter-back. He acquires many promises for the following year. 21 SPALDING -- The Beavers opened the season with a 46-6 victory over Spalding. Case, Smith, and Moore lead the offensive attack. Merrell, Saunders, and Evans played good defensive ball. Smith led the Beavers with 18 points. CEDAR RAPIDS -- Not playing the brand of ball as was seen in the first game, the Beavers put on a poor showing the first quarter. They began rolling in the second quarter, however, and came home on the long end of a 34-12 score. Each one on the first team scored. WOOD RIVER -- The St. Edward Beavers traveled to Wood River for their third game of the year, and came home on the short end of a 44-28 score. This was the Beavers first loss. Merrell, Saunders, Case, Smith, Evans, and Lantz played good defensive ball. Case and Moore each got 24 points for the Beavers. PLATTE CENTER-- The Platte Center Explorers defeated the Beavers by a score of 53-38. Weldon, Lantz, Case, Saunders, Meridith, and Eckland led the Beavers. LEIGH -- The Trojans of Leigh rolled over the Beavers by a score of 46-12. Although getting a slow start, the sport gained in popularity throughout the season, and is now so popular among the girls that it looks as if the sport will be continued regularly in the years to come. We enjoyed a moderately successful season in so far as wins and losses are concerned, having won six and lost four. We opened the season with a surprising and decisive win over the Cedar Rapids team, 54-36. For our second game we journeyed to Newman Grove and again were victorious by a fairly large margin, 42-29. Our last big win came when we played Albion on our own floor early in March. The Albion girls were outclassed all the way as the St. Edward girls racked up their third straight win, 42-26. On March 17th we split a double-header with Cedar Rapids, winning the first game after trailing by thirteen points, 36-33. An exhausted St. Edward was no match for a fresh Cedar team in the second game which the Cedar girls won easily, 62-22. Albion beat St. Edward in a return game at Albion 44-26. The St. Edward girls entered the eleven team Albion Invitational Volleyball tournament held March 26 and 27th. While we were not successful in winning any games there, no one was disappointed by the performance of our team. Our first game was one of the best of the tournament, although Bartlett did come out on the long end of the score, 29-18. We won our next games through forfeits, and finally met Primrose in the finals of the losers bracket. Primrose won with difficulty, 36-24, as our girls played easily the worst games of the season. While most of the girls on the first team this year were Seniors, there seem to be plenty of underclassmen to fill the ranks next year. It is hoped that the girls who make up the team next year will show the same competitive and team spirit, ability to cooperate and improve, that the 1953 team did. 41 WHEN THE MOON RISES Mrs. Spendwell......................Rogene Fusselman Tommy Rott.........................Richard Cumming Arlene Spendwell.......................Udine Fisher Jon Tarko..............................Jim Meridith Roger Lynn.............................Bill Reardon Helen Brooks...........................Shirley Francis Carla..............Thursday............Bonnie Newton Carla...............Friday.............Bonnie Adams Mr. Brooks......................................Mike Weed Paula.........................................Duaine Raitt Pete...................................Larry Eckland First Gypsy............................Keith Jensen Second Gypsy...........................Leo Mahoney This years opera was a success, pretty gay tunes, along with a good cast and a colorful stage, made an enjoyable evening for those who attended. 42 Look, Freshmen! The corn was sold and the money put away for the new uniforms. Bake sales, holly sales, and candy sales at the basketball and football games were also sponsored by the band. The St. Edward Commercial Club's donation was of great help and value in the purchasing of the new uniforms. During the half of the St. Edward-Cedar Rapids town team basketball game, the band presented their new uniforms to the public. The band participated in the annual District Music Contest, at Central City, Nebraska, and received a rating of good. Everyone was well pleased with the rating as this was the first year in which they participated in the contest. A wonderful start and much progress has been made towards the creating of a band. We hope that it will continue to progress in the years to come. CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF ’53 CARTER GRAIN IMPLEMENT CO. BILL REARDON College Prep. A modest man never talks of himself. Lucy Baker ................Wilma Jaixen ...............Sandra Moore ..............Marilyn Johnson The Clue of the Red Ribbon was presented January 30. 1953. The play was unusual in one respect -- the entire cast was composed of girls. The story takes place in a country cottage where a group of girls have met for a vacation under the guidance of Miss Summers. Janet and Carol appear to be the main leaders among the girls. When it is discovered that Janet's country cousins, Mandy and Jane, are coming for a visit, Janet and Carol decide to send them back home in a hurry. Mandy and Jane learn of their plot and decide to turn the tables and really make hicks of themselves. When they become almost unbearable, Janet and Carol decide to hide Miss Summer's engagement ring to give the impression Mandy and Jane had stolen it. The situation looks bad when the ring is really stolen. However the culprit is finally apprehended and the matter cleared up. J8 Bright and early (about 4:00 a.m.) Thursday, April 2, the sleepy-eyed Seniors began their journey to Omaha. We visited many interesting and some dull spots, as Boy's Town, Joslyn Memorial, WOW TV, and Supreme Bakers Company. We were then turned loose to go each his merry way. After spending a most interesting day we met at the Bus Depot at 11:30 P.M. A very tired looking bunch boarded the bus for our exit from Omaha. 59 Cavecho Revue Narrators: Judy Carter and Beth Hirsch Cavecho Revue was the theme of the 1953 Style Show presented by the Junior Class on April 27 and 28, under the direction of Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Schultze, and Mr. Peterson. Musical numbers were under the direction of Miss Schmid. A king and queen and their attendants were selected from the Senior Class by the student body. King Bill Reardon and Queen Karen Martin reigned with their attendants, Bonnie Adams and Bill Moore, over the land of Cavecho Revue. Cavecho Revue Royalty King, Bill Reardon and Queen, Karen Martin Attendants, Bonnie Adams and Bill Moore 61 Last Will and Testament We, the Senior Class of St. Edward, in the County of Boone, State of Nebraska, being of sound mind and memory (?) and considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life, do therefore make, ordain, publish and declare this to be our last WILL AND TESTAMENT.
