ST. EDWARD HIGH SCHOOL Robert Westmore—Editor-in-Chief Dean Land—Assistant Editor Donna Potter—Business Manager Connie Clark—Associate Editor Norman Scott—Advertising Manager iy y Ik BEAVER VTTT Foreword Memories, being immaterial, are extremely difficult to capture on the printed page. It is the only hope of the 1949 BEAVER Staff to place sufficient material between these covers to serve as a constant source of stimulation for the construction of memories within the readers’ own mind. Dedication Throughout the eight years that Mr. Walter F. Peterson has been the Vocational Agriculture instructor in the St. Edward High School, many honors have been bestowed upon that department. From there has issued forth, under his direction, six State Farmers— one being also a Nebraska Star Farmer. We of die BEAVER Staff of 1949 believe that the dedication of this book to him should be given as a token of heartfelt gratitude from those whom he has helped. Into a world, divided into two camps, engaged in a cold war there go thousands of fine young folk. They are the very cream of our youth. They are the graduating seniors of 1949. It is our earnest prayer and sincere faith that they will have the stability of character and soundness of judgment necessary to bring order out of the chaos into which their elders have allowed the world to drift. Regretfully we see them go forth to accept the challenge, but we do not harbor a single doubt as to the final results. They will meet the challenge as youth has done since the beginning and if there be such a possibility as world peace, the present generation will achieve it. Our blessings go with you, Class of 1949, May Health, Happiness and Contentment be your lot. Supt. H. E. Warren ADMINISTRATION To The Senior Class of 1949 During the four years you have spent in St. Edward High School, it has been my privilege to have a part in directing your experiences, and sharing the joys of your achievements. Your conduct has not always been faultless, but I know you possess those qualities of character which will guide you in noble living, and worthy attainments if you act in harmony with the dictates of your own minds. It is my sincere wish that your high school years have been of real and lasting profit to you, and that you may be successful in your chosen undertaking of life. May you become men and women whom we shall be proud to recognize as graduates of our school. Most sincerely, Augusta Anderson Left to Richt: Mr. Peter M. Ida, Miss Mary Louise Helt, Mr. Walter F. Four years manage to be filled by textbooks and tests, club meetings, athletic games, parties and dances, a few after-school sessions, and the inevitable report cards. STYLE SHOW ROYALTY MILFORD MYHRE — the guiding hand of every worthwhile student activity—received the homage of a grateful student body when he was crowner’ Style Show King on April 14. Milford’s impressive record of school service includes the presidency of the first Student Council in S.E.H.S. history, as well as numerous class and club offices, music activities, and sports writing. His plans include college and perhaps a music career. Milford was attended by genial EDDIE COOPER, the personification of the “small but mighty” expression. Eddie’s easy manner, do-or-die spirit, and athletic prowess have endeared him to the hearts of S.E.H.S. students and fans. QL'EEN JoANN SWANSON reigned as Style Show Queen amidst a colorful display of fish, a water cave, and marine plants at the Aquacade. As queen she displayed the graciousness and poise which brought to her the student votes electing her queen. The Majorettes, dramatics, and Future Teacher activities have claimed her talents. The queen’s attendant was EVELYN REARDON, another future teacher. Evelyn consistantly engaged in extracurricular work. Her senior year she added cheerleading to her activities. Maroon editorials by Norman Scott gave impetus to action on the long-fermenting idea for a council. Principal Augusta Anderson in September appointed Milford Myhre, Sonny Edmunds, and Robert Westmore as a senior committee to study the question. Organization presidents Rex Fischer, Jerry Flaherty, Bob Raitt. Don Moore, Norman Scott, Evelyn Reardon, Muriel Shell, and Nhdine McColl joined in the task. On November 5 a constitution was presented to the students; on November 8 it was declared ratified. In its semester of operation the Council has sponsored after-game dances, an allschool carnival that grossed 8350, and numerous smaller projects. The two-house council consists of a 12-member Lower Council and an Upper Council composed of Council officers and sponsors. The officers and members are Milford Myhre, president; Beverly Swanson, vice-president; Rex Fischer, secretary; Norman Scott, treasurer; Sonny Edmunds, Robert Westmore, seniors; Connie Clark, Hal Hasselbalch, juniors; Delores Evans. All the world’s a stage To foster interest in dramatic art and to give opportunity for creative expression in play production, the Purple Masque has long been the S.E.H.S. dramatic club. Limited to 24 members this exclusive organization stands as one of the most coveted of memberships. Try-outs before the clubs officers determine the chosen elite. Eddie Cooper, Denny Moore, Carvel Reynoldson, Gayle Collins, Ardath Milburn, and Jo Lightner gained membership this year. Officers and old members are Norman Scott, president; Muriel Shell, vice-president; JoAnn Swanson, secretary; and Beverly Swanson, treasurer; Mary Ellis, Myrna Milburn, Don Moore, Donna Potter, Bob Carter, Connie Clark, Hal Hasselbalch, Patty Novotny, Bob Raitt, Lee Ellis, Delores Evans, Jerry Flaherty, and Daryll Raitt. On March 15 three 1-act plays were staged. Suitable for Charity, a comedy, included Denny Moore, Muriel Shell, Don Moore, Jo Lightner, Eddie Cooper, Lee Ellis, and Mary Ellis in the cast. A drama, High Window, was presented by Dee Dee Iverson (non-member), Don Moore, Milford Myhre, Connie Clark, and Beverly Swanson. The most elaborately staged production was For the Love of Allah, a folk farce of the Alabama back country. Norman Scott, Myrna Milburn, Jerry Flaherty, Hal Hasselbalch, Ardath Milburn, and Patty Novotny had roles in this play. PURPLE MASQUE Norman Scott JUNIOR CLASS PLAY With ticket sales topping the S185.00 mark, the Junior Class cashed in on the proverbial popularity of the “western ' story in the three-act comedy, M'liss—My Western Miss by Virginia Mitchell. The play, based on the famous old story by the immortal Bret Harte, was staged in costumes of the 90’s. Mr. Raymond L. Conley directed the play; Mrs. Augusta Anderson had charge of make-up. i SENIOR CLASS PLAY When the senior class staged the Kaufman and Hart Broadway comedy, George Washington Slept Here, in January, they adhered to the best tradition of the theater that “the show must go on.” Due to blocked roads only 200 people saw that the play remained a comedy in the full sense of the word although Mr. Raymond L. Conley, director, had found it necessary to blue-pencil many of the lines. To develop more efficient teachers and to prepare members for the profession of teaching are the major goals of the Future Teacher organization. A special goal this years has been for each member to cultivate in herself the qualities of personality and character which are the foundations for successful teaching. With the exception of one year, St. Edward High School has had an active future teacher group since 1928. St. Edward has been a chartered member of the Future Teachers of America since its organization in 1937. Activities of each meeting included a business session, a workshop in which handcrafts were learned, and a social period which included visiting and refreshments. In December a Christmas party with an exchange of gifts was enjoyed. Each month the class decorated the Normal Training Room as a one-room rural school might be arranged. Officers for the year were Evelyn Reardon, president; Jo Ann Swanson, vice-president; Mary Ellis, secretary; Darlene Campain, treasurer; Doris Buck, news reporter; and Mrs. Augusta Anderson, sponsor. Requirements for membership are to be enrolled in vocational agriculture and to have a suitable project program. The competitive record of the F. F. A. was outstanding for the year. The judging team composed of Harold Johnson, Don Moore, Harold Thompson, and Norman Reardon went to the Hereford Judging Contest at Grand Island and took 4th place in state-wide competition. Harold Thompson placed 1st in individual judging. The St. Edward Chapter, represented by the first five officers, took 2nd place honors in the Parliamentary Procedure Contest, District 4, at Norfolk. To help achieve one of their goals—to promote international good will—the chapter collected clothing for Bundle Day. These articles were then packaged and senl abroad to help the needy people of other countries. Another goal stressed was that of providing wholesome individual and group recreation. At each meeting some form of recreation was provided—either singing or ihe playing of games—and the group also entertained the F. F. A. fellows and the eighth grade girls at parties during the year. Some of the other activities included the selling of candy with the F. F. A. at football and basket ball games and during noon hours. At Christmas the girls fixed boxes of food that were given to the Thompson’s Nursing Home. Peace on Earth ... “Why the Chimes Rang,’ a one-act play by Elizabeth Apthorp McFadden based on a story by Raymond McDonald Alden, was presented December 19 by the Grammar Department. The scene of the fantasy is a peasant hut at the edge of a forest near a cathedral town. The plot concerns the old legend that a perfect gift laved upon the cathedral altar will cause miraculous bells to ring out. The story is the struggle of the poor peasant boy, Holger, who is torn between a burning desire to attend the cathedral service and his simple duty to remain at home to care for one of His humble servants. The climax comes when Holger’s only coin causes the chimes to ring after the offerings of the proud, the wealthy, and even the King have failed to cause the miracle.
