EGLIH One of the most important subjects ofthe Saint Dominic High School curriculum is English. An introduction to the classics, the fundamentals of composition, and gram- mar comprise the first year course. Vocabulary, a study of the novel, and paragraph de- velopment are emphasized in the second. In the third year, formal and informal essays, the short story, biography, fiction and poetry by American authors give an appreciation of the masters of literary works. The study of symbolism used in literature and the critical analyses of books and magazine articles constitute the bulk of the fourth year English. x x Kristine Olsen, '67, displays the medallion she won tor her essay, The Signiticance ot the World's Fair. She was awarded a SIZES prize. Steven Birmingham, Ann Cowden, Veronica Connelly, Robert Harper, and Francis DeVine master the tunda- rnentals ot debate under the tutelage ot Sr. l'losina. Seniors begin class with a choral recitation. A perusal ot the Readers Digest will tollow. 83

Students sing the entrance hymn at First Friday Mass. Mrs. Curran and Michael Conlon accompany the students as they sing, The Drummer Boy, during the Christmas assembly. MU IC The students of St. Dominic High are given the opportunity to derive cultural merit from weekly sessions in group singing. The participants de- velop an aesthetic sensibility which will serve them in later years, for singing gives an appreciation of the beauty and simplicity of the Mass and brings the students closer to God.
