We are commanded hy Cod to love our neighbor, We express this love in affection for our family, devotion to our country and in worship of our Cod. ln our daily lives, we come in contact with people of all creeds. races and colors. Nevertheless, the realiza- tion that all are 'LCod's children makes us hrothers in the truest sense. The exterior appearance is really the least important aspect. On the north shore of Long Island lies the village of Oyster Bay. lt is important historically because here took place the famous exchange of letters between Major Andre and Benedict Arnold. Oyster Bay also sheltered Washington and his troops during the Battle of Long ls- land. Here. too, is the home of the beloved Theo- dore Roosevelt. Yet today the importance of Oyster Bay lies in its shipbuilding and fishing industries. These have been developed for years. The bay, in addition, invites the pleasure seeker. All day long on the hay are seen speed- ing motorboats, fishermen dangling their lines for a catch, and, when the tide is in, countless numbers enjoying a swim. As one stands on the sands of the Oyster Bay beach, its blue waters can be seen for a great distance. Beautiful are the numerous small boats rocking with the waves, the white caps, which slap up against the shore, and the sun- sets which cast their glow on the water. This is God's work,-and His handiwork is everywhere. fan THE MOST REVEREND THOMAS E MOLLOY S T D fx N. - T T nun nufslnncf mnns us In the Incarnation Christ reveals His infinite love for all human beings. insofar as man is con- cerned this mysterious and miraculous fact gen- erates and proclaims his intrinsic dignity and par- amount worth. The Incarnation, morever, establishes the soli- darity of mankind and thus forever all human beings are to be acknowledged as one single univer- sal family. Christ came into the world to sanctify and save the human race as the one human family which it is. He restored the consciousness of that natural brotherhood which is the corollary of our com- mon origin through creation and by realizing our participation in the Divine nature, through the ln- carnation, He insured the sublime, supernatural brotherhood in Christ. This brotherhood encompasses every indivdual human being without exception. It created a rela- tionship more intimate than that of blood. It estab- lished a solvent of every barrier of religion and nationalism. And, therefore, Christ and His Apost- les taught- there is no longer Jew, nor Creek, nor barbarian, nor Scythian, for you are all one in Jesus Christ. iCal. 3-281 'What a blessing it would be to our contemporary world if this Christian truth would enlighten, guide and inform the aspirations and activities of every member of the human family but especially, at the moment, the leaders of all nations who, facing the threatening menace of a third global conflict, are endeavoring to establish unity and order among the peoples of the earth and to insure world concord and peace. The Blue and White of St. Dominic's opened the 1954- season with a 41-18 loss, handed to them by their intra-town rivals, Oyster Bay. This was the first meeting of the two teams and may be the beginning of a long series. The Blue and White lost the next two to La Salle and Levit- town. Then the tide changed and in a spine-ting- ling, action-packed encounter, the Hilltoppers gained their first win of the season with a 7-6 victory over last year's Little Three Champs, Seton Hall. A one-point margin meant victory once again as St. Dominic's beat Bethpage 13-12. The outstanding runs of Eddie Myles and ,lohnny liertolino. hard-driving full backs, com- bined with excellent defensive backfielding of Ted Hargrave and AI O'Brien, who kept the passing attack to a minimum, will be sorely missed by next year's squad. Captain Kevin Casey proved himself valuable both as defen- sive end and offensive halfback. Senior lines- men, who are among those to be praised for good performances. are ,loe Martirano, at guard, Gene Duily and John Herrity, at the tackles, and ,loe Walsh, at center. f Q Listen, Vinnie, when you get hack in there, I want you to . . . As Thompson stops ball carrier, John Bertolino and Joe Martirano mow in to complete tackle. Redmond Thompson John Bertolino Much credit goes likewise, to our under class- . men. Were it not for players like Joe Husty, Ed Duffy, Junior Hoey, John Purcell, Vinnie Conforti, Ange Calasso, Remy Thompson, Pat Conklin, Fred Reiff, All-Scholastic Johnny So- viero and Jackie Dowling, the last two having been chosen co-captains for next year, the sea- son would not have been so successful as it was. On these, St. Dominic's builds its hopes for next year. Besides the fundamentals of football, we have also been taught by our coaches, John Davis and Richard White, rules of good sportsmanship and fair play. We shall carry these principles with us for the rest of our lives. 'L Kevin Casey ' 'Q nw ' ' if fv f 19' fave ' rl 'v .Av ' V. Q 1 Y v 3 if 34, is 04 o 1 W? . FRONT ROW: Leo Reardon, John Bertolino, Robert Walsh, Martin Fenlon, Patrick Conklin, The 1955 basketball season started off with an easy victory for the Hilltoppers as they defeated WESllJllFy' with a score of 57 to 37. Then the tide changed and thc Blue and White bowed to Glen Cove, losing by 15 points. The first home game was played by a new. more determined Westbury and this victory was not so easily won. as the Green Wave strove to make up for the loss suffered in the first clash. The 66-52 score. with St. Dominicis on top, indicates the effort was futile. The traditional game with their town rivals. Oyster Ray, gave the Hilltoppers their second defeat. The next two games netted one win and one lossg a thrilling victory over Se- wanhaka. won by a one-point margin. and a defeat at the hands of Vest Hempstead. The knowledge acquired through participation in high school journalism is not only that of the mechanics of newspaper work, but also a greater comprehension of the influence and power wielded by the press. Thus, the newspaper's far-reaching effects indicate the im- portance of publishing the truth. The misunderstanding arising in the world to- day between nations can be eradicated by setting forth in our newspapers and periodicals the democratic way of life, based on C0d's com- mands to man. We will attain an increased un- derstanding and respect for others, and in turn, others will learn to understand and respect us, if we lay down the sword of dissension and take up the pen of integrity. Can there be a more horrible object in existence than an eloquent man not speaking the truth? -J' STAFF OF THE STUDENTS' PEN , Now, Terry, it's just this word here . . .
