The St. Dominic varsity debaters have been very successful this year in interscholastic debating in both Bowdoin and Bates Leagues, as well as in the University of Maine Tournament. In the Bowdoin League, St. Dominic's placed ninth in the varsity division and third in the novice division, with Gilbert Xlarcotte receiving First honors in that division. The topic for debate was: Resolved that the Truman Far Eastern Policy has not served the best interests of the United States . Later in the year at the Edward Little Debate Tourney, St. Dominic placed hrst, winning eight out of twelve debates. At the University of Maine, the School won six out of eight debates, for which record it received gold-embossed certihcates of achievement from the University. In the Bates League, St. Dominic's atlirmative defeated Port- land by a 2-1 count, and the negative lost to Lewiston by the same score. The Bates League topic for debate was: Resolved that all American citizens should be subject to conscription for essential service in time of war . The debaters were efficient also in the South Portland Practice Tourney. C. Xlckvnv, '53 I ' Oratorical Contestants

Freshman Debaters 4 R Beaulieu G. Bouffard, R. Dube, R. Hebert P L Pelletier, G. Nault, P. Lachance Our debaters, Varsity, junior Varsity, and Freshman teams, would not have had such an interesting and enriching season, had it not been for the financial help and the moral support contributed by many generous benefactors: a friend in need is a friend indeed. It is with grateful appreciation that we concede their names to the annals of St. Dominic's: Rev. Father Drouin, Rev. Bro. Fernand, Dr. and Mrs. Irenee Marcotte, Mrs. Alberte Sasseville, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Murphy, Mr. Robert Casavant, and the Saint Dominic Alumni Association. Our heartfelt gratitude extends also to our devoted coaches, Brother Fulbert and Brother Theodose, to Wilfrid Lauze and Charles Murphy who have shared their experience so generously with us, the undergraduates. May we ever prove worthy of such kindnesses. A. SASSEVILLE, '54
