The St. Dominic varsity debaters have been very successful this year in interscholastic debating in both Bowdoin and Bates Leagues, as well as in the University of Maine Tournament. In the Bowdoin League, St. Dominic's placed ninth in the varsity division and third in the novice division, with Gilbert Xlarcotte receiving First honors in that division. The topic for debate was: Resolved that the Truman Far Eastern Policy has not served the best interests of the United States . Later in the year at the Edward Little Debate Tourney, St. Dominic placed hrst, winning eight out of twelve debates. At the University of Maine, the School won six out of eight debates, for which record it received gold-embossed certihcates of achievement from the University. In the Bates League, St. Dominic's atlirmative defeated Port- land by a 2-1 count, and the negative lost to Lewiston by the same score. The Bates League topic for debate was: Resolved that all American citizens should be subject to conscription for essential service in time of war . 9 junior Debaters N. Proveneher S. Sasseville X f Lambert P. Gastonguay G. Chretien A. Sasseville C. Bisson Terrible! Boring! Gerald Chretien and Carl Bisson won the championship debate of the Saint Dominic's Intramural Debatin Tournament. They defeated an affirmative com- bination of N. Provencher ann? P. St.I-lilaire by a 4-1 score. Carl Bisson was voted the best speaker. The two teams earned the right to enter the finals when they topped Albert and Sarto Sasseville, and Louis Begin and Irenee Caron, two eight-graders from St. Peter's. More than 15 teams had taken part in the preliminary round. The names of the Intramural Champions will be engraved on a special plaque dedicated to the event by Rev. Bro. Fernand, Principal, and individual awards were made to the Hrst three teams. Varsity debaters and senior students acted as judges during the toumament. They are: R. Thibeault, J. Bilodeau, F. Dumont, R. Murphy, R. Brodeur, R McGraw, J. Tessier, C. Murphy, R. Clifford, A. Beauchesne, W. Lauze, H. Fortier, L. Thibeault, G. Marcotte, R. Gosselin, N. St. Pierre, and G. Goulet. W.
