THE FOURTH EDITION UF 1 9 48 LEWISTONJIAINII 1 One of man's faculties that afford much pleasure and satisfaction is his ability to relive the past with the aid of a suggestive instrument. We, the Seniors of 1948, have meant this yearbook to be such an instrument. We have tried to make it as informative and recollective as possibleg and above all, to im- pregnate it with the spirit that is St. Dom's. We are presently enjoying our last days at St. Dominic's. They are marked as usual by much joy and laughter, while we are getting ready for the final get together. But the day approaches when it is time for good fellows to part, and we already an- ticipate the catch in our throats that will betray the tense emotion when four years of happiness in work and play are come to an end. We earnestly hope that this edition of EC H0 will prove a fitting souvenir of our loves, our aversions, our light and informal moments, when friendship was at its best. We know it shall remain very close to our hearts. Guilbert Courtemanche, '48 Editor-in-chief. f . I Fr. . . I - S . I . At last the great day had come. On this April 18, armed with our bags and cameras, we were leaving St. Dom's at exactly 2:23 P.M. The ride to Boston was just another trip. There we boarded another bus with fine reclining seats, a quiet motor, air conditioning, and, believe it or not, a good radio which was kept busy at all times. At 4 A.M. we stopped in front of the Taft in New York in order to freshen up a bit. From then on, it was a seldom interrupted trip of over 6 hours. We reached the national Capitol at 10:30 and checked in the Harrington. For four full days, we visited Washington! How could I tell you what we saw, the experience that we got? Washington! the city of distances, of wide and straight' streets, of marble and granite! We soon realized that it would take a few years to get thoroughly acquainted with the wealth of historical monuments and museums that we were trying to see in four days .... The Capitol, the White House, Mount Vernon, the Lee Mansion, the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials, the Pan-American Building, Washington Monument, the Smithsonian Institute, the Library of Congress, etc., etc., such were the wonders we could but cast a hasty glimpse on. Some of the boys shall never forget their walking up and down the 900 steps at the Washington Monument . . . Everyone of us brought back very personal memories. For some, it was the heat that scorched usp for others, it was the long and tiresome walks that we had to makeg a few were impressed by the F .B.I. departmentg more than one marveled at the beauty of the Library of Congress or the Pan-American Building: as for me, I shall never forget the Mellon Gallery of Art, with its huge marble columns, its high and vast rooms, and its mirror-like floors. We were fortunate to have very good cicerones in the persons of Mr. Joseph Gosselin and Colonel Francis McCann, two residents of Washington, who are good friends of our Principal. They were with us all day Sunday and Monday, and they took us to the various buildings which, of course, they knew very well. We are very grateful to them for the time and help which they so graciously contributed to make our visit in Washington profitable. We left Washington Wednesday morning at 8:30 A.M. We stopped at Phila- delphia where we enjoyed a tour that took us to the Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross' Home, and most of the historical places of the city. We were perhaps a little disappointed at the general appearance of Philadelphia. At 3:30 we were en route to New York where we arrived at 5:45, just in time for dinner. We were very lucky to have selected the Taft as our hotel while in the Metropolis. Its splendidlocation allowed us to reach most of the buildings and theatres in a few minutes' walk. The service was so courteous and efiicient that we looked like millionaires .... The three days we spent in New York were well occupied: we left early in the morning and came back late at night. The Planetarium, the Rockefeller Center, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, St. Patrick's, Radio City Music Hall, the Roxy, the Center Theatre, etc., were some of the places which we had the opportunity to visit. We saw the Opera, La Traviata, and the good Broadway Musical, Oklahoma. This was a wonderful adventure and I wish we could have continued it for a month. As all good things must come to an end, we left New York at 3 o'clock, Satur- day afternoon, with empty wallets perhaps, but with a wealth of delightful memories and wonderful experience. We were home early enough Sunday to take the 5:30 mass at St. Peter's. Of course, the rest of the day - of the week, indeed - was spent in trying to recuperate from the lack of sleep .... Richard Lambert, '48 ,Wu .,-W., l DU VENT PLEIN LEURS VOILES! We, the juniors, have been blessed with matchless teachers this year. Bro. Clement has proved the best comedian I ever saw. Bro. Albert may be an expert jugglerg he can't be compared to our home room teacher when it comes to comedy. just ask ours to dramatize one of Moliere's or Corneille's plays .... He would put Hope, Durante, and Skelton to shame! Our Junior year will not soon be forgotten. We will always remember that St. Dom's was the State Hockey Champ, that it had a great football team.f Of course, foremost in our souvenirs will be the best Prom ever to be organized in honor of any Senior Class. Raymond Comeau, '49 We, the juniors, are glad to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart to whom we are so much indebted. The influence of their personalities have enriched our lives in more than one way. They have shared our troubles, our joys, our games, and our toils. At all times, they stand ready to give a helping hand. We may never be able to repay them in a material way, but we will remember them and this beloved school as long as we live. Memories last a lifetime, but the memories of St. Dom's will live forever! Lucien Carrier, '49 I will always appreciate the fact that I transferred to St. Dom's this year. I believe those who have always gone to a Catholic school cannot appreciate it the way I do. Here the common friendliness has simply overwhelmed me, and I have found what religious teaching actually means in one's life. In some schools, studying may be optionalg here, you study or else .... I am getting better ranks than I ever had before. I came from twenty miles away to attend St. Dom'sg it was worth it! Jos. C. Brannigan, jr. '49 This third year of high school has proved the best so far. The subjects were tough, the periods were long, the teachers strict, yet we had a grand time. My classmates were the best I ever had. Our genial friend, Mr. Chouinard, for instance, turned many a dull day into a happy one. Why, even the Brothers could not resist his spontaneous sense of humor .... Many incidents will forever enrich my memory. One of them stands out very prominently among my many souvenirs. It happened a few days before Christmas when we had a party. We suddenly decided to have someone sing a song, and Horse Blais was drafted. Now, do you know Horse as a singer? . . . . Never try to find out . . . . He then tried to sing Alouette ! Even now when I think of it, I am laughing myself sick .... Yes, we had a grand time. This may sound foolish, but if I had to start this year over, I'd be glad to do it! Leo Proulx, '49 We, the Juniors of the Class of '49, are very proud of our achievements of this past year. We had more honor students than any other class, and we can boast of very good athletes. We are very grateful to our beloved teachers, Bro. Albert, Bro. Oliver, and Mr. Gibson, to whose persevering and patient efforts we owe our success. The little red brick school house on Bartlett St. may not be too boastful about its loutward appearanceg the teaching carried on within its humble walls can't e eat. We thank the Good Lord to have sent us two promising young humorists - they are also referred to as clowns - such as George and Roland. They should, however, have shown a little more respect to a veteran to whom they gave 21 bouncings on his 21st birthday .... A l'automne prochain! We, the green Freshmen of 47-48, can now realize to some extent, if not fully, what the school means to us. Of course, we did not come here simply because our'parents sent us, or because we had to. We came because we liked St. Dom's from the very start, and understood that this is where we belong. One year at St. Dom's has confirmed our expectations and justified our choice. We have learned what the slogan means, All for one, and one for all. Here we have found a family spirit, devotion, and love, here we have had the kind of education we need - with proper emphasis on our moral training. That is the reason why things run so smoothly: that is the reason why we are the largest Freshman class ever to enter St. Dom's! We rejoice in the progress of our dear school. Is there any one who would deny that St. Dom's is progressing? That fellow would be a hopeless case. It would mean that he never reads a paper, that he never converses with people in town, that he is deaf, blind and dumb, with the accent on the last word ..... Why, what others have done in years, we do in months, in weeks .... Now, the progress of the school is a responsibility that rests squarely on your shoulders and mine, even if they are not yet very broad. Wherever we go, whatever we do, the name of St. Dom's is imprinted on our personality. People will make you and me the basis of their judgment! Come on, boys! Let's show them what St. Dom's is doing for us! We should fall on our knees and bow our heads in prayer to express our grati- tude to the Good Lord and His Blessed Mother Who have been so kind to us. Raymond Voyer, '51 It seems to me that it was only yesterday that we walked into St. Dom's School yard for the first time. I can see the principal stepping upon an improvised pedestal and laying down some practical regulations for us. We, the newcomers, felt uneasy and somewhat scared .... As our names were called we filed into the building and went to our classrooms. Poor unfortunate boys! We thought then that' the future was not very bright! It is amazing how quick we lost our shyness .... By the end of the first week we were rushing down to the canteen like hungry wolves .... Incidentally, the canteen period is by far the best loved one! It is at the canteen that we the freshmen try to recuperate every day at 10:45, after a grueling battle with algebra! We also like to rush up the stairs, but at times we meet with an unexpected obstacle. A formidable figure stands with folded arms at the top, and all the excitement seems to cool off under one solemn stare .... We may be terrible children, but our teachers know that, way down in our hearts, we love them very much. We are very grateful for their devotedness, their patience, their love. They may still hope that, with continued efforts, they will make good young men out of us .... joseph Somers, '51- ST. DOM'S BOOSTER CLUB Athletics are well integrated into the American school system, and this is as it should be. The constant demand for physical endurance and mental alert- ness, fair play and cooperation on the part of the athlete highly contribute to the full development of a fine all-around personality in which morals and morale are often found at their best. Sports are also largely beneficial to the whole student body. The victory songs and wild cheering, we should remember, spring from a sense of loyalty and pride which idealizes the Alma Mater in the minds and hearts of the students. From its very beginning, St. Dom's has engaged in a very ambitious athletic program. Remarkable success has been achieved in football, basketball, and baseball, thanks to the expert services of a professional coach, Mr. Richard Gibson. Our hockey team under the able direction of Brothers Leonard and Albert tops the State of Maine honor roll and bids high at the New England hockey Crown. An all-inclusive sports program sometimes creates acute financial problems even for large tax-suppor ted institutions. In a small non tax-supported school, whose budget must of necessity be curtailed to the size of charitable contributions, the athletic program constitutes a crushing burden. A 24-hour shift on the part of certain members of the faculty, thorough backing and cooperation by the student body, the scanty profits of the school canteen can no longer keep St. Dom's sports wagon well-oiled and going. The solution? Well, it was found when a few men of vision and action were told about the problem and met to do something about it. ST. DOM'S BOOST- ERS' CLUB was founded, and what a boost they proved to be! Men of vision and action, we said! Read but the first names on a long list of some 1500: Fr. Drouin, Romeo Forgues, Reggie Cloutier, Don Fortin, Tom Kerrigan, Dr. Paul F ortier, Gene Cloutier, Tony Blanchard, Mayor Gagne, etc. There is no telling how far they will gog but the list of their achievements in the brief four months which have elapsed can give you an idea of what may follow. The Boosters' Club has sent our hockey team to Boston for the New England Tournament - and what a pleasant affair they have made it! They have bought new equipment badly needed for hockey and baseball, they have launched a drive for paper and scrap metal, they have organized a bee to .level the site of the future school for the purpose of laying out a football field: they have paid the transportation of the baseball team. Such have been the Boosters' accom- plishments in the brief four months following their foundation. We can think of but one word to characterize our Boosters: They are FRIENDS! Loyal, devoted, generous, enthusiastic friends. We thank you, Friends! , ,,,Il rlillw I ', :X r Qzlllum 'lillzllllll' t'4a,,,,' xv.-:J A E nf nu, -mmm. Peter. But the lack of instruments and of uniforms prevented it from achieving still greater results. Fortunately, the Exchange Club of Lewiston spontaneously came to the rescue. Under the leadership of Dr. Paul Fortier, a great friend of St. Dom's, the members of the club have launched an enthusiastic campaign which proved very successful. Of course, our own boys were willing to help themselves and they have cooperated in every possible way. At the close of the drive, Dr. Fortier presented Fr. Drouin with a 352,800 cheque. We are very grateful to the Exchange Club for this timely and generous con- tribution. New instruments have already been purchased, and 20 new uniforms are expected shortly. Soon a 40-piece band will be playing the kind of music we like to hear.
