November 25, 1959 THE CREST Page Twenty-three Saint ' The Saint Clement ' The Man Our parish is one big family under the protection of St. Clement, Pope and Martyr. St. Clement, whose feastday is cele- bratedNovember 23 became Pope about the year 91 He governedthe Church nine years and died in the year 100 There is an interesting and for the most part unknown story about his mar tyrdom For destroying the temples of the idols St Clement was arrested An anchor was hung about his neck and he was cast into the sea St Clement s dlsciples standing nearby, prayed that they might see his body At once the sea recededto a distance of three miles and a small house built in the fashion of a marble temple came into view There lay the body of St Clement with the an chor at his side This strange phenome non occurred every year following Barbarians coming at a time when the sea receded destroyed the temple and the saint s body Years later the body with the anchor, was foundburied deep in anisland The relics werethentaken to Rome, andthere the body was enshrined ln the Church which ls now called St Clement Thermometer Bulls Over by Lorraine Markowicz The bright red thermometer in the hall, afamiliar landmark for two weeks has been taken down Pep talks are no more The Patron Sponsor Drive is over for another year The managers of the drive can cease holding their breath St Clement High School surpassed its quota of S3000 by a good S200 margin Eight out of the eleven homerooms inthe high school reached or went beyond, their individual quotas They were 105 Junior homeroom 103 Sophomore homeroom 207 Freshman homerooms 201 202 210 The drive IS now forgotten by most of the students It will, however, last in the minds of those who kept the records and publicized the drive From the be ginmngto the end they prayed for a suc cessful outcome H E C T I C D A Y S What is it like to pilot a subscription drive? The first few days are the most hectic The envelopes seem to be lacking money Panic strikes until you realize the drive is only two days old, and the students haven't quite got into the swing of things Publicity is needed Announce ments are made everyday to keep the students informed on the drive a.nd to SointClemenf Takes To Air Sa.1ntClement s stars of Quiz 'Em' are fseated from leftl Sister Dalmatia, who will help prepare the students appearing on the show Mr Donald Szambelan, and Grace Wiegand, fstandmgfrom leftl Patricia Thebert, Carol Golembiewskl, Lawrence Chmie -ewskl, Janet Lietz, and Gary Houghton create interest As the days go by and the amount of money brought in increases you breathe a sigh of relief When you record the names of the students who brought in patrons and sponsors you realize that these people must think enough of the school and the yearbook to go out and work for it Totaling the results of the drive on the last day is the most thrilling Will we reach our goal? We do' It IS hard to believe at fir st but we reached that quota and went beyond lt' fturn to page 301 mtv Members of Club 60 are those who brought in S50 or more in the Patron Sponsor Drive of 1959 1960 They are the following fseatedfrom leftl Frances Gretz Kathleen Schmidt Joan Traw czynskl, Kathleen Gietzen, Joyce Fix, and Carol Flaim tstandlng from leftl Patricia Galbensky, Gary Vermeersch Carol Martin, and Kathleen Wiengartz On December 19 Ja.net Lietz, Patricia Thebert Gary Houghton, and Lawrence Chmielewski w1lltake part 1n the educa tional television program Quiz 'Em on the Air Faculty member Mr Donald Szambelan and student Grace Wiegand have already participated on this program as Judges, on Saturday November 7 The four seniors will participate for the first time on this program against St Louis l-hgh School 1n Mt Clemens Also attending the show will be principal Sister Eleanore history teacher Sister Dal matia, and alternate panelist Carol Go lembiewskl J U DG E S Along with Grace and Mr Szambelan on the November 7 show were two Judges fromSt Louis High They composedthe panel of Judges between St Catherine and VALUABLE PRIZES This is how the Quiz Em on the Air show operates Quizmaster Carl Cederberg asks the two opposing panels alternate questions on current events read in the Detroit News durmg the five day period pre ceding the telecast Correct answers count 50 points The team with the high est score wins a TV set or atape re corder a H1 F1 record player, or S150 for library books for the school The losing panel gets an AM FM radio or S50 for library books for the school In case of a tie score, atie breaker sta tistical question is asked Remember feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8 J K f l , km?
