1 Me CVM 0 1953: The Graduation of the Class of 1953 has a very happy significance for me. l came to the parish of St. Clement's on July 17, 1940 to become its Parish Priest. ln Sep- tember of that same year lgreeted many of thisGraduating Class who came to school, for the first time, to be enrolled in the Sub-Primary Grade. Thirteen years later, l congratulate you, on Graduation Day, at St. Clement's High School. The delightful promise revealed to me on that first School Day is now fulfilled. Hence, there is a spontaneous and instinctive warmth in my heart for this Class. Through the years, others from many parishes have added to your membership. They have been not only the beneficiaries of the fine tradition you have built but have contributed to its development. Hence, it iswitha very benign and affectionatebless- ing for this Class, that l have the prayerful hope and confidence that you will Go with God and keep as Watchman to your heart the salutary teaching of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Exemplary priest of Godl What a fitting personality for the dedication of the Year Book of the Class of 1953 of Saint Clement's High School, West Somerville. Reverend Jerome P. Gill, born in West Newton and graduated from Boston Col- lege, was ordained a priest at Saint John's Seminary, Brighton in May 1934. After a short curacy at Saint Patrick's Church, Roxbury, he was transferred to Saint Cle- ment's, West Somerville, where he labored faithfully and zealously during the past- orate of the Reverend Thomas F. McCarthy. With developed ability and skilled ease, he taught plain living and high thinking, and encouraged the parishioners to acquire for themselves intelligent self-mastery and self-direction. He seemed to have the unique ability to take simple words and breathe into them charm and potency and so clothe them with immortality. His deep love of country--intensified by chats and correspondence with his brother, a graduate of West Point and now a Colonel stationed at Shape, Paris--prompted FotherGill to enter the United States Navy asa Chaplain with the rank of Lieutenant .g.Q in 1941. He saw active service both in the States and in the South Pacific, and was dischared in 1946 as a Lieutenant Commander. He now holds the rank of Com- mander in the United States Naval Reserve. Following his discharge, Father Gill returned to his duties at Saint Clement's where he is actively engaged as director ofthe Holy Name Society, Holy Name Bowl- ing Team, and the Ushers' Club. Our Annual Parish Reunion bears glowing testimony to the fact that he is a master of management and detail. Father Gill has charge of the Sophomore Religion Classes in our High School. In this role his reasoned arguments and enlivening suggestions for developing a deeper ad- herence to our cherished Catholic Faith will live with us down through the years. In fact, I am sure that even when the hinges of memory have begun to rust, we, his pupils, will turn back affectionately to this Man of God who taught us to look from the greed of earthly pleasure to the desire of heavenly treasure. So, dear Father Gill, from the Class of 1953: Ad Multos Annosl ANNE LOUISE MORRISSEY .5

.911 .xglalorecia fion ln the name of the graduates of 1953, l wish to thank our beloved pastor, Right Reverend Robert P. Barry, LL.D ., for four years of extremely happy school days here at St. Clement's High School. Our life-preparing curriculum, our development in sportsmanship through a varied athletic program, our acquisition of social finesse, and our cultural and intellectual achievements are iust some of the ingredients in our four years of harmony for which Monsignor provided the over-all tone and basic theme. Literally, he wept with us when we wept, and he reioiced with us when we rejoiced. Like John the Baptist, he has taught us with zeal and has led us to Christ. indeed, like Christ himself, his desire has been to be with us, his children to console, to encourage, and to speak the word of praise in our successes. As we leave St. Clement's and face the new horizons of adult life, the bright star oFMonsignor Barry's kindness should keep us everclose to our leader Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. --JOHN STORDY
