A MOTHER'S GOODNIGHT Goodnight, my beloved, may God watch o'er you And keep you, my dearest, through this night of blue, Whatever may happen, fear not, little one, For Mother shall eier watch and guide you, my son! Goodnight oh, my darling, my life and my pride, Since daddy has left us, I'm your only guide. Grow up, oh, my sweetest, to be brave and strong As daddy would have you be, all the day long. Alma B. Ethier, '49. i3iiiii3ii33iiii33 ST. CLARE'S St. Clare's is a symphony! Not merely a band, but a symphony complete and un- abridged. Our four movements are our four high school yearsg our conductor, our prin- cipalg our concert-master, our homeroom teacher, our theme, culture. Our courses correspond to the different symphonic sections. The fundamentals form our string division. The violins sustaining the melody ensemble, English providing the basis for development. In definite and set sounds the violas and cellos ring out accen- tuating the unchanging History and Civics. The commercial branches fashion the brasses. As the trumpet sings in full, round and brilliant tones, shorthand with its efficiency springs to mind. The majestic trombone, seconded by its great range and power, is replaced by the usefulness of type. Our classical subjects are our wood-wind group. From the agile and flexible flute come the clear, liquid notes portraying the complicated but singular intricacies of the Sciences. We hear the oboe singing plaintively of the caprices of Latin. Rich mellow tones flow from the clarinets depicting math's just and accurate terms. The courses which complete our training symbolise the percussion instruments. The clashing cymbals could well represent art's striking combinations of color. The rhythmic drums vividly contrast all the enchantment of music. M. Francoise Tasse, '49.
