Ethier, '49. i3iiiii3ii33iiii33 ST. CLARE'S St. Clare's is a symphony! Not merely a band, but a symphony complete and un- abridged. Our four movements are our four high school yearsg our conductor, our prin- cipalg our concert-master, our homeroom teacher, our theme, culture. Our courses correspond to the different symphonic sections. The fundamentals form our string division. The violins sustaining the melody ensemble, English providing the basis for development. In definite and set sounds the violas and cellos ring out accen- tuating the unchanging History and Civics. The commercial branches fashion the brasses. As the trumpet sings in full, round and brilliant tones, shorthand with its efficiency springs to mind. The majestic trombone, seconded by its great range and power, is replaced by the usefulness of type. Our classical subjects are our wood-wind group. From the agile and flexible flute come the clear, liquid notes portraying the complicated but singular intricacies of the Sciences. We hear the oboe singing plaintively of the caprices of Latin. Rich mellow tones flow from the clarinets depicting math's just and accurate terms. The courses which complete our training symbolise the percussion instruments. The clashing cymbals could well represent art's striking combinations of color. The rhythmic drums vividly contrast all the enchantment of music. M. Francoise Tasse, '49. Morin for individual excellence in the presentation of a project, April 9, 1948. PATRICIA A year of intensive study and research and the making of an exhibit on medicinal plants and drugs made Patricia Morin the winner in the First Science Grant last April. Along with the exhibit, Patsy also made a life-size model of the heart, lungs, intestines and stomach, to show the effect of certain drugs on these organs. The preparation of these models required months of careful work: drawing, coloring and cutting out, then stuffing, and covering with clay. Painstaking labor was also required to set the project in an attractive manner, in the auditorium of Hope High School where the exhibit took place. For the research, Patricia made trips to Boston and Providence to purchase rare drugs. She also spent hours in various libraries, including that of the Rhode Island School of Pharmacy. Patricia was awarded a gold medal along with the First Science Grant. We all admire the initiative and zeal that Patsy has put in her work and we all wish her the greatest success in all her undertakings. With the patience and perseverance that she has shown, we know that she will go far and do much in all that she pledges herself to do. for area high school students yesterday receives. a f ble radio and congrmtuiotifms from Anthony P, Zi? the Wwnsocket Junior Chamber of Commerce, sgonsered the competition. for Democracy pubhg ! c ck. wr R' B' ata mssonette 0? Naturally, their tasks are on a smaller scale, but are, nevertheless, very important. First, let me introduce you to our devoted Pauline Valois who has fulfilled her duty as president and leader very efficiently, besides contributing much of her time to Our Lady's Sodality. Rita Bissonnette, our vice-president, has not only won the admiration of her high school friends for her ready wit and humor, but has won honors in a nationwide public speaking contest: I SPEAK FOR DEMOCRACY. Certainly, Rita is an asset to St. Clare High, and we seniors of 1949 will long remember her success. Next on the list comes Suzanne, our capable secretary, who has been an active member of the Sodality and we can easily apply this little quatrain to Sue: Work! Thank God for the might of it! The ardor, the urge, the delight of itg Work that comes from the heart's desire Setting the soul and the brain on fire. Jacqueline, our treasurer, did not get much practical training in the care of our class fund, however, her initiative should help her along in Whatever business occupation she may choose in the future. Our mistress of ceremonies, Rose-Blanche Guerin, shall be remembered as a staunch friend, a real cheer leader in St. Clare's basketball games, and an Ace in party organiza- tions. To the quintet we extend our admiration and best wishes for their future welfare. . . On parle . . . fc'est un comite de demoisellesj . . . On discute . . The Religious of jesus-Marie and the Class of 1949 are very grateful to their advertisers, the old and the new, and offer their sincere thanks for the generous contributions. Suzanne M. Menard, '49. BARIL, '49 MURIEL R. PLANTE, '49 LOOKING IN AND LOOKING OUT Remember that September day a few years ago? It was the first day of school and we were enrolled as Freshmen at St. Clare's. As we entered the spacious grounds, didn't we gaze with awe at the austere- looking building and wonder what it would be like inside? Then, finally, we knew. We met our teachers, made new friends, and soon grew to look upon the school as our second home. There was never a dull mo- ment. Happiness, vexations, laughter, and tears came as a part of our every day routine. Then, all of a sudden, it was June. With happy hearts we left for a few months of vacation. Then, September again and the Sophomore and Junior years flew by and we found ourselves Seniors. With tear-dimmed eyes we,ll say farewell, and go out into a new world. What it will hold in store for each one of us, we do not know. But this we do know - that whatever path in life we may choose, we will always be proud to be called graduates of St. Clare's',. There will always be in our hearts a place for our beloved Alma Mater. Claire F. Morel, '49. One sunny day in january, I crossed the corridor next to the library. I experi- enced such a queer feeling. I can't de- scribe it. I was lonely for the four dear years spent here. I was already lonely for dear St. Clareis. Everything about it seemed so wonderful and grand. PAULINE Y. VALOIS, 49 During four years we have shared our joys and problems. Now, each of the sixty Forty-Niners will go her way, along the path of her vocation. .
