JE 'Vlh SOUVIEINS Open Letter to the Graduates Dear Graduates As you can easily recall in every classroom we have studied during our four years of high school there was always an inspiring thought written on a blackboard accompanied by a design produced by a skillful hand Ar first they were a novelty and then vye just seemed to take them for granted didn t we Honestly though dont you remember having often been on the verge of breaking the golden rule of silence but upon looking up to an inscription such as Action not words you refrained from talking Of course you do And weren t you spurred on to greater achievements by this slogan Pick out your peak and climb P Or perhaps your favorite was Excelsior ? However didnt you think it strange that there was no slogan in the Senior class when we arrived in September? Personally I thought the room looked quite bare when I saw it for the first time Aside from the crucifix and the statue of the Blessed Virgin there was nothing to captivate the eye Even the pictures of the twenty sux first presidents of our country failed to make an impression on me I-Iovs did you feel about lt? I wonder if you were as disappointed as I was But fortunately I soon recovered from my despondent state for behold there on the left vxall Isn t she the typical l94l student with her cap tilted oyer one eye and fitting snugly over her curls with her graduates gown veorn casually on her fair shoulders and her attractive features resplendent vsith youthful charm and energy? Strange but true girls this picture has inspired me more than any other elevating thought I ever encountered in the classrooms Wheneyer anything went wrong during classes I would look up at the portrait and see that pretty Senior standing over a huge globe with an apparent confidence in her ability to conquer the world a conlidence inspired by her determination to live up to her convictions and to seek Truth in all phases of life Then with reneve ed vigor and ambition I would resume my studies Isn t it a fact that we too figuratively speaking are standing over a globe ready to conquer the world' The years of scholastic training we have received from disinterested and capable educators have prepared us to accept all the ups and downs of this topsy turvy world without shirking or grumbling There are various fields open to our exploration and it is up to us to make the best of the opportunities given us So from now on the motto of the class of 41 shall be Onward to Victory But why not go about it with the optimistlc look and cheerful smile of my little graduate' Your loving classmate PAULIINI VA1o1s 41 +'l34t+ . . - , , .
