JE ME SOUVIENSH Hockey An Eplclemlc In the begmnmg was chaos Then somebody mvented hockey We know not who commltted the crlme but we serlously suspect that If was some flylng Frenchman who skatmg upon a mlrrored lake found a mlmature block batted If across the rce and drove xt mto a somewhat large overturned can No doubt ln th1s epoch makmg shot he skated swlftly a1m1ng the block stralght at the can then stood st1ll for a spllt second and sent lt rattlmg mto the can Over Joyed at hrs flrst attempt he repeated th1s actxon and soon found many com patrlots dolng the same thmg One man trymg to sporl thelr fun stood stxck ln hand 1n front of the can returnmg the block to IIS owners as often as he could Soon afterwards the ponds lakes and rivers were covered with jovlal Frenchmen rn pursult of a flyrng pellet Thus from the start the game galned a strong hold upon the hearts of the people Here at least was somethmg entlrely absolutely and they hoped eternally free Ch1ldren who used to be taught the anclent and honorable custom of w1eld1ng the claymore were now lnstructed rn the art of sendlng the puck as rt was now called past the goalxe 1nto a sort of sem1 net basket about two feet h1gh and plnned to the 1ce Young glrls all trotted down to see thelr best beau make a perfect shot He then became the 1dol of the hour Hockey 1n short became a drsease not a mere sport Need I rel1te how Hockey spread lxke vuldfire from the rock bound coast of lVIa1ne to the Sunny clrmes and fertlle v1neyards of Callfornla? Need I recount the desolatlon th1s tornado has left rn 1tS wake how the cxty pond yeas scraped the rxver prlde of the state skimmed and the audrtorrums all over the state rented all to make room for the hockey players to trlp them Ihe strangest feature of th1s epldemlc IS the fact that nobody no young grrl at least IS Immune from 1ts germ It has enveloped old and young men and women but young women especrally I wonder 1f they are mterested rn the game or ln the players II mean the gxrlsj ' If you happen to attend one of these games you w1ll see bank presxdents governors capltallsts and clty officlals along wrth school boys and glrls all wxth a dazed look upon their faces Heads moye back and forth wxth the puck and rf someone happens to be smoklng you ulll see the ashes tumblmg mto your lap Cigar butts flll the brxm of your hat Iyen peanut shells suffer mlstreatment 'Ihey are bemg bltten 1nto and at tunes swallowed whole If ue face facts nlnety per cent of the hockey players are boyylegged crooked nosed and skull cracked No vxonder Who could suffer such whacks here and there md st1ll remam physlcally perfect, The audlence 1f I may call 1 croyyd of half mad people an audxence has IIS oyyn partlcular defects Sveeet -'I 52 If . . --- X 1 . f I H 4 x , ' ' H v A I V , v .
