Her assistant Librarians help by stamping out books, and keeping the books in order. There are also many reference books that must be kept in good shape. The newspapers and mag- azines are used quite frequently, and they also must be signed out each time they are read. It is the duty of the Li- brarians to help keep the library quiet and orderly, so that the students can go there to find references on authors, com- plete reports, and the many other things students are required to do. Mica, At the beginning of the school year, Mr. Miller chose eight students from the six study halls, to help him in the office. There were two students in the office the first and sixth periods, and one student in the oftice each of the other four per- iods. These students run errands, do typ- ing and mimeographing, answer the telephone and many other oftice duties. They collect the absence slips and eligi- bility sheets. The first semester they took announcements around to each class, but the inter-com system was installed in December, eliminating the announcement duty of the office help. The band under the supervision of their new director, Mr. Hammond, made their regular ap- pearances at the football games with a Drum Major and six snappy Maiorettes proudly leading them down the field to the tune of When the Saints Go Marching In. The music of the band takes on a more seri- ous nature as football season comes to a close. Busily they prepare for their annual spring and winter concerts, and then they immediately make preparations for the district and state contests. St. Clairsville is always commendably repre- sented by the band in these contests. The band and all the other crganizations of the instrumental department such as the Wind En- semble, the Pep Band, and the Dance Band, are supported by a group called the Band Mothers. This group deserves our most sincere apprecia- tion. To Mr. Hammond and the T957-58 band, we extend our congratulations and thanks for a iob well done. Much of the zest and enthusiasm displayed at the pep meet- ings, football games, and basketball games is aroused by the high school Pep Band. This group is made up of talented and devoted musicians who show their loyalty to the school by do- nating their services tothe pep activities. The Pep Band meets for practice twice a week, at noon. The group was organized to in- crease school spirit and inspire confidence in the teams. We ex- press our appreciation for the time and effort the Pep Band spends to help St. C. The 1957 Red Devils fcotball squad com- piled one of the best records in St. Clairs- ville's history. The Red Devils won seven lost one and tied one. Though they faced many obstacles throughout the season, the who could accept defeat as well as victory. From the last half of the 1955 season to the next to the last game of the 1957 season, the Red Devils went through 20 straight games without defeat. Much of the boys' success was due to the fine work of our coaches led by Nick Wasy- lik, the head coach. The line, which worked hard to open holes for the backfield, was boys fought back against all odds. The St. Clairsville basketball team, which lost only two seniors from the un- defeated squad of 1956-57, provided St. C. with another successful and thrilling year of basketball. This year's squad has operated with six lettermen: Clyde Eads, Jim Bradshaw, John Jenkins, Richard Graham, Barry Hess, and Paul Rice. Rounding out the team and showing great promise were juniors Steve Cupps and Glen Baugh, and sophomores Jim Eads, Royce Starks, Tom Jackson, and Denny Evans. Although there was tremendous pressure on the squad and on the new coach, Myles Witchey, they went into each and every game with a fighting and winning spirit. The Cheerleaders of St. Clairsville High School are a group of six girls chosen by certain members of the faculty, the president of the stu- dent council, the senior cheerleaders, and Mrs. Graham, the supervisor. They are responsible for our school sports- manship and spirit. Their yells, supported by the students, give the football and basketball play- ers the urge to fight harder, when they think a battle is lost. This year the cheerleaders have been out- fitted with new uniforms. These are red wool slacks and grey Red-Devil sweaters. We have a fine group of girls to represent our school and we are proud of them. BASEBALL First row, left to right-Jones, Cupps, Hor- vath, Stromski, Barr. Along with this array, a competent group of underclassmen will fill the spaces left by graduation. Training, under the direction ofa new coach, Bill Bos- tancic, will begin in April in crder that the boys will be in top condition for the 1958 season. Having had a fairly good sea- son last year, the boys hope for many vic- tcries again this season. Although disap- pointed after losing in the tournaments at Brookside, perhaps the Devils will be more fortunate on the baseball diamond this year. 5111! One of the least publicized of spring sports, but one of the most demanding in skill, is golf. Our golf team consists of five members including the coach, Mr. Biltz. There are two returning lettermen this year and they are supported by two new addi- tions to the team. St. Clairsville will play such teams as Til- tonsville, Steubenville and New Philadel- phia and will particpate in the O.V.A.C. and the district tournaments. St. Clairsville was runner-up in the district last year and we hope they can do as well this year. Golf is a very fascinating sport and with the potential this team has, it should have a fine season. This sport is a vigorous, highly competitive one, and is an excellent conditioner and a stam- ina builder. Running cross country is one ofthe best ways to get in shape for spring track. The St. C. harriers had a good season this past fall, which was climaxed by a fairly good showing in the district meet at Belmont Hills Country Club.
