Moment by Moment Upon publication of our 1985 St. Clair High School Yearbook, we the editors, would like to thank the many people who contributed unselfishly of both their time and talents. We would especially like to thank our advertisors, staff, and above all, the students who supported the publication of this yearbook. We sincerely hope that you will receive the same sense of satisfaction to read and to treasure this book as we have received in presenting it to you. Co-Editors Mary Campbell Lucy Zimmer 3 Only Yesterday As we look back on 1985, we see a year of personal, political, and athletic triumphs, medical miracles, and artistic achievements. We ' ve chosen a few that we think were some of the most noteworthy events of ' 85. 1. We start off with the Summer Olympics, hosted this year by Los Angeles. The stunning opening ceremonies were only a prelude to the total dominance by the United States of the Games. Capturing the most medals ever in the history of the Olympics, the U.S. put its Olympic heroes on the highest pedestal possible-such heroes as Carl Lewis, Bart Conner, and Greg Louganis. But the darling of the Olympics had to be 16 year old Mary Lou Retton who won the all around gold medal in womens ' gymnastics, a first for the United States. 2. In the movie industry, the years ' top honors go to 24 year old Prince Rogers Nelson. Prince wrote, produced, directed, starred in, and performed a 1 album and semi-autobiographical movie, Purple Rain . The movie and album grossed $100 million and made Prince the most popular performer of 1985. 3. The appointment of a female vice-presidential running mate was the most inspiring political and personal triumph of 1985. Geraldine Ferraro showed guts and determination and although she and Walter Mondale lost the election, her tradition-breaking appointment was a big step toward equality of men and women. 4. There have been, in 1985, an amazing number of medical breakthroughs. One of the most daring and yet promising are the artificial heart transplants. Medical pioneers such as Barney Clark, the first recipient, and William Shroeder who have had the air-driven hearts implanted, have brought a ray of hope to a world where heart disease is a leading killer. 5. This years ' surprise hit was Ghostbusters . The movie, starring Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, and Harold Ramis, grossed millions of dollars and the Ghostbuster craze took off. The logo was seen everywhere from t-shirts to tennis shoes and the popular phrase I ain ' t afraid of no ghost! was coined. 6. We can ' t forget the Tigers who were the heroes of the summer and gave everyone a reason to celebrate as they clinched the World Series title in a battle with the San Diego Padres. It had been 16 years since they had won a World Series and Detroit went wild with joy over it. Tiger fans showed their appreciation to their heroes with the Wave and the saying of the year, Bless You Boys! Inigo Juan Gonzalez Bastida is 17 and came to St. Clair from Donostia, San Sebastian, Spain. He lives there with his parents, one brother Esteban, 22, and one sister Virginia, 23. While in St. Clair, he lives with Mr. and Mrs. Dudzinski. Inigo ' s hobbies are reading, music, skiing, and cycling. In America, he finds that people enjoy one sport, whereas in his country, people enjoy many sports. He finds that the main differences between America and Spain are the drinking age (there isn ' t one in Spain) and the driving age, which in Spain is 18. When Inigo returns to his country, he plans on majoring in economics. Neighbors Gaby Harms, age 17, is from Hamburg, West Germany. She lives there in an apartment (shown) with her parents and her brother, Kay, age 19. During her stay in St. Clair she is living with Dave and Carol Sheets. Gaby has many hobbies, among these are knitting, reading, dancing, and basketball. What she likes most about America is the space; everyone has their own house and the schools have enough room for things like pools, football fields, and tennis courts. There are many differences between our country and Germany and Gaby lists some of these as the driving age (in Germany it ' s 18), the public transportation (in her country it ' s a much more popular way to get around), and the weather (not so many very warm or very cold days). When Gaby returns to Hamburg she has three more years of high school left to complete after which she will go on to study Foreign Languages. Roberto Buere Wazen Jr. is age 17 and came to St. Clair from Rio de Janiero, Brazil where he lives with his parents, his brother Fernando, 16, and his sister Ana Maria, age 21. During his stay here he lives with Willi Ebersole. Roberto ' s favorite hobby is soccer and he likes America for its technology advantage over Brazil. Roberto explains that the weather is the main difference between the U.S. and Brazil. When Roberto finishes high school he plans on going into agriculture. 7 Lars Drescher is 16 and came to St. Clair from Aarhus, Denmark where he lives with his parents, a brother, Peter, 24, and two sisters, Karen, 21, and Lise, 19. While in America he lives with Mr. and Mrs. Tim Zobl . Lars ' hobbies are swimming, chess, scouting, music, and parties. Lars likes the driving age in the U.S.; in Denmark it is 18, as in most European countries. He finds that the schools in the U.S. and Denmark are much different. In his country, the teachers change classes, not the students. When Lars returns to Denmark he will have three more years of high school left to complete. Francisco Javier Simon Barallorbre is 16 and came from Betanzos, Spain where he lives with his parents, and three brothers, Antonio, 19, Juan, 18, and Miguel, 15. While in St. Clair he ' s staying with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Zobl. Javier has many hobbies, among these are taking pictures, riding bicycles, listening to music, and spending time with his friends. Javier likes American schools because of the many different clubs and after school activities that are available. He also likes American television, except for all the commercials. He finds that the difference between our two countries is the space. In Spain, things are much closer and easier to get to. When Javier returns to his country, he will have one more year of school and then will go on to study at a university. 8 •oPA .43 v ° , a .op c v. , P ' 4P c? a .0 ° c PP , .,0 c£ 0 s o ? And they do! To Crestview, Fourth World in the Goolagong System, ruled by George Topax and guarded by the Great Space Pandas. After a slow start, the boys won 17 of their last 20 games and went on to take second place in the SCAL. In the District tournament, the Saints came out as District Champs after beating Marine City in an exciting and extremely close game 61-59. The Saints then went on to the Regional Semi-finals in Oxford. They defeated Ortonville- Brandon 64-59 and qualified for the Class B Regionals against Flint Beecher, the 1 ranked Class B school in the state. This was the first appearance for the Saints in the Regionals since 1937. The Saints were defeated by the Bucs in the finals. Coach Monte was extremely proud of his fighting Saints this year and was well pleased with the performances of Seniors Denny Askew and Jeff Kaczperski, and Juniors Bret Likins, Tom Groff, and Rodney Glassnor. St. Clair High School was proud on November 28, 19C4 when Tracy- Shaw was crowned Miss Michigan Teen 1985. Tracy was introduced to the pageant by her modeling agency, so she and Gena Groff, also belonging to the agency, decided to enter. In the pageant, held in Southfield, Gena placed third in the finals and received the Most Photogenic award. Tracy received as her first place prize, $100, gift certificates for stores in the Detroit area, free composite shooting and acting lessons, and an all expense paid trip to Miami, Florida for the Miss USA Teen competi tion . Tracy left for Florida on January 2, 1985 and was there for three weeks. During those weeks, she visited many sights in the Miami area, met famous people connected with the pageant, and worked very hard at rehearsal. The pageant was telecast live on January 22, 1985 in four countries. Tracy did not make it to the final competition, but she came back from Florida with many fond memories, new friends — among those, her roommate. Miss Louisiana, Julie Scimeca — and many more prizes. Among those were $300, a Minolta Disc camera, a years ' supply of Maybelline makeup, and all the clothes she wore on television. For the rest of her reign, Tracy will appear at many functions around the state and will be a judge for the Miss Michigan USA pageant or the next Miss Michigan Teen USA pageant. The Great Moment David Toma was a Newark, New Jersey, policeman for almost 20 years. As a detective with the vice, narcotics and gambling divisions of the Newark Police Force, Toma made over 7,000 arrests, resulting in a conviction rate of 98%. Toma ' s personal addiction to drugs and his subsequent recovery led him to begin talking to high school students about drug abuse in 1961. For the next 10 years, Toma lectured to kids on his time off and tried to get his story and his views on the enormous problem of drug abuse published. Finally Toma succeeded in getting Hollywood interested in his story, which resulted in the television series Baretta , based on his life as a cop. Toma has spoken to students about alcohol and drug abuse all over the United States with dramatic results. On February 26, 1985, we had the privilege of listening to one of his stunning lectures. On February 23, 1985, five of the St. Clair High School students traveled to the St. Clair County Community College to compete in our high school 1 s f i rst annual High School Quiz Bowl of the 28th Senate Di strict. Too often academics do not get the attention and reward that other activities receive. This event is designed to focus attention on excellence in the classroom and reward those students who will be our leaders in future years. LeAnn Corkins, Andrea Hyslop, Barb Light, Ron Lovett, and Gerrow Mason competed against 17 other schools and earned themselves third place, each receiving a bronze medal . ♦ A HAGEN ' S HARDWARE VILLAGE GREEN SHOPPING CENTER Marysville, MI 364-8055 DAVID H. Supplying functional coatings for the Automotive Industry “When you see plastic headlamps, think of us.” The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood. And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair. And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-- I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. By Robert Frost
