Your yearbook staff has designated this as the Year of the Elephant. Early in the school year the elephant jokes began, and they grew more ridiculous as the year progressed. That is not our only reason for choosing Ellie” as our symbol this year, however. The elephant is noted for his long memory, and we feel that the 1963- 1964 school year will live in memory as long as there are any of us to remember. The first big dance of the year was the Junior Prom. Soft, blue lights shone on a central wishi ng well as couples danced to the theme music, Blue Velvet. Who will ever forget sitting in classes in stunned silence on November 22, 1963 when President Kennedy’s assassination was announced? We watched with a mixture of awe and pride as our democratic government continued to function smoothly with a new president, Lyndon B. Johnson, even as President Kennedy ' s funeral procession marched slowly to Arlington Cemetery. The Christmas Dance, sponsored this year by the Sophomore Class, had a pictur- esque, old-fashioned sleigh as its central decorative theme, and the hall in front of the main office had been converted to a comfortable lounge highlighted by a glow- ing, ten- foot Christmas tree. The Senior play this year was The Night of January Sixteenth. The Junior Class presented the comedy Stuck Pot . Early in May the Freshman Class presented their annual dance. The multi- purpose room was decorated with spring flowers. On May tenth the Seniors left for their annual, educational (?) trip to Washington. The days that followed were crowded with exams and festivities including the gala Senior Prom which was held in the Blue Water Room of the Y.M.C.A. in Port Huron. It was, indeed a night in Shangri-La. Suddenly it was graduation with the seniors marching solemnly up the aisle in their caps and gowns, each wondering what the future would bring. This year not only the seniors parted company with S.C.H.S. We also lost two teachers who retired. Mrs. Beulah Logsdon taught Latin and English at St. Clair for fourteen years. She sponsored the Latin Club. Miss Mildred Travis came to St. Clair in 1925. Thirty-nine years later she has decided that she’d like to do something else for a change. Like rest. And travel. We ' ll miss her. She was founder of the St. Clair Chapter of the National Honor Society; so this year, in an impressive ceremony, the chapter was renamed for her. Last September this school year seemed to stretch out endlessly, now it is all over, all too soon. Thanks for the memories, Miss Travis Mrs. Logsdon
