Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1964 volume:

CiAirvoymt 196il Your yearbook staff has designated this as the Year of the Elephant. Early in the school year the elephant jokes began, and they grew more ridiculous as the year progressed. That is not our only reason for choosing Ellie” as our symbol this year, however. The elephant is noted for his long memory, and we feel that the 1963- 1964 school year will live in memory as long as there are any of us to remember. The first big dance of the year was the Junior Prom. Soft, blue lights shone on a central wishi ng well as couples danced to the theme music, Blue Velvet. Who will ever forget sitting in classes in stunned silence on November 22, 1963 when President Kennedy’s assassination was announced? We watched with a mixture of awe and pride as our democratic government continued to function smoothly with a new president, Lyndon B. Johnson, even as President Kennedy ' s funeral procession marched slowly to Arlington Cemetery. The Christmas Dance, sponsored this year by the Sophomore Class, had a pictur- esque, old-fashioned sleigh as its central decorative theme, and the hall in front of the main office had been converted to a comfortable lounge highlighted by a glow- ing, ten- foot Christmas tree. The Senior play this year was The Night of January Sixteenth. The Junior Class presented the comedy Stuck Pot . Early in May the Freshman Class presented their annual dance. The multi- purpose room was decorated with spring flowers. On May tenth the Seniors left for their annual, educational (?) trip to Washington. The days that followed were crowded with exams and festivities including the gala Senior Prom which was held in the Blue Water Room of the Y.M.C.A. in Port Huron. It was, indeed a night in Shangri-La. Suddenly it was graduation with the seniors marching solemnly up the aisle in their caps and gowns, each wondering what the future would bring. This year not only the seniors parted company with S.C.H.S. We also lost two teachers who retired. Mrs. Beulah Logsdon taught Latin and English at St. Clair for fourteen years. She sponsored the Latin Club. Miss Mildred Travis came to St. Clair in 1925. Thirty-nine years later she has decided that she’d like to do something else for a change. Like rest. And travel. We ' ll miss her. She was founder of the St. Clair Chapter of the National Honor Society; so this year, in an impressive ceremony, the chapter was renamed for her. Last September this school year seemed to stretch out endlessly, now it is all over, all too soon. Thanks for the memories, Miss Travis Mrs. Logsdon VedicAtion This year ' s Clairvoyant is dedicated to Miss Janice Moran, counselor at Saint Clair High School of the past ten years. ; Miss Janice Moran A former teacher of Business Education, Miss Moran was born in Grindstone City but now calls St. Clair ’’home. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Central Michigan University and her Master of Arts degree in guidance from the University of Michigan. She has served as a class advisor and has worked untiringly as Student Council ad- visor for many years. Miss Moran is a willing listener, coun- selor, and friend. Her office door is always open to any student who wishes to discuss a scheduling, classroom, or personal problem with her. 3 Top row left to right: Mr. Alley, Mr. Anderson, Mr. Barber; Second row; Mr. Bohs, Mr. Buell, Mr. Clark; Third row: Mrs. Cornish, Mr. Cornish, Mr. Dunham, Miss Fritz, Mr. Godwin; Fourth row: Mrs. Horning, Mr. Huston, Mr. Hyatt, Mr. Irvin, Mr. Komph. Right- Marg on a typical school day in the U.S. a a j j Sonja Margareta Lowgren of Arvika, Sweden, was born November 11. 1946 in Srvika. Her father is a teacher and a counselor, and her mother is a homemaker. She attended a public school in Srvika for the first grade through the fourth grade. From fifth through the ninth grade she attended a grammar school in her town. The year before she left she attended the gymnasium, which is equivalent to our Junior College. She still has two more years when she goes back before she will graduate from the gymnasium. In America, her friends fondly call her Swede or Marg or Maggie. We’ll miss you next year, Margareta. Amen - 1964 As we bring our high school days to a close, we wish to recall for you some of the events that made the ’’Class of 1964” one that will always be remembered. On September 6, 1961, 138 frightened Freshmen entered St. Clair High School to embark upon four years of education (and mischief!). As the months wore on, the fear was replaced by the anticipation of the years to come. Will we ever forget those famous classes— Civics, General Business, and Orientation? If we recall correctly, it was about this time that a certain Frank Goethals seemed to be the ’’man of the hour,” first with Gloria Schweihofer and then with Donna Hudolin. Frank always did have good taste. Sheila Sayers was our representative to the Homecoming Court. We closed our fabulous Freshman year with the annual May Dance which will always be remembered for its tin foil. Fred Shaw and Ruth Ann Ross were our King and Queen. Wedding bells are in their future. We opened our stupendous Sophomore year with 127 ambitious (?) students. We were now a year older and a year wiser to the ways of St. Clair High. This years Homecoming Court saw Donna Hudolin as our representative. This year showed a de- crease in our class roll. An unfortunate incident was the sad death of our classmate, Randy McCullough, whom we will always remember. The Sophomore class was among those who brightened the halls of the newly built high school. The highlight of the Christmas season was ’’Peppermint Christmas,” another successful accomplishment of the Class of ’64. Was it Charleen who was seen with Bob Pauly and then Don Anderson? Around this time Judy Stacey was wiping her tears for Mike on Les Hasler ' s handkerchief. A new boy (could it be Jae?) became the talk of the class. Many girls were vying for his affections but a certain Florrie was his first choice. The close of the year brought Cupid’s arrows upon Bill and Jeannette, Don M. and Carole, and Tom S. and Bev. As we entered our Junior year, we saw before us a barage of activities. Anna Jo Scott and Sue Foltanovich added a spark of beauty as our chosen candidates to the Homecoming of 1963. In November one of our classmates, Jim Cheadle, died of leukemia. January brought the selection of exchange students to Canada. Our first prom, ’’Evening in Paris,” was a special event for many Juniors (eh Don M.). Party dresses and corsages, dad ' s car and a later curfew were all part of this special night. Sheila and Jae had now established themselves as a permanent couple along with Rick and Sue, Les and Judy, Don A. and Carol, and Don M. and Sue. Proof of our high scholastic achievement were the many honors bestowed upon members of the Junior class at Honors Convocation. As we bid farewell to the Class of 1963, we the Class of 1964 looked ahead to the climax of our high school career. Here now are a few of the many memorable events that made our Senior year an unforgetable one. ’’Uncle John” broke Lynn Woodard’s absentee record by a score of ten days. Patsy Burkhart reigned beautifully over the Homecoming festivities as St. Clair’s Queen of 1964 with Sue Foltanovich, Donna Hudolin, and Margareta Lowgren as members of her court. Our football team was very successful with the aid of the Senior boys, three of whom placed on the all county team. These boys were Larry Marvin, Jae Shobbrook, and Dee Boulier. Christmas at St. Clair High was a little merrier with the help of the Senior Boy’s Choir. We’re still not sure whether they caused or cured a few ulcers. The importance of scholastic leadership was brought to the limelight as Kathy Distelrath and Cindy Dixon were named valedictorian and salutatorian of the Senior Class. Another important award, that of the ’’Homemaker of Tomorrow” was bestowed upon Sheila Sayers. As Easter approached, the hearts of six Senior boys were lifted as they set off for Florida. We’re sure they have some memories! ! The May Dance found Sheila and Jae as king and queen. We also know that Canada holds a special place in the memories of Dyanna and John. The climax of the year, the Senior trip (or otherwise known as mix and match time), was the event which found the ties of friendship for the Senior class. The observation car seemed to be in use by quite a few, especially— Gloria and Tony, Mary Kay and Glenn, Sue and Rick, Judy and Les, Nanc y and Tom, Donna and Leo, Sheila and Jae, Travis and Sam, and Bob F. and two certain someones. That was the week that was! And the memories will always remain. Oh— we forgot another couple— Leo and the Dolphin. Those who stayed behind had a special week of camping. They appeared in their ’’formal attire” to greet us on Friday. Cindy Dixon couldn’t make up her mind between Bob P. and Joe E. The latter finally won her. Kathy D. and Joe N. and Bev M. and Hank O. became twosomes. The highlight of the year, the Senior Prom, has been ac- claimed the best one ever. For Jae, Les, and Don there were even souveniers— proms can be quite expensive! We can’t forget the experiences and fun we’ve had with the one and only Swede.” We’re going to miss her and hope that she has enjoyed having us as schoolmates as much as we’ve enjoyed her friendship. We hope we have become a small part of her memory for she will always be a part of ours. Well, Seniors, the time has come when the future holds many different paths for each of us to follow. Our wonderful days at SCHS have ended and in five years we can only hope to remain as close as we are now. Farewell mighty Seniors of 1964— the greatest ever! P.S.
