Clairvoyant St. Cl air Higfi ScHool 1963 1863 Over one hundred years ago, in 1858, the Little Red School House, known officially as the St. Clair Public School, was opened at the corner of Third and Mulberry Streets. In 1863 a high school building was built where the intermediate school now stands. It ac- commodated five hundred students, and it cost about six thousand dollars. The Second Ward School was built in 1880 to house the growing student population. It was there, in 1887, that the American flag was flown for what is believed to be the first time over any school in the United States. 1880 By the time a new high school was built in 1922 at a cost of over $325,000 it was desper- ately needed. The building is now being used as an intermediate school. The year 1961 was an important one for our district. In the early part of the year the St. Clair School District voted to become a part of the East China School District, and in November of the same year, our new high school, which cost over one million dollars was dedicated. Our district has increased in size and population, but our goals remain the same as those of the first class to graduate from the Little Red School so long ago. We want to work hard, play hard, and be proud of our school. 1922 1961 Dear Friends, Remember the fun that we had in in the school year of 1962-63? Well, we ' re here to refresh your memory! Let’s turn the clock back to the very first day, September 4, 1962... Recall that bewildering moment when you arrived at school with a gigantic stack of books, and no place to turn? The rest of the week was just as frustrating! So, here are the high, and hi- larious, points of the year as re- corded in our diary: First day: We met Benita Mathilde Elisabeth von Bonin; called ’’ Bennie -Ba be; ” our exchange student from Harderwyken- burg, Leer, West Germany. She was born on September 17, 1944 in Geiglitz, Pomerania. In 1945, the family fled to West Germany where her father works as a merchant of lumber. 2 ’’Benny ' s extra leg” Benita Benita attended the People ' s School in Leer for the First grade through the Fourth grade. From the Fifth to the Twelfth grade she attended the Gymnasium, Teletta- Grofs-Schule in Leer. She will graduate after the Thirteenth grade in March, 1964. In the future she will attend Hamburg University to study Psychology (subject to change). She is interested in Social work. When asked what she liked best about America, she replied, Sweatshirts, I love them. At noon ... at the Prom ... and in the classroom. Next, we met out teachers and the rest of the student body... 3 Mr. Bengtson Mr. Blossom, Principal Mr. Bohs Mr. Cornish Mr. Godwin Miss Fritz Mr. Hyatt Mr. Irvin Mrs. Logsdon Mrs. Lutz Mrs. Paajanen Mrs. Snyder Mr. Stablein Miss Travis Mrs. VanDam Mr. VanDeusen Mr. Weber Custodians: Mrs. Wana- maker, Mrs. Thompson, Mr. Lane, Mr. Schwartz, Mr. Bryson, and Mr. Klaski. Jim Cheadle was a Junior (the class of ' 64) when Parkin- son disease struck him. That led to Luekemia and a long stay in the University Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was home every now and then, but the staff in Ann Arbor kept his bed warm. If he was an example of how strong the Junior class is, then it’s a strong class, because he was supposed to have given in long before he did. Finally he couldn’t fight any longer and the day before Thanksgiving, he left this world for another. The entire Cornish family, including Mrs. Cornish, Mary Lynn, Cynthia Ann, Janet Sue, and Jeffrey William, have been an asset to our community. Mrs. Cornish has been a teacher and is a talented designer. Mr. Cornish is superintendent of the Sunday School at the Congre- gational Church, and he is a member of the Ameri- can Heritage Foundation, National Geographic Soci- ety, and the Society of the First Division. He is a veteran of World War II, having served with the First Infantry Division in Europe. After participating in five campaigns, Mr. Cornish was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement against the enemy. As a teacher of history, government, and sociolo- gy, Uncle John has helped us to see ourselves as necessary individuals working together to form a democratic society. We are proud to dedicate the 1962-63 Clairvoyant to John Cornish. 61 Bottom row, Judy English and Sue Trumble; Standing, L. to R; Pat Eggers, Jo Ann Patter- son, Kathy Wills, Ruth Ann Ross, Shirley Theison, and Patsy Burkhart Reserve Bottom row, L. to R.
