HN CLAIRVOYANT ST. CLAIR HICH SCHOOL Dedication This year we dedicate the Clairvoyant to Carl William Eggers, who has done much to further the musical interests in this high school since his arrival in September of 1942. Mr. Eggers was born and raised in Marquette, Michigan, and graduated from Northern Michigan College of Education in 1936. Before coming to St. Clair, he taught at St. Ignace and Litchfield. Besides leading the beginners ' , elementary, junior high and senior high bands to a high degree of excellence, he also teaches World History and has taught U. S. Government and Social Studies. The bands, under his direction, have participated in many parades, festivals, summer band sessions, and have served at various other functions. At present Mr. Eggers is a senior class advisor and is president of the Faculty Club. He has also served his com- munity by working on many civic committees. The track squad performed well considering the size of the team. Generally 12-14 competed against 30-50 from other teams. Next year better facilities should bring out more interest in track. May we borrow some tranquilizers? Senior Trip Senior Trip -- Miss Travis Long ago, in days departed, On the shores of a great river Rose a village known as Palamer That in time became a city, From the river took its title And was known from the day forward, Known and widely famed as St. Clair. Then the worthy city fathers, Lest their offspring lack in wisdom, Built a high school for their children That they might increase in knowledge Not alone of things around them, But of the great world beyond them, Far beyond their range of vision. Widely known became that high school, Widely known and still remains For the beauty of its juniors, Handsome lads and winsome lasses, For the wisdom of its seniors, Eager seekers they for knowledge, Widely known and still remains so for the patience of its faculty, Dealing with such wit and beauty. Seeking still their children ' s welfare, Said the worthy city fathers ’’Let us send each year to Washington, Certain of our would-be graduates, Send them to the Nation ' s Capital, Let them see those hoary buildings Where our laws are all enacted, Let them climb those stairs, stairs, and more stairs, Of the towering Washington Monument, View from it the far-flung city. ’’And with them to guard their footsteps Let us send courageous teachers, Teachers with strong constitutions, Teachers who have nerves of iron Able to endure the antice Of our too ebullient offspring.” So they planned and so enacted , Sent the first class on to Washington Sent in ' 29 the first class, Sent a class each year thereafter, Save when war the program cancelled. Swiftly passed the immutable seasons, Came the spring of one -and- sixty, Seventy seniors from two busses Waved good-by to friends and families, Left behind them smiling parents Grateful for a week ' s vacation, Left behind them charming girl friends, Margaret Welser, Linda Carman, In whose hearts did Gene and Jerry Fondly trust they reigned unrivaled (’’Fondly” you may know means ’’foolishly” In the older dictionaries!) But their tears and protestations Of true love and deathless loyalty Sent our heroes blithely eastward, There to seek for new thrills on The Blueberry Hills of Washington. With them on the crowed busses Rode their tried and trusty ch aperones, Rhode two sharp and lynx-eyed females Who from Jerry Hutkowski ' s pocket Later took two shiny squirt guns, E ' en though Jerry protested ignorance, Swore he never knew he had ’em , Swore he knew not how they got there, Swore he knew not where they came from Though Bob Kozloff could have told him! And to aid these doughty females Went two stalwart, handsome hemales, Uncle Ron and Uncle Chucky-- So the affectionate seniors named them, Bidding them good-night wiht. . . er, As fond good-night the bade them. Theirs the task and theirs the duty, Senior lads to guard from evils Such as meet the untried traveller When he starts upon a journey. Cards they frowned on, and encouraged Hours of deep and healthful slumber That the seniors might be ready For the strenuous days before them. Though they live to be a hundred, Never will those upper classmen Memories lack to cheer and cherish: How they showered one gruesome twosome, Pennies fairly rained upon them, Showing thus their appreciation Of the gently art of ’’smooching” Which the two were demonstrating. How the lithe and agile ’’Sugar” Footed it upon the dance floor, Tired even the tireless Lana As they practised jitterbugging. How they rode the roller coaster, Martha Welser and Don Bacon, Till with faces green and ghastly Once more trod they terra firma. How two venturesome advisors Rode the Mad Mouse and decided That such sport befit no longer Men of their staidage and dignity, Such a sport were better suited To the young and giddy seniors. How Charles Parker at the night club Sat enthralled with mouth wide open, ’’What is this that Tv been missing? Where has this been all my lifetime?” You could almost hear him wonder As he watched that gorgeous damsil Glide and posture on the dance floor With the floodlights shinging over her. How poor Starkey, broke and weary, Nearly dead from want of slumber, And for once forsaking Judy, Sought her two advisors pleading For a chance to stretch his long length There beside them in the train aisle Where there would be peace and quite Which he found not in the boys coach. How Sue Cobourn and her buddies Snared three smart and snazzy strangers, Lured them till they danced attendance, Squired them upon the boat cruse, And they were ’’the most” the girls said When the experience they related To their encious sisters later In the post-cruise, pre-bed session E’er the chaperoned knocked for bed-check. When the dread hour of departure Threw its shadow o ' er the seniors, ’’Salty” tears the senior girls shed At the thought of leaving that guy To the mercies of new seniors Who in turn would take their places In his variable affections. Lest the Ambassador should forg Left behind them, the advisors Two good swim suits as a token Of the pleasant hours they’d spent Carried with them, absent minded, One hotel key and the camera Uncle Ron had two times mislaid Since the B O near lost him, Made him spurt to catch the last coac And be boosted on by Cotten , As it pulled out of the statein On that now-so- long-past Sunday When the seniors left for Washington. Pleasant was the journey homeward Save for those who most unwisely Had indulged in food and folly. ’’Pass the Pepto Bismuth,” wailed they When those over -tortured stomachs Protest made unto their owners. ' Twas a cure for ills innumerable In the hands of Mrs. Snyder. When they reached their destination, All the school turned out to great him. Touching then were the reunions! In Reed ' s eyes the tears of joy stood, When at long last there beheld he Mary Ellen, smiling at him, There amid the welcoming students. So we end the Senior Saga, Glad we are once more to welcome Safely home the wandering infants, And as Faculty we hope that, When next year rolls around this season, We’ll be welcoming home the Juniors From a trip as satisfying. Date Bureau The finger painter strikes again! You’re wrong, Joel Research 83 The Visit of Mr. Qureshi Yaseen M. Qureshi as almost everyone knows came to St. Clair January 6, 1961 from his native country, West Pakistan. Before coming here he attended an orientation course at Wash- ingt on D. C. and visited the Grand Canyon and various places in California. After leaving California he came to Lansing, Michigan where our Superintendent, Mr. Milliken met him and brought him here where he stayed for a month. On January 9th the Student Council held an assembly to welcome him to our school. He gave a brief speech accepting the welcome, the students responded with utmost respect and enthusiam. From that time he seemed never to tire of talking to classes, clubs and civic groups. In addition to visiting the St. Clair Schools he also visited Marysville, Adair and Jones Schools and 4-H Clubs and Scout Troops. He attended tours of such places as Diamond Crystal, Detroit Edison, at St. Clair, and Ford Sterling Plant, Detroit, and he also went ice fishing on Anchor Bay with much success. While in St. Clair, he stayed at the St. Clair Inn, and for a week each, at the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gliem, Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Moore, and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Dodd, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Edmonson and Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Milliken, where he observed how different American Families actually live. He found Americans a busy people during work- ing hours, but after business hours they became people who enjoyed life to the fullest. While in St. Clair he never felt as if he were a foreigner because everyone took time to speak to him and make him feel at home. He was surprised by the freedom of children to express ideas and opinions, and by the informality of the people as well as the cordiality, friendliness and love of the American people for everyone. One example of the friendliness shown him was while staying at the Inn a man and his wife who were celebrating their thirteenth wedding anniver- sary, after talking with him, invited him to their home in Inkster, Michigan. They made two trips to St. Clair and back for him. It impressed him very much that they should go so far out of the way for him, a stranger. Another incident that impressed him occured when he decided to walk from the school to the Post Office. He was stopped five times by both adults and students offering him a ride. One of the most enjoyable incidents of his stay was when Mr. and Mrs. Milliken arranged for a telephone call between him and his wife in West Pakistan at their own expense. While here Mr. Qureshi not only gained a favorable impression of the American people, but also gave the people of St. Clair a most favorable impression of foreigners. Everyone was impressed by his thorough under- standing of almost any subject. Usually when speaking before a group he would give a brief talk and then ask for questions. Whether the question concerned religion, politics, schools, or people he had complete answers ready to give. His earnestness, intelligence, friendliness and eagerness to learn about us made everyone love and respect him even on the first meeting. He said he was honored to come to the United States and to St. Clair, but Clair was even more honored to have him here. It is certain no one in St. Clair will ever forget his visit. His open friendly manner seemed always to bring out the very best in people who came into contact with him. Asa small gesture of our appreciation he was pdresented with an Olympia Portable Typewriter at a farewell assembly on Feb. 9th. When he left the entire town and student body felt a great loss and it is certain that Mr. Qureshi, although he was anxious to return to his family, was sorry to leave our ' litte village 1 as he called it. 84 Left to right Mr. Milliken; Mr. Blossom; Mr. Yaseen M.
