Senior Class Hisfory We, the Class of 1953, began our high school journey in September of 1950. Gul' sophomore year was launched by a class meeting at which we chose our class flower, motto, and colors. Gfficers were chosen whom we, the members of the class, consid- ered to show a sense of leadership. Our class began to participate in school and extra-curricular activities. Some of our fellow students received recognition in ath- letics, others for fine scholarship and club activities. The highlight of our sophomore year was a skating party at Dream City Park which afforded recreation for us as well as the other classes. On December 25, 1951, we held the traditional Junior Prom. Under a canopy of maroon and white streamers we danced to the music of Horace Richards and his orchestra. The auditorium was banked with glittering Christmas trees and ever- greens. This, our Senior year, marks the height of our achievement in high school. On Thanksgiving, the Senior Hop provided entertainment for everyone. Dancing under a myriad of silver stars, we enjoyed the music of Charley Edwards. Our magazine campaign provided the necessary funds for graduation. As we look back upon our years at Saint Clair High School, We feel confident that the training and guidance we have received have prepared us for a successful future. As We bid farewell to our Alma Mater, we wish to express our gratitude for the important part it has played in developing our education and furthering our goals. -111,- SUZANNE J. We're grateful to our teachers true, Whose guidance we do praise, Our work is done, our goal is won, Our hearts to thee we raise. Dear Saint Clair High, it's with a sigh We take our leave of thee, As we embark to leave our mark For everyone to see. You've done your part, and in our hearts We'll always hold thee near, And we'll not let ourselves forget Our Alma Mater dear. -Words by NANCY SYMONS, JOHN SMITH, MARY ANN Ports, PATRICIA SLIVINSKY, JOSEPH HALUSKA, MICHAEL MAcoLA. It is one of our most active organizations, and supervises school activities. In December, Council sponsored the placing of Christmas decorations in the halls. On February 16 and April 15, Council held free dances with Horace Richards and his orchestra providing the music. Light committees were organized to turn lights on while classes are passing and off when the halls were cleared. This was an effort to conserve electricity. Senior awards were made on Class Night to members of the graduating class who have served on the Council. Primary elections for President and Vice-President for the 1952-'53 term were held in April. General elections were held in May. President Ann Collihan and her capable assistants have done an excellent job this year. The Senior Class takes this opportunity to express its congratulations and continued success of future Stu- dent Councils. ,-52,-. Against highly favored Minersville the winning touchdown was recalled, and the Cass game was lost only by the margin of the extra points. ' The highlight of the season was the 19-6 victory over Mahaiioy Township, the Saints being the only team to defeat them all year. Ashland was beaten for the first time in ten years, and Frackville, West Mahanoy Township, and Gilberton were trounced decisively. Co-Captain and Fullback Bill Covach led the team in scoring with 36 points, while Dave Gould and Paul Lewis completed a fine backfield. The line was anchored by Tackle Frank Homa, Center Sam Garland, and Covach who played defensive guard. All three boys played in the Dream Game and will be sorely missed. They lost only one game during the regular season, to Ashland, on seven unearned runs in the fifth inning. They made up for this with a thrilling 3-2 decision over the Black Diamonds in the game that clinched the pennant. The spirit of the team was excellent. They never gave up, and won several games in the late innings by making the right plays at the right time. Notable examples were the East Maharioy and West Mahanoy home games. The Saints won the former on a steal of home by Bob Androshick with two out and two strikes on the batter. They triumphed in the latter when 'Russ Plasha tied the game with a hit followed by an error with two out and two strikes on him in the seventhg and Sam Garland won it with a double, two out and two strikes on him in the eighth. The team showed their alertness on the base paths by effecting five suc- cessful steals of home. Bob Androshick,'third.baseman, and Frank James, centerfielder, were the top hitters, post- ing marks of .405 and 388, respectively. Androshick also led in slugging and James in total bases, while First Baseman Al Mikalauskas scored the most runs. But the real strength of the team lay in the pitching staff. The opposition scored only eleven earned runs during sixteen league games. There was little to choose between the big three of Jack Plachko, Ray McCarthy, and Ron Verchick. All of them had more strikeouts than innings pitched, and turned in excellent earned-run averages, led by Plachkols .039. The staff turned in five shutouts, and both Plachko and Verchick fashioned one-hitters. Seldom does a high school pitching corps excel in both quality and quantity as the 1952 stall did. Although only three of the regulars will return, all of the reserves, most of whom did very well in their brief appearances, will be back, and so another good team is hoped for in the coming season. Faced with a very still exhibition schedule, they lost their first seven games. An exciting 54-52 victory over highly-rated East Mahanoy Township put the Saints on the vic- tory trail, and they played .500 ball for the rest of the season, finishing in fifth place in the North Schuylkill League. As the entire team will be back next year, we are looking forward to another cham- pionship team.
