Although World Peace is greatly impeded and delayed, the United Nations is struggling, with faith and hope in mankind unshaken, that eventually, good will among all countries will prevail. As a step toward the achievement of this goal, a American generosity is unsurpassed. We are pouring our wealth into destitute nations to guarantee their survival-physically, econ- omically, and politically. At the same time we are offering within our shores, refuge to thousands of European displaced persons whose plight is desperate. Can cold war or the iron curtain of Russia long endure against the hope of the world? But we also must look homeward. Internationally mag- nanimcus, America must solve, for her own people, tremendous problems in order to secure a better way of life. .If we would safeguard our Democracy, we must suppress the insidious spread of Communism. The equalization of educational oppor- tunity, the cooperation of capital and labor, the prevention of crime, the eradication of disease, and the security of the aged are some of the responsibilities which our students, as good citizens, must assume in the near future, if we would be sure that Victory Is Ours Forever. Beck ' ' ' ' ' ' ' and Mr. David G. Evans I As we, the class of 1949, bid farewell to our Alma Mater, let us take briefly a retrospective view of the four short years we were privileged to- attend St. Clair High School. On August fourteenth, 1945, just before we began our career as Fresh- men, we were thrilled with the news that the hostilities of World War II had ceased. An atmosphere of tranquillity and joy prevailed as we anxiously awaited the development of the reconstruction program, with United Nations pointing the way to World Peace. As Sophomores we welcomed a large group of township students. We participated in all school sports and clubs and other extra-curricular activi- ties, as we made adjustment to the 6-6 reorganization plan of the junior- Senior High School. The traditional Prom, with its dazzling and scintillating whiteness of ice and snow, was the glamorous event of our junior year. The Senior Hop, a maze of blue and gold, was also a most enjoyable af- fair. May we express our deepest gratitude to those who have made our education possible, and as we continue to accomplish the tasks that lie before us, the joy of achievement will serve to remind us of our slogan, Victory Is Ours Forever, and will urge us to strive ever onward an upward. ll ,yu . l ff , AE X n , ,Q . 1 r T. The memorable junior Prom on Christmas night proved to be the out- standing social event, of the scholastic year. The auditorium was decorated with snow and evergreen over which lights cast a cheerful glow. The music was furnished by Ken Alexander and his Orchestra. Much of the credit for the success of the Prom is due to our advisors, Miss Mary Monahan and Mr. Francis Mooney, and the Committees. Because of the important part music has played in our school life, we are indebted to Mrs. Gibson for her untiring efforts in training the Glee Clubs. During the past years. it has displayed its talent in activities such as the Christmas program and the May Minstrel. Both were hits, thanks to our directors. The class of 1949 wishes to express sincere thanks to all who participated in the Glee Club. We also hope that it continues to be as successtul in future years. 50 gancf The Saints Band for 1G48-40 was perhaps the best ever developed. Under the unsurpassed directorship of Mr. Thomas Jennings, the group became a versatile musical organization. Our band made its appearance at football games and made the gym ring with good cheer at the basketball games with their playing and colorful for- mations during the half. There was also an array of color furnished by the major and majorettes with the help of the cheerleaders and twirlers who set off the band to the greatest advantage especially during various parades in which they participated. We also had the honor to be represented in the Eastern District Band in April 1949, by Edward Foster. This meeting was held in Mahanoy City. The Class of 1949, especially the members of the band, sincerely hope that this organization will continue its good work in the future. 51 Uwhuha Our orchestra, although not as active as the band, did participate in quite a few social affairs both for the Saint Clair High Graduation and Class Night Exercises as well as for the New Castle Township. Most of the members of the orchestra also belonged to the band and were kept busy between the two organizations. St. Clair was also represented at the Penna. Music Edu- cators Association of the Eastern District Orchestra at Boyertown in De- cember 1948, by Skip Arnout. 52 vqlpfza fbella Z President , , Samuel Arnout 'I'roasurer lilvanm' Luzzn' Vive President , litlvvarcl Orlowsky Publicity Manager XN'ultc1' Yum-k Secretary . Play-off 62 8 Saint Clair High School won the championship of the North Schuyl- kill League for the second consecutive year. .This also marked the tenth time in fourteen years the Saints have won the coveted banner. The problem of a home Held was settled when the Amvets granted the use of their recently developed diamond to the team. The clarion salutes this fine organization for their splendid support of the club. This gesture of co-operation is a living proof of the part athletics play in the development of good citizens. It shows the workability of a Democracy that is the envy of the world. E The team made an excellent record. Their feat in winning the title with but one loss is rare in North Schuylkill ranks. Their high standard of sportsmanship made many friends all through the county. Gracious in victory courteous in defeat, their actions made the name St. Clair s-ynony- mous with sportsmanship. Again fine team play and never say die spirit characterized their play. Individual performances, though excellent, were overshadowed by team work-the play that produces champions. Jim-my Kellagher and Bob Corby led a good pitching staff. Paul Leone, Earl Bensinger, and john Powell gained valuable experience in mound work for coming seasons. Ken Kostrey and Bob Dellock handled the catching chores well. Al Bodenhorn, Al Rennick, Joe Hnatishion, Sam Arnout, joe Capko, johnny Skrincosky and Red Doyle were capable infielders. Bernie Bramley, Tom Cummings, Wendy Skrobak, Eddie Davis, roamed the out- field. Though graduation losses will be severe the Saints look forward to another good club. If the spirit that pervaded the past clubs is carried on, the team will again be found with the leaders. The Clairian salutes a great group of boys and wishes their successors luck in the future. 63 A,-f ' f . X A ,A f ,1 .Q ki ,M ww-- v J 4 4 x I J 1 A , x., A ,4 r -yu. . .V , fi N 'P X 1' J L -. They were confronted with a twenty- four game schedule. In exhibition encounters three games were lost by two point margins. In league encounters both West Mahanoy Twp. and Frackville edged the 'Liaints in extra period thrillers by margins of two points, and in a much disputed game at Gilberton the Saints were subdued by a one point margin. However, in return engagements with West Mah- anoy Twp. and Mt. Carmel Twp. the Saints prevailed by one and two points respectively. After repeated early season losses, St. Clair made its bid in the second half league race: practices were stepped up, teamwork, cooperation and spirit moulded together a fine team. The will to win prevailed among the players and became more prevalent as the season progressed. The few losses through graduation enlightens the future for St. Clair High. The superb performance of Co-captain Al Renneck in addition to Bill Romans are the only regular losses. However. joe Garrity and Walt Yanek compute the four senior members of the 1948-49 team. Returning boys are Co-captain Stretch Platchko, Bernie Gombar, Joe Capko, Jim Kelly, Tony Tunlosky, Bernal Gawley, George Yanek, and Alfred Bouen- horn. With a veteran array returning plus a few boys from one of the most outstanding junior Varsity teams in the history of the school the outlook for the 1949-S0 basketball season is certainly bright and encouraging.
