we' 1948 Cfairian Editor-in-Chief Joe Corby Business Manager Dorothy Motto Ol QLU0l ln this volume of the Clairian we have tried to picture the Senior Class of l948. We have recorded the successes and the failures, the events, activities and personalities which made up our High School days. May it remind us that cooperation and unsel- fishness are needed for success in town, state or world affairs just as they were in classroom or school activity. As we take our place in an age that is fighting for Peace through United Nation Conferences we can put real meaning into our motto: Today We Follow: Tomorrow We Lead. ibeokcafion 'IflL, :Le cfuu of 1948, zleabcafe ffm wfume of the Cfaifian fo the umle,JaMmm. Elizabeth Kelly Sponsors Miss Mary Mccarrity Treasurer .... Michael Papinchak and Mr. Charles Miller Four short years ago we entered Saint Clair High School as Freshmen. We were active in all school sports and clubs. By our Junior year we had placed key men on every varsity squad and had gained enviable reputa- tions in C-lee Club and Dramatics. During these years the school was reorganized on the 6-6 plan and we 'had to make many adjustments as we became part of the Junior-Senior High School, About to leave S.C.H.S. we realize that cooperation and hard work is the basis of all success. We can only lead to the extent that we inspire loyalty in our followers. ll Melvine Andriyausky uspeedyn Earnest worker . . . ex- cellent student . . . cre- ative artist . . . made silhouettes for Prom . . . designs clothes . . . com- plains about her hair . . . undecided about Cupid's arrow . . . whiz at short- hand and typing . . . popular . . . dependable. Evans lt was with great pride and considerable joy that we took our place as Juniors this year. We have passed the third milestone in our High School work and we are anxiously looking forward to the final lap of our journey. On December 26, the Junior Prom, the most brilliant affair of the year, was held in the Carroll Street Auditorium. Trees of spruce and pine, laden with snow and blue lights, glistened beneath a huge pinwheel of white streamers, radiating from an immense blue globe. Ken Alexander and his Orchestra furnished the music. After three years of scholastic, social and athletic success we, the class of l949, will begin our Senior year with determination and a renewed conviction that Victory is ours forever! 24 SECTION IIA FRONT ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Eleanor Moore, Nicholas Kovich, Wilbur Mansell, Harry Blakeslee, Steve Futchko, Betty Frantz, Betty Ann Fahl, Mardell Kahler, George Watunya, Andrew Potts, Edward Setlock, Nicholas Kulka. The Fall of l947 witnessed the entrance of a Freshman Class into Saint Clair High School that, we think, will surpass all its predecessors. Talented academically, physically and socially we feel that our road through school will be a highway of success. Already our light has shone forth. On the athletic front we have placed players in varsity competition in our first year. We have inaugurated a system of class dues that assures the success of our social undertakings. Our learning amazes all and our quick aptitude surprizes even our severest critics. Our motto expresses our attitude, our confidence and our goal as the future leaders of community and country. 28 SECTION 9A FRONT ROW, LEFT TO RIC-HT: Steven Denotsko, Joseph Parker, Michael Hudak, Frances Klein, Pa- tricia Krill, Vera Kuharsky, Theresa Sleva, Theresa Lutzkanin, Dolores Feryo, Charles Schroding, Edward Donaldson, Francis Petrozino, Rich- ard Lynch, SECOND ROW: Irene Curis, Lois Cray, Anna Beecher, Rosalie Ann Potts, Sylvia Kovich, John Burbank, Vincent Sabadas. Due to the lack of a suitable playing and practicing field and injuries to the members of the starting array the Saints didn't win a game all season. St. Clair scored only two touchdowns the entire season. The Saints put on their best exhibition against Shenandoah when they battled the highly favored shens on even terms only to come out on the short end of the score. Here's hoping the team of 48 may have more success and a home field to play and practice on. 43 KNEELINC: Managers-Charles Weber, William Connors, James Klemer. The team won the championship of the North Schuylkill League, making nine times the Saints have capped the pennant in thirteen years of competition. A drab outlook faced the Saints when the season opened. With no home field, no practice and really atrocious weather the prospects for success seemed dim. However, Mr. Harold Smythe and The Saint Clair Coal Company came to the rescue and made Parvin's Hill into a baseball diamond. Because of the cold and rain work was delayed and the Saints went into their first game without practice, losing to Frackville 6-3. Then a remarkable winning streak of IO games swept them into lst place where they stayed. Due to the 5 year suspension, the team could not advance in the play-offs and Shenan- doah, the team finishing second, went on to win the District ll title. The club hit hard, fielded well and ran bases daringly. Steals-single, double and delayed-drove opposing teams frantic. A smooth infield of J. Bramley, A. Rennick, Kachek and Honickerg a fleet outfield of Buletza, Love and R. Corby gave excellent support to the fine hurling of Kellagher and Futchko. Kostrey, Kubeika and B. Bramley divided the catching chores. Chaplick, Bodenhorn, Androshick, Doyle, Barrett, Pollog were valuable re- placements in the drive for the flag. Possibly the greatest contributing factor for the season's success was the fine winning spirit of the boys. Walking over a mile to practice no one missed a single session. At Ashland, behind 3-O in the last inning, a 4-run rally won the game emphasizing the never say die spirit of the squad. When injuries held out all the catchers Buletza came in from the outfield and caught the important Shenandoah game giving a fine exhibition. That spirit plus excellent cos-operation and teamwork brought the Saints to the top of the North Schuylkill League. 45 VARSITY TEAM FIRST ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Steve Futchko-manager, Norman Kaunas, Tommy Honicker, Albert Rennick, James Kellagher, Michael Mihalsky, James Dormer--manager. The team which was again favored to capture the North Schuylkill League title had its ups and downs. The Saints started out by losing their first five games. They hit their true stride in the following game and started on a sensational seven game winning streak only to be halted by Butler Twp., first half champions. The team was again favored to be in the fight for the second half, but they lost the first two league games. Underclassmen finished the season. SCHEDULE Dec Clair ........... 26 Port Carbon . . . Remembered well will your teachings be As tomorrow's world we will try to lead. Now Saint Clair High, we must say C-ood-by But we'll always be grateful to you. Let's bow our heads to the red and blue To its standards proud we will e'er be true. And in our minds you will always find The hopes enshrined in nineteen forty-eight. ln future years we will banish fears As we strive for fame in your glorious name.
