He knows how to get the students to care about what they learn. - Allan Wright He always wants to help, and he's really committed to his work. - Kinloch Nelson i Vg. up-9-...ir as The students of Saint Christopherls School dedicate the sixty-third edition of the The Raps and Taps to Mr. George Ocran Squires. For thirty-five years Mr. Squires has educated, inspi- red, and amused the students at St. Christophefs, Over the years Mr. Squires has developed a reputation as someone who cares. His patience with students and willingness to give of himself has en- abled scores of students to reach their full potential. However, his con- tributions to the school go far beyond the classroom. g Mr. Squires, encyclopedia: reser- voir of knowledge has settled many dining hall debates His sense of humor and wit is legendary. No matter what day, season or weather condition, Mr. Squires can always be counted on to point out the brighter side of the situ- ation. For decades George Ocran Squires has been an integral part of the Saint Christopher family and we are better because of him. As a student, I had the privilege of being in Mr. Squires' Honors Rhetoric class in 1979. From those three months of instruction, I grew more self-conscious of my reason- ing and writing as he prompted us to question our competence and subsequent confidence. He taught us to appreciate the potential impact of carefully chosen nouns, verbs, objects, and modifiers. I'm sure he had planned to do, he brought a group of supposedly advanced writers back down to earth. I suppose that's why some of his students in the past two years have alluded to him as a god in whose hands they hang suspended. When I returned to St. Chris- topher's two years ago, Mr. Squires would remind me that students should not linger in the hallway. Although I think he was joking, I was acutely aware of my limited knowledge compared to his erudi- tion. I know that I can still turn to him to learn what I should have known, thus he implicitly reminds me of the reading and study that I have yet to confront. In retrospect, I suppose that I, too, should have asked eight years ago, Is education wasted on the young? No, I realize that education is not wasted on the young, indeed, Mr. Squires has helped me and hundreds of others appreciate the substance not only of his teaching but of our never-ceasing education. - Bob Harris w- t H When I was here, the English Department was the best depart- ment in the school, and he was the best teacher. - Rob Pasco In the twenty-six years I've worked with him, I've viewed him as the English Professorf' and I have always been greeted with a smile, and I count him as a valued friend. - A.J. This year has been time of excitement for all of the representatives as we accepted the attitude of being catalysts to make great headway. It was also a period oflearning as we gained patience in the role of lead- ership, striving for change yet learning to respect the opinions of those adminis- trators in authority above us. The Council confronted many challenges including the recurring park- ing lot dilemma with unparalleled over- crowding. The chaotic situation was alleviated and made much better by requiring St. Catherine's students to park behind the chapel. On another issue, the Council worked with the cafeteria manager, at the request of students, to write new menus, allowing more variety and larger sized meals. Another challenge included lobbying for more senior privilegesg specifically, attempting to gain the opportunity to eat out on occasion for lunch. These are just a few of the goals this year's Council realized and pursued during a highly successful term. It has been my privilege to work with these representatives for the student body. The Student Council has been ac- tive and determined to battle for im- provements for the students and to im- prove communications between the lat- ter and administration. A special thanks is given to Mr. Bol- ling and Mr. Pasco, our advisors who devoted time and good advice to the ses- sion of '87-'88. Without our valuable advisors, the Student Council would not have been nearly the success it was. - Will Herring Advisor Bolling, President Will Herring, Vice-President Lee Fiedler, Advisor Pasco, Secretary Greg Easley Seated: Cole Durrill, Freitag, john Reid, Ward Marsiiller, Greg Easley, Will Herring, Lee Fiedler, Leo Boyd, Billy Kerkam, jesse Williianis, 0 GO Keith Allen Standing: Parker Davis, Rice Hall, Patrick Scliubmehl, Advisor Pasco Absent: john Matthews, Advisor Bolling ox swag DH! .pi i sg-2 sf, , of 'vox Organizations - l25 - - - 59 pw Missionary Society 0. 5 ! r QB! wx N59 as . cf 3 EA Oo 'Q A 'Q-nd-D' First Row: Rohhie Wzxre, Rand Dupriest, Eddie Luinplcin, Donny Wzitie, Carter Hiihard, Billy Wziecldf ter Second Row: Sum Ware, john Reid, Clint Goldberg, Stephen Stalker, Chaplain Martin, Allen R ,R' HzllAlv':Bilr'R' , w . . ew me I Sim W Ll QW President Goldberg, Chaplain Martin Battle of the Brain Advisor Kennedy, Captain Nelson, Advisor Camp Front Row: Francis Park, Teddy Smith, Kinloch Nelson, Doug Lamh, Bland Whitley Second Row: Rohhie Wz1re, Bill White, Advisor Kennedy, Matt David' son, Advisor Camp I26 - Organizations iw. ,y . , 9 tk' fs' if V' - .f el I ' x is st. t ,J-W 5 ,V i .L - Q 4' 'qkm ' . I wake up tby the way, pretty Iatel and I look around to see new fumiture. doors, bigger windows, and the radio sounding a different language. That was not part of my dream anymoreg it was indeed my new life. It's hard to explain exactly what living with a new family, studying a lol, and, of course, going out with new friends mean to me. Moreover, there exist unnumerable differences in the climate. the food. and the people. oh! I cannot even believe the cars I see every moming on the way to school. Besides the knowledge l acquire every single day, my AFS year is teaching me how to face the moments of pleasure and frustration. Because of them, I am able to identify new values, feelings, thoughts and limits I had not realized before now. Being an AFS student. I have a long joumey ahead of me. Along the Wlly, there are colorful 7 rum Eflzrurn trees, wonderful waterfalls, birds whistling songs of fratemity. I stop walking. I take many and many pictures, Suddenly, tough rocks appear over the way, My feet seem to surrender before the hard soil. However, those pictures l've been taking help keep me going and looking forward. Ican say that the rocks are the inevitable obstacles I've got to fight against. The pictures showing me my way are my fnends. my new family, and those who will be sad in July, l988 when I will say good- bye. After all. I could look up in my Webster's Pocket Dictionary a proper word to describe this exciting and challenging period of my life. But, I would rather say it by myself, It's been raging dude, I mean, awesome! - Lauro Organizations - l27 7 Y? f ,',, , ii vs . . The quality of the St. Christopher's Glee Club reflects the time and devotion of its director, members, and accompanists. Our school is truly fortunate to have such an extensive music program. Through Glee Club, you can pursue interests in music, meet new friends, and even travel on concert tours. This year has proven a challenge for Director Hope Armstrong Erb and all in- volved. Not only did we have the largest and most diverse group in the history of the Glee Club but we also faced some very challenging music. However, judging from our concerts, I think we can honestly state that we met the challenge and overcame its complexity. The senior members of the Glee Club have exhibited a great deal of leadership. Clearly the program will not be the same next year without Leo Boyd, Zack Erb, Stuart Gunter, Popie Reed, and Edward Williams. I think I can honestly speak for the I K rest of the seniors in stating that the I,,,,,,L,A ' F -' ' ' ' FV -r'l 'n Glee Club has given much to us over 5 :TT ' the years.
