Tunes rock at STC STC students found themselves rocking to the beat of the Pep Band. Led by Mr. Jeff Childs, the band filled the gym with music during basketball games and pep assemblies. Afterthe roar of the crowd quieted when sporting events were over, serious-minded musicians joined Jazz Band I, better known as The Jazz Workshop. The workshop entertained students during lunch hours with their award-winning music. Behind Jazz Band l was Jazz Band ll, who practiced weekly in this, their first year of existence at STC. ln the climax of their performances, Jazz Band ll warmed up the audience forthe Jazz Workshop with Songs like Clean It Up, and l've Been Searchin' So Long . The highlight of the concert was a dual solo by drummer, Todd Moffett, and saxophonist, Steve Darflinger, during the song Fox Fire. Vocalists for the Workshop were Mary Angerer and Dave Hunt, while Jill Childs and .Jane Wray sang for Jazz Band ll. Both of the Jazz Bands were under the direction of Jeff Childs. 'lPut that Panasonic tape recorder out of its misery!!! was the complaint of several Drill Team watchers about the use of taped music at games. But, despite muffled lyrics and missed beginnings, the 24 girls did their best to entertain fans at home games and pep assemblies. The drill team members kept the spirit at STC running high even through worrying over last minute practices and Hwho gets to face the players at the assembly? arguments. The Drill Team found extra time to help Key Club with its annual Christmas party for the students at the Mades-Johnston Centerfor the mentally handicapped. The girls also sold M8tMs to students to help buy new props and more uniforms. Summer camps proved both fun and profitable for the girls as two first place awards, four second places, and a special ribbon for spirit and enthusiasm were won. This spirit carried right on through the year to enable the girls to win the fourth place trophy at the Downers Grove North invitational competition. Drill Team was led this year by Brenda Clark, captain, and co-captain Carrie Cromwell. Ms. Diana Sandberg, adviser, also gave the necessary guidance and even proved she could still Udo ity' by joining the squad in the pep assembly performance of Sweet Georgia Brown, the GIobetrotter's theme for which they used basketballs. 209
