Nlarching Saints suffer wet year We now direct your attention to the north end ofthe field as we present the 77-78 edition of the St. Charles High School Marching Band, under the direction of Jeff Childs? Muddy practices, rained-on games and lack of a band room could not dull the spirit of the Marching Saints. Despite half-time downpours, the faithful band members attended all the games and occasionally outnumbered the fans. However, things turned around when the Saints revived the tradition of the marching band concert. Lots of band boosters crowded into Dunham gym for the concert November 15. The Flags fChilds' Chicksl, Twirlers and Drill Team joined the Marching Saints and the newly formed Freshman Marching Band. During the marching season, the band traveled to Northwestern University to attend Band Day, September 24. Bands from all over the state attend each year to see a special NU Wildcat Marching Band show and a Big 10 football game. Although the game proved disappointing to Wildcat fans, the trip is usually one of the high points of the year. ' . ,,.,,, ,gflyi Y - T 'li K' W! tip S45

'lPut that Panasonic tape recorder out of its misery!!! was the complaint of several Drill Team watchers about the use of taped music at games. But, despite muffled lyrics and missed beginnings, the 24 girls did their best to entertain fans at home games and pep assemblies. The drill team members kept the spirit at STC running high even through worrying over last minute practices and Hwho gets to face the players at the assembly? arguments. The Drill Team found extra time to help Key Club with its annual Christmas party for the students at the Mades-Johnston Centerfor the mentally handicapped. The girls also sold M8tMs to students to help buy new props and more uniforms. Summer camps proved both fun and profitable for the girls as two first place awards, four second places, and a special ribbon for spirit and enthusiasm were won. This spirit carried right on through the year to enable the girls to win the fourth place trophy at the Downers Grove North invitational competition. Drill Team was led this year by Brenda Clark, captain, and co-captain Carrie Cromwell. Ms. Diana Sandberg, adviser, also gave the necessary guidance and even proved she could still Udo ity' by joining the squad in the pep assembly performance of Sweet Georgia Brown, the GIobetrotter's theme for which they used basketballs. 209
